==Introduction==

Formerly from the John John series, I had not tried this beer in years. I almost forgotten what this was about. Back then the beer was definitely lighter at 6.4% ABV. Now with a new name it fits very well. The combination of Dead Guy ale aged in a Whiskey created by distilling the dead guy ale, now thats what you call evolution! Granted I can’t remember how the original version of this beer was but I am definitely happy to bring it back to the site and give it a go. Let’s have a look, cheers!

Aromas:

Oak, whiskey, caramel, rye bread, piloncillo sugar cone, sweet potato, honey, bourbon, toasted coconut hints, biscuit bread, banana hints, dark fruit, hazelnut nectar, pecan pie notes, citrus, piney and earthy hops.

Flavors:

Lots of toffee, vanilla, marshmallow, oak, dulce de leche caramel, pecan pie, crème brulee, whiskey, bourbon, biscuit bread, old mango, rye bread, alfajor (Mexican Coconut sugar candy, oranges, funky tart notes, grape hints, banana, clove spice, earthy hop notes, honey, burnt sugar, Belgian candy sugar notes, dark fruit raisins, figs, hazelnut nectar notes, fruit cake, piloncillo sugar cone, sweet potato, cinnamon, flan, tangerine hints, stone fruit peach and apricot notes.

Aftertaste:

Finishing rich in caramel, toffee, dark fruit, fruit cake, toasted coconut notes, earthy hop notes, oak, whiskey notes and burnt sugar dryness. No alcohol in the taste, amber clear body, smooth, creamy and dry mouth feel along with a moderate drinkability.

Overall:

While personally, I think it is above exceptional due to the whiskey barrel aging, it is not supreme. Hell I love dead guy and this process takes it to the next level at that. There is so much criticism over these beers in the community but I for one look for what I like and this one is definitely a huge winner. Granted I have have had better barrel aged beer, it isn’t often you see a barrel aged hellsbock. The only thing that might come close to its amazingness is the Samichlaus, but that’s definitely on another review on site. I would definitely recommend it highly but only if you like Rogue for sure.

Anime Corner:

Lei-Lei/Hsien-Ko from the Darkstalkers/Vampire Savior series and the Pacman Ghost were used in this pairing since I wanted to compare the Dead and Dead aspect of the series to 2 ghosts, that being the pacman ghost and Lei Lei. The funny thing about this beer, is that it is fermented with PacMan Yeast! Funny how the pairing works super well in this context and for Lei Lei as well.

Hazelnut Brown Nectar has been one of my top favorite brews since I first started trying different craft beers. Even to this day, If I see it on the taps or on the store, I definitely get it. When I first heard they were releasing a Chocolate version of the Hazelnut Brown by combining the 2 recipes of beer, this was something I did not want to miss out on. A candy bar in liquid form. There have been many nutty chocolate beers especially hazelnut chocolate beers that I have tried before. However, with this one, I will have to remember and compare to the original Hazelnut nectar to see if I love this one as much as the Hazelnut Brown Nectar or even more. Let’s take a look, cheers!

Overall:
While it is no Grey Monday, this beer is insane! It mainly gets the praise from me since I was such a fan of the original in the beginning that this takes it a bigger step above. I think while the beer is not super rich, it still has all the flavors of chocolate and hazelnut that will not overwhelm the average beer drinker. Personally, I would go with Grey Monday but that beer is night today in comparison. Even so, as a tribute to the original, I highly recommend people try this one and I hope to get this one again!

Anime Corner:
Asuka Langley Shikinami Soryu from Neon Genesis Evangelion was chosen to return for this brew as I chose her to be the one in the original Hazelnut Brown Nectar. The idea was that she represents a punch of flavors and hair hazelnut colored hair represented the colors of the beer but also the flavors. Since this one impacts a greater flavor profile, it would only make sense to make her comeback hitting much harder than before.

