What great way to start the fall with some brews from my good friend and fellow review brother, Aaron Mendiola of BeerMetalDude.com. This beer comes to us from the good people at 5 Stones brewing in Cibolo, Texas. Thanks to Aaron, I have the great opportunity to bring some of these beers to the website. Many of which have been very delicious and some supremely exceptional and unique. Today, we bring you a review of their Mr. Nibbles beer. A beer that has been made with all sorts of crazy nuts. Sure, I can recall the delicious nutty peanut butter beers and even the hazelnut nectar beers, but this…. this is taking nuts to a whole new level. Let’s take a look at this new brew, cheers!

Aromas:
Maple syrup, marshmallows, bananas, clove spice, cinnamon, fruit cake, ginger bread, almond joy butter, nutter butter, hazelnut nectar, pecan pie, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, vanilla, rye bread, nutmeg, brown sugar, bananas, marzipan and praline ice cream hints.

Flavors:
Rich Almond joy butter, nutter butter, hazelnut nectar, pecan pie, toasted pumpkin seeds, cashew cream, butterscotch, toffee, dulce de leche caramel, marshmallows, leather hints, rye bread, walnut cake, dark chocolate notes, milk chocolate, Brazil nuts, macadamia nuts, peanut buttercup notes, maple syrup, molasses, bananas, clove spice, cinnamon, fruit cake, ginger bread, nutmeg, allspice, brown sugar, marzipan, mazapan, capirotada raisin bread pudding, stone fruit peach, mango hints, dark fruit raisins, cherries, dates, Danish cream and vanilla.

Aftertaste:
Finishing with rich nutty notes, toffee, chocolate notes, cinnamon, marzipan, rye bread, toffee, vanilla, dulce de leche caramel and banana notes. No alcohol in the taste, crimson medium body, smooth, creamy and slightly chewey mouthfeel and with an easy drinkability.

Overall:
Damn exceptional brew. It isn’t even barrel aged but the many points go to it for making a brown ale so complex it almost reminded me of a special Belgian Quadruple I had long ago. The mix of nuts and sweets is enough to drive someone nuts. The scary part about this is that I almost finished the whole bottle it was that damn good. Deep within the recesses of Texas and other parts of the country, people like 5 Stones are brewing beers that are damn unheard of helping people reach a special palatable Nirvana of sorts. I highly recommend you try and find this one if you live in Texas and special thanks to Aaron for the awesome hook up, always a pleasure!!

Anime Corner:
Gadget Hackwrench along with Disney’s Rescue Rangers gang were chosen in this review to go with the label furry characters. Yes, I know chipmunks and squirrels are not the same but the fact that it showed mice and a squirrel, I felt it was a great opportunity to bring it the Rescue Ranges into this pairing. This one I think works super well considering the comparisons of the woodland creatures. I also found an awesome picture with the surprised look on their faces just like the squirrel in the label is surprised about the mice. Almost like a king but in this case, Gadget would be the queen.

Umami Monster by Garage Project of New Zealand is a 9% ABV Herbed/ Spice Brown Ale brewed with Kelp, Bonito and Seawater.

Label:
It came from the deep. Brewed for GABS 2014, using New Zealand grown Kombu (kelp), Japanese Katsuobushi (dried fermented bonito flakes), smoked malt and seawater in an attempt to capture that most elusive and enigmatic of flavours – umami. Far beyond the boundaries of the accepted and expected, these ingredients combine to create a monster of dark savoury smoke and rich umami complexity. Dear God – what have we created? Definitely not suitable for vegans – sorry.

==Introduction==

I obtained this brew along with some other brews I got from Craftshack.com. When I saw the label on this one I was like oh shit! I had to get it. Being a huge fan of the King of Monsters, Godzilla! I looked into it further. Being made with actual fish flakes, sea water and kelp, it was definitely the sea monster themed beer that I would have never thought would exist. Therefore, to take my chances at the beer and see how these ingredients would work with a beer I brought it to the site. Now as we take on this monster let’s see what we can find, cheers!

Aromas:
Chocolate, anise, soy sauce, molasses, dark fruit raisins, cherries, plums, plum sauce, campfire smoked malts, earthy notes, rich rye bread, citrus oranges, tangerine gummies, Seaweed paper, sushi notes, fish hints, coffee, caramel, vanilla, sea salt chocolate, tamarind and herbs.

Flavors:
Seaweed paper, sushi notes, fish notes, oregano, basil, caramel, Edamame green beans, toffee, coffee, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, sea salt chocolate, salty tejuino maize drink, tamarind, dark fruit raisins, cherries, soy sauce, molasses, anise, maple syrup, ginger spice, garlicky notes, cinnamon, coriander spice, cumin, clove spice, campfire smoked malts, earthy notes, rich rye bread, citrus oranges, tangerine gummies and butterscotch.

Aftertaste:
Finishing off with sea salt, chocolate, dark fruit cherries, soy sauce, vanilla, caramel, earthy hops aned mild coffee. No alcohol in the taste, Crimson Brown clear to hazy dark body, crisp, smooth and rich mouthfeel along with an easy to moderate drinkability.

Overall:
Let me be honest, you really have to have an open mind for this one and one who loves delicious Japanese cuisine. If not, then this beer may not be for you and frankly, this is review will be biased as my tastes and cultural interest get blended into this beer. This is the perfect Umami beer! Simple as that. I have never had a fishy beer like this but I definitely want to try it again and pair it with a dish like Ramen, Sushi or any other Asian cuisine. This beer is damn legit and highly recommended as a pairing for meals!

King of Monsters, Godzilla and his Kaiju co-stars are presented in today’s review all done by gamerag3 ofdeviantart.com. It wasn’t hard to choose what made sense with the label and the theme of the pairing but the hard part was finding an awesome anime picture with Godzilla anthropomorphized into an anime girl. Especially one that was done well and was really bad ass. So these pictures made the best pairings in my mind.

Palo Santo Marron by Dogfish Head

Palo Santo Marron by Dogfish Head is a 12% ABV Brown ale aged on Palo Santo Wood.

Label:
An unfiltered, unfettered, unprecedented brown ale aged in handmade wooden brewing vessels. The caramel and vanilla complexity unique to this beer comes from the exotic Paraguayan Palo Santo wood from which these tanks were crafted. At 10,000 gallons each, these are the largest wooden brewing vessels built in American since before Prohibition. It’s all very exciting. We have wood. Now you do too.

Palo Santo means “holy tree,” and its wood has been used in South American wine-making communities.

==Introduction==

I got this one at Mr. K’s Liquor next to the Bruery in Placentia California. For many of the Dogfish Head beers, especially the strong ABV ones, they have been very delicious. I especially like the ones that reach into the double digits like the Fort, Worldwide Stout and their recent 20th anniversary. Definitely in your face, best beers out there. I found this one for a couple of bucks. You don’t see that from other brews especially with double digit ABVs. Even if it is not a 22oz, still good price. So with this one, being one I had not tried before, I could not pass it up and bring it to the website. So here is the Palo Santo. Not sure why they call it Holy Trees since Palo in Spanish is actually “stick”. Anyways, cheers!

Aromas:
Dark fruit cherries, raisins, plums, figs, dates, blueberries, blackberries marshmallows, campfire