Another pink bottle release by Rogue brewing. Now I know many beer snobs and elitists have given this series a bad rap ever since the release of the original maple bacon doughnut beer. Even the consecutive releases have been criticized harshly. I do agree, I find them to be in the range of good to very good and while I don’t condone the criticism, I think some of these can be very good. I just happen to have a pretty open palate for these kinds of beers regardless if they use “natural flavorings” or not. The point is, there are some very delicious ones like the raspberry and also the banana peanut butter one. Those I loved a lot. The lemon one was nice too and the mango was okay. So with that in mind, let’s be open minded about this one and see how it is, criticism aside. Cheers!

Aromas:
Lots of grape preserves, jolly ranchers, biscuit bread, butterscotch, caramel, vanilla hints, dark fruit berries, Danish cream and mild hop notes.

Flavors:
Rich grape jolly ranchers, grape kool aid, grape soda, grape syrup, biscuit bread, caramel notes, vanilla, herbal, floral and earthy hops, licorice, cane sugar, almond milk, dark fruit prunes, mild Danish cream and hints of boysenberry cobbler.

Aftertaste:
Finishes with lot of jolly rancher grape candies, biscuit bread and caramel. No alcohol in the taste. Amber honey colored clear body, crisp, refreshing and smooth mouthfeel along with an easy drinkability.

Overall:
A pretty good brew but definitely on the artificial side of things. While I do not think it’s bad, their intention of getting as close to grape flavors as possible was a definite success. Although not so naturally. While I did try to find its complexity, I ended up short as the overall flavor is definitely grapes. This is worth a try at least especially if you are nostalgic of grape soda like the one they made in Mexico for me. Definitely nice!

Anime Corner:
Widow Maker from Overwatch was chosen for this review as I wanted to pair the colors of the grape ape with her purple colors. She is supposed to be a tough character in the game and by her name, it does seem like she can be deadly. This beer is not deadly and is actually sweet, like her appearance but the toughness is definitely part of the Gorilla.

Sea stars on the west coast are rapidly dying from a mysterious disease called sea star wasting syndrome. It causes lesions, arm loss, and eventually can turn stars into goo. This is one of the largest marine animal disease events in recording history. Purchasing this beer will help to fund the research of this disease through the partnership for interdisciplinary studies of coastal oceans at Oregon State University.

Rogue Wasted Sea Star Purple Pale Ale is made with purple corn, giving it a slight purple color. Sweet up front with a smooth hop finish.

I obtained this one at the Rogue online store buy.rogue.com along with the Mango Astronaut. I was intrigued by the ingredients and the color of the beer but also the fact that purchasing this was going to a good cause. Save Marine wild life and enjoy some beer, you can’t beat that! With that being said, a beer made from purple corn is intriguing to me. Yeah, corn is just an adjunct added to many lagers but organic purple corn, well, this may seem like something different, or atleast I would like to think. So let’s see what this beer is about.

Aromas:
Caramel, pilsner malt, cereal grains, honey hints grapes, rye bread, dark fruit notes, piloncillo sugar cone, citrus, grapefruit, floral, herbal and grassy hops hints and berry notes.

Flavors:
Honey, grapes, cereal grain, corn adjunct, caramel, grape marmalade, rye bread, butterscotch, dark fruit raisins, plums, blackberries, taro ice cream, ube bread, sweet potato, piloncillo sugar cone, citrus, grapefruit, floral, herbal and grassy hops, brown sugar, cinnamon, and blackberry cobbler.

Aftertaste:
Finishing dry with a bit of malty, grainy and dark fruit sweetness. No alcohol in the taste, mainly amber colored with a purple tinge clear body, smooth, creamy and refreshing mouthfeel and is very easy to drink.

Overall:
A pretty good ale with a good amount of crisp and refreshing flavors. It does have some complexity to it and body but at the same time it has some flavors you would find in a nice lager. It does not seem to fall in the category of hoppy pale ale but more of malty yet crisp ale. It was decent and worth the try for sure if you can find it but nothing too extravagant. Sure it did have some notes that I really like, like the purple ube.

Anime Corner:
Rider from Fatestay Night was used in this pairing as I wanted a good representative for the overall purple theme of the beer. Sea Stars are near color blind and some believe have no sight at all. Regardless of what may be true, using Rider with the eye cover helps show case this. Her being purple and in the water also adds to the complement of the beer artwork and theme.

==Introduction==

Inspired by the Mango Tango doughnut, this brew is essentially a mango orange beer. This is interesting as some of the Voodoo series have been a hit or miss. My favorite ones to date are the Raspberry Chocolate, peanut butter banana and the lemon Crueller one. Now with this one being an orange and mango beer, I am intrigued to see how this turns out. Lets take a look and see where this one goes Cheers!

Aromas:
Crisp grain, Mango, Stone fruit peaches, apricot, lychee, tropical fruits like kiwi, passion fruit, guava, dragon fruit, prickly pear, lemon peel, toffee, coriander spice, banana notes, orange and mango tang, cane sugar and honey notes.

Flavors:
Lots of Stone fruit, Mango, apricot, lychee, peaches, Tropical fruit guava, papaya, kiwi, dragon fruit, passion fruit, prickly pear, honey dew melon, pineapple, biscuit bread, strawberries, cherries, Tangerines, mango candies, lemon peel, toffee, coriander spice, banana notes, brown sugar and honey notes.

Aftertaste:
Finishes semi dry with lingering stone fruits and mango sweetness. No alcohol in the taste, easy to drink, golden to honey clear body and a crisp, refreshing and rich mouthfeel.

Overall:
A very good beer but not very complex. The mango they were going for is definitely there but it is like a candied mango. Also, the beer is more on the sweeter side hence the variety of take away fruitiness. Although, the focus seems very mango heavy rather than leading way to other characters the beer may have and only notes them as the temperature changes. I still think it is worth a try but some of their other beers a better than this one for sure.

Anime Corner:
Ciel from Megaman Zero was used in this pairing as I wanted to pair mainly with the colors but also with the astronaut. Since Ciel is the color of mangoes and pairs well with the beer, I figured she would work the best. Wearing Zero’s suit, she can definitely withstand the harsh environment of space like Zero can in some of the space missions he has to take on near the end of some of the games. She would be the Mango Astronaut.

A Braggot is a style of fermented drink brewed in the 12th century. Blending spices, herbs, mead (honey wine) and beer. This is the first time I try a Braggot and frankly I don’t know what to expect. It is much closer to a mead and a beer so I will take it as I can. I have never had marionberry either but they do look a lot like dark raspberries or a blackberry. I can only apply so much of my beer expertise to this one and since it is a hybrid of a mead and beer, I can only do as best I can. Lets dig into this one shall we? Cheers!

Aromas:
Marrionberries?, Dark fruits like raisins, plums, cherries, raspberries, blackberries, earthy notes, rye bread, vanilla, caramel, honey, ginger spice, herbal notes, flowers, lavender, pomegranates, brown sugar and pecan pie, and milk chocolate.

Flavors:
Rich dark fruits like raisins, figs, marionberries?, dark cherry, raspberries, blackberries, currants, pomegranate, spices, rye bread, earthy notes, green tea, honey, herbs, toffee, biscuit bread, vanilla caramel, slight hint of flan, ginger spice, cinnamon hints, flowers, lavender, wild flower nectar, pecan pie and almond joy chocolate.

Aftertaste:
Leaving with some herbal yet sweet honey and rich berry sweetness behind with caramel, vanilla and earthy notes. No alcohol in the taste regardless of the ABV, dark brown body, easy to moderate drinkability despite the ABV and creamy, smooth and mildly syrupy mouthfeel.

Overall:
Since I can’t judge a Braggot since since this type of drink is so rare, I can only say for being my first kind I really like it and I think it is perfect. The rich flavors are sweet but there are is a sense of herbs and some hidden spices that balances everything out so it is not like an ale in that sense. This reminds me of Dogfish Head Forte in a way. Also, the alcohol is not even present which is concerning since it is easy to drink. Not that I would have a problem with it but trying to drink the whole thing would be like a night capper. For being the first Braggot I try, I definitely recommend it if you like fruit like ales or meads. I would gladly get this again.

Anime Corner:
Asuka Langley Shikinami/Sohryu and Mari Illustrious from Evangelion were used in this pairing to pair with the colors of the bottle, the color of the ingredients of the beer such as the variety of berries and the honey ofcourse. With the mix of Mari’s Brown hair (Body color), pink plug suit(Marionberries) and Asuka’s caramel colored hair(caramel and honey), Red plugsuit (Cherries and other dark fruits), Green plugs, (hops) and the birds (like the beers around the honey) this was the greatest pairing I could find for this beer. I really enjoyed the colors overall and the 12% ABV is mainly due to the fact that these 2 ladies are very very deadly and complete badasses. They are smooth as they are sexy but once they get you, your are done for!

The next installment of variants for Rogues Voodoo Doughnut beers. This time made in the form of a lemon chiffon crueller. I have no idea what a chiffon is but a quick google search talks about a pastry like a lemon cake. So I would assume this is supposed to be like a lemon merengue pie or lemon cake in a bottle. Of the other 3 variants, so far I really like the Chocolate raspberry pretzel and the Peanut buter banana ones. Lets see how this one plays out. Cheers!

Aromas:
Lemon cake, lemon merengue pie, marshmallow cream, vanilla, caramel, biwscuit bread, butterscotch, oranges, citrus, waffle cone, whipped cream, flan hints, doughnuts, banana notes, cookie dough, mint, lemon ice cream, orange creamcicle, piney hop notes and brown sugar.

Flavors:
Lemon candy, lemon drops, marshmallows, caramel, vanilla, lemon grass, biscuit bread, lemon merengue pie, orange preserves, orange peel, lemon and banana pound cake, pecan pie hints, piney hops, flan hints, marshmallow cream, whipped cream, banana hints, doughnut sugar, cookie dough, white grapes, peach, pears, mint, lemon peel and tangerines.

Aftertaste:
Sweet and tart lemon candy, marshmallow, vanilla, citrus and piney hops. No alcohol in the taste, clear gold body, creamy, crisp and refreshing mouthfeel and easy to drink.

Overall:
Very good ale to me but maybe off putting for some beer experts. They really nailed the whole lemon drop candy jelly doughnut aspect but maybe some of the sweetness may not be good for some and the lemon tartness may or may not be much. All in all I think this is worth the try and I personally like lemon and lemon candies but generally speaking, I like the raspberry pretzel chocolate and peanut butter banana ones better. Give it a try if you are willing.

Anime Corner:
Ashikaga Yoshiteru from Sengoku Hime was used in this pairing since I wanted to pair her with the colors of the beer mainly but also to show a small aspect of voodoo in relation to magic which can be seen by the mask she has. In Japanese lore, the flame next to the mask can be seen as one of the single flames from the pair of Will O’ Wisp which are known to follow the Yūrei which are like the equivalent of ghosts or spirits in Japan. In relation to the word Voodoo, that is almost in relation to the dead or bringing the dead back to life. It sort of fits although, Voodoo Doughnuts are merely magical since they are delicious.

==Introduction==

Yes, another weird beer. AS if the last beer (99 Scorpions) wasn’t already taking it to the upper most limits of just plain damn weird. This beer will be seeing distribution soon but I could not wait and got this from Rogue’s main site. Just like the time I tried the Beard yeast beer or the Chocolate Raspberry Pretzel. Although beard yeast beer was delicious for as weird as it was and so was 99 Scorpions. People love Sriracha and I think bringing the review out just in the nick of time to the masses so they can see if this is good or not was just the right occasion. So get your best Chinese plate out or any food you love this Sriracha on and see if the beer works better with or without food.

Aromas:
Sriracha, garlic, clove spice, dark chocolate, coffee, herbs, soy sauce, tomato sauce, szechuan peppercorns, biscuit bread, clove spice, red tree dried chilies, red bean paste and brown sugar.

Flavors:
Sriracha chili, dark chocolate, roasted coffee notes, herbs, spices, red tree dried chilies, red bean paste, garlic, clove spice, rye bread, tomato sauce, biscuit bread, caramel, vanilla, brown sugar, soy sauce, dark fruit hints, szechuan peppercorns, guajillo peppers, tobacco, roasted peanuts and toffee.

Aftertaste:
Rye, Sriracha sauce, earthy notes, vanilla, coffee, and dark chocolate hints. No alcohol in the taste, creamy mouth feel, sipping drinkiability due to the delicious yet overwhelming flavors and a dark crimson full body.

Overall:
As a Stout, this is very good. With the Sriracha, it is an interesting experiment but nothing too mind blowing. I gave it props on the stout flavors and the fact that this really tastes like a Sriracha bottle. While I love Sriracha, this beer is better drank as a food pairing. The heat is not as intense as other chili beers but after a while, the Sriracha heat will get to you and linger in the back of the throat. The balance of the beer is very good as the stout flavors tries its best to compliment the spiciness of the Sriracha. I think this is worth a try but if you have had Sriracha with food and drank and rich delicious stout, then you pretty much have had this beer. Whether gimmick or not, it really seems more of a novelty item than anything. I would only recommend this if you like Sriracha and Stouts.

Anime Corner:
Inubashiri Momiji from Touhou Series was used in this pairing to pair with the Sriracha beer in many aspects. When I think of heat, I think of fire and dragons. Inubashiri here looks like she has the sauce splattered all over. The heat is represented by her rage. I am not sure what she is possibly killing here but you can assume it is like the heat she spends trying to take down the your tastebuds. Her outfit and the Chinese symbols represents the origin of the great Hot Sauces of China and all their awesome glory. There are so many awesome sauces that some ferment for years and are very expensive. I am sure the basic Sriracha from China is way better than what we typically get everywhere here, but I digress. AS the dragons in the background drip from their mouths looks like blood is like Sriracha dripping as the sauce is HOT! Just like the beer after a while.

What can I say, I have never tried this beer but just the idea of trying a Rogue Anniversary beer, well, Rogue Creamery’s anniversary beer, I was like, fuck yeah. By the way, while Rogue Ales and Rogue creamery share the same name, they are indeed unique entities and to pay tribute to one another, this awesome beer was born in collaboration.

Aromas:
Toffee, dulce de leche caramel, German dopplebock aromas of sugary dark fruit raisins, figs, clove spice, molasses, cherries, maple, vanilla, hazelnuts, pecan pie, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, almond milk, biscuit bread, rye bread and brown sugar.

Flavors:
Milk chocolate, dark chocolate, dark fruits like raisins, figs, cherries, cinnamon, raisin bread pudding, molasses, lactose, hazelnut nectar, almond milk, pecan pie, flan, dulce de leche, crème brulee, maple, vanilla, rye bread, cinnamon, brown sugar and banana clove spice.

Aftertaste:
Pecans, chocolate, cinnamon, lactose, raisins, clove spice and earthy hop notes linger. No alcohol in the taste. Moderate drinkability with full body mouthfeel.

Overall:
Freaking perfect! I tried this with a piece of Munster cheese and it was damn good it really solidified the caramel aspects of the beer. You don’t need to try it with a cheese but just by itself it is very delicious. Taste more along the lines of a German Doppelbock or a winter warmer. It is very delicious regardless and I definitely think fits the Rogue creamery’s honor. Now, I should go online and buy some of their cheeses as they seem very delicious! Definitely give this one a try, I was rather intrigued by the sweet flavors this brown ale had to offer.

Anime Corner:
Original artwork by Kuromiya was chosen in this pairing to represent the delicous lactic flavors of the beer and to pair with the colors of the bottle and label. The character’s blue hair (maybe blue cheese) and flan pair with the colors. The flavors are obvious in this as it is a beer about a creamery and creameries sell puddings and sweet vanilla desserts. The pudding she is eating and her dress colors represent some of the prime flavors of the beer such as the vanilla, cherry, flan, chocolate, brown sugar, cinnamon and so forth. I can go on and say she the ribbon is like a cows horns and her breast combined with the pink dress represent the cow’s utt…oh… well sure why not 😉 . Whatever you say man. Anyways, I am sure there are other sweet things that can be said about this pairing. Oh yeah and the purple things, dark fruits!

Another awesome beer by Rogue, this time, made with chocolate, raspberries and pretzels. I was able to find this from Rogue’s website directly but they may actually be shipping across the nation just in time for the holidays. 

Aromas:
Lots of raspberry notes, caramel, milk chocolate, doughnut, maple, This one definitely hits a lot of Jelly doughnut fragrances, rye, sugary raisins, hazelnut hints, pretzel bread notes and pecan pie

Flavors:
Pretzel and lots of chocolate come more forward with the rich raspberries riding along through out the beer, roasted coffee, earthy hop presence, mocha, hazelnut, doughnut hints, caramel, raisins, raspberry jelly doughnut, maple, pecan pie, tootsie roll,vanilla, caramel, butterscotch, blueberry yogurt notes, and cherry hints. Gets more flavorful as it warms up.

Aftertaste:
Finishing the beer, you get lots coffee and roasty bitterness with the chocolate and raspberry notes still lingering as well as the buttery pretzel bread notes. No alcohol in the taste and easy to moderate drinkability.

Overall:
It is a great beer (At least to me)!! I would like to say I enjoyed this one way more than the original and possibly as much or a step up from Chocolate, Peanut Butter & Banana Ale Voodoo Doughnut. This one is way more like a liquid doughnut with roasted coffee. This is a breakfast in a bottle and what made it perfect in my opinion was the way the raspberries balanced themselves with the chocolate and doughnut flavors. This was a dessert just on its own. Also, the ABV is not overwhelming. If you did not enjoy the previous 2, this one may or may not make your day. Worth a try I say

The artwork used to pair this beer had to do with many different aspects. It mainly has to do with Voodoo dolls and desserts. The colors of each of these artworks can pair just about everything from the colors of the label, the beer bottle and even the flavors of the beer. Notice the doughnut in the artwork 😛?

The name sort of says it all. John Maier, our Brewmaster, wanted to create a beer that defied traditional style definitions. It was not quite a barley wine and not quite a double or imperial IPA. Who really cares about putting beers into narrow categories? Great beer – just drink it and enjoy.

This beer was supposed to be, well the beer that the infamous Beard Beer was supposed to be based out of (https://brewerianimelogs.wordpress.com/2013/04/11/beard-beer-by-rogue-brewing-company/). Looks like they did this one with Pacman yeast instead. Well, this should be interesting, a beer that can’t make up it’s mind. Reminds me of the Arrogant Bastard but that one is just labeled as American Strong Ale.

Aromas are of caramel, honey, citrus, ripe orange juice with pulp, earthy and grapefruit hops, pineapple, banana, a bit tropical, toffee, salt bread, almost crab cake or crab meat like? (might be kidding about the crab, might be not)

The flavors are of ripe to matured blood oranges and cream, caramel, grapefruit hops, earthy hops, bananas, saltine cracker notes, pine, pineapple, lots of coconut as it warms up, citrus, toffee, molasses, licorice, crab and crab cake notes (has to be the matured bitter orange flavors, I swear!!), apricots, matured mango, herbs, spices and lemon candy

The aftertaste is like a orange and caramel sweetness followed by bitter grapefruit and earthy to hops. This beer hides alcohol well, it is a sipper though. Not as full bodied and syrupy mouth feel. 

Overall the beer is very good but indeed confusing. You want to say it is IPA tropical but the Barleywine side tells you NO! I love it because it is sweet and bitter but the more I think about crabs the more I think it taste like crabs. I like crabs. I love seafood. I love this beer. I think it would pair exceptionally. This beer reminds me of Surly SYX but not as harsh. I did a review a while back, that one was too harsh. This is what SYX should have been. Then again, I may have been hard on it as it may have needed some aging to bring up the rating. Maybe next time 

Beard Beer by Rogue Brewing company

Beard Beer by Rogue Brewing company is a Belgian Blonde/Golden Ale with an ABV of ~5.6%. Not sure if this is the final name of the beer or if it was a prototype release. Originally released in April 1st, 2013 whom many believed was a joke. Joking aside, the plans were already in motion for this beer’s development since 2012 which was going to be called “Chatoe Rogue New Crustacean Barleywine”. While this may still be true, the beard yeast will most likely be used in that project.

Beard Beer is brewed with a yeast created from Brewmaster John Maier’s Beard. No Need to freak out, Brewers have used wild yeasts in beer making for centuries. John has had the same Old Growth Beard since 1983 and for over 15,000 brews, so it is no great surprise that a natural yeast ideal for brewing was discovered in his beard.

This is probably another one of those crazy open minded experiments for me. The last weird beet I tried was the Rocky Mountain Oyster stout which surprisingly was very awesome. Now there is really no beard hair in this beard but the yeast from John Maier’s beard was used to make this. Yeast is technically found almost anywhere and many of them have been known to be able to ferment sugars. So there is definitely nothing weird about this beer and science, or is there? Anyways, here’s to science! 

Upon opening this beer I got some very nice fragrant notes. Biscuit bread, citrus, guava, peppercorns, pineapple, banana, lychee fruit, pears and apples. The flavors are very good actually. Flavors are of biscuit bread, honey, slight caramel, peppercorns, apples, citrus, pineapple, bananas, slight mango, slight grassy bitterness, guava notes, spicy cloves, coriander and minor tart lemon peel. The aftertaste remains mainly bready and fruity with some nice spice and some bitterness. This is beer is basically a light Tripel or a saison. The beer is very drinkable, fruity, crisp and refreshing. This is the perfect beer for the coming summer and is perfect for the spring time. Don’t be afraid to try it, it really is is good.

I am a big fan of the Hazelnut Brown Nectar, so to find that they made a Rum aged version is simply awesome. The aroma of this version is of pecans, hazelnuts, walnuts, dark fruits like a wine grapes, rum, almost like a coca cola, molasses, brown sugar, slight sour grapes, prunes, biscuit bread and caramel, cinnamon, oak and other spices. The taste is of sour grapes, prunes, rum, coconut, some hazelnut, cranberries, vanilla caramel, biscuit bread, pecans, cinnamon, oak, earthy hops, lemon and spices. The aftertaste is a mix of sweet and some sour flavors. At first it was mostly sour but then the beer got better as I went along adding more spicy and sweeter hazelnut and berry notes. An interesting beer for sure, but I still liked the original much better. This version takes it into interesting places of flavor but just not where I thought it would. The beer is not bad, in fact its very good but not sure if it was because of the low ABV but sometimes with Barrel Aging beer, it takes beers into planes of higher complexity. This did it but only into the “light” type of complexity. Still, if you like Hazelnut Nectar, you may like this one.

John John Series Whiskey Barrel Aged Dead Guy Ale by Rogue Brewing

John John Series Whiskey Barrel Aged Dead Guy Ale by Rogue Brewing is a 6.4% Helles Bock. It is the original dead guy aged in Dead Guy Whiskey Barrels. Interesting as this is the lowest ABV Barrel Aged beer I have had. Most Barrel Aged beers usually are stronger in alcohol.

Rogue Dead guy ale is one of the most awesome beers out there. So far I have only tried the regular and the double dead guy ale. So finding this variant with Rogue dead guy whiskey brings a lot of in house quality when aging it in a barrel that they used similar ingredients from dead guy ale. Aromas of nice caramel covered pecans, whiskey, pecans and biscuit bread. The flavors of this version of Rogue Guy dead ale are of the original caramel, honey, biscuit bread, toffee, vanilla with added notes of the whiskey, oak, some coconut, banana, mango, pecans, alafajor (Mexican Coconut sugar candy), minor bittering earthy hops, minor citrus and some funky tart notes. For being only 6.5%ABV, there is a lot of flavor that you would normally get from a higher barrel aged beer. I haven’t tried the Rogue Dead Guy Whiskey but if its as close to this it would be definitely worth trying. Finally, a beer with some Barrel Aged oak and liquor flavors but without the excessive booziness.

Pumpkin Patch Ale by Rogue brewing

Never too late to try another pumpkin ale. This one is by Rogue. They make some of the best ales ..well pretty much ever lol. This ale is quite the nice beer. The fragrance of this beer is like caramel, actual pumpkin gourd and spices. The flavors of this beer are of true pumpkin flesh, cinnamon, caramel, rich pumpkin seeds, pumpkin pie, whipped cream, vanilla, capirotada (sweet mexican raisin bread), almonds, raisins, nuts, bread, nutmeg and cloves. If I had not known any better, I would say this would be the exact way a pumpkin would taste like if it was boiled in pilloncillo (Mexican sugar cone) and cinnamon like my mom used to make. Like the Smashed pumpkin beer except for the fact that it actually tasted like pumpkin flesh. Just simply amazing beer by Rogue 😀

Rogue makes some pretty awesome beers. This one should be no exception. The some smokey bakers chocolate aromas and sweet caramel on a mocha Frappucino. The flavors are of caramel, chocolate, coffee grounds, mocha, brown sugar, earthy hops,. Vanilla, raisin bread and whipped cream. There is this underlying chocolate cake flavor that reminds me of the Oak Aged Yeti. Good stuff here :P. So much rich flavor and a little bits of alcohol. Worth the try 🙂

Chocolate, Peanut Butter & Banana Ale Voodoo Doughnut by Rogue Brewing

Chocolate, Peanut Butter & Banana Ale Voodoo Doughnut by Rogue Brewing is a 5.3% Fruit Beer brewed with Chocolate, Peanut butter and Bananas. LOL Yeah this is different but awesome. A Homer Simpson type of beer I’m sure. This is the Variant of the original Voodoo Doughnut Bacon Maple Ale and recent release from Rogue.

Initial smell was very enticing. Strong smell from the chocolate, peanut butter and bananas. Hints of vanilla and caramel are in the aromas as well. There is also a smell of like cherry glaze. Almost like walking into the Doughnut shop type of pastry smell. The Initial taste is somewhat smokey and grassy but all that dissipates as soon as the rest of the flavors take over. Milk Chocolate, peanut butter, banana bread, vanilla, caramel, maple, campfire graham cracker and marshmallow notes, brown sugar, raisin, cherry, definitely like this butterscotch after taste. They definitely worked hard to make this beer taste like a doughnut. The smokeyness is only there to balance out the sweetness. This beer has many notes but it is not overly sweet. The balance works very well towards its favor. It is not too much in alcohol and managed to hit a lot of pleasure notes in the taste buds. Got this one directly from Rogue so the distribution should be hitting Bevmo and other specialty liquor stores soon. Go and pick this up, its quite interesting and delicious…lol but don’t take my word for, judge for yourself.

Morimoto Black Obi Soba Ale by Rogue Brewing

ted with Rice. This is fermented with the primary ingredient that make a Japanese Soba Ramen, so in this case, the buckwheat. I guess they were going for an Ale made with Japanese wheat or barley so to speak. Also the name in Japanese would probably be something like “Morimoto Kuro Obi Soba Eru or Biiru”.

The flavor of this ale much like I though I would probably expect. Something awesome that would go well with Ramen or Sushi. There is is soy sauce component to it, rich caramel, earthy hops with grassy bitterness, plums sauce, hazelnut, almonds and pecan, somewhat pilsnery, grainy, minor chocolate and coffee and somewhat smokey. Reminds me a little bit of the Ise Kadoya Stout…lol if it wasn’t a sour ale. All and all, I would take this beer to pair with a good sushi or Ramen or other Japanese dish. It would so fit :P.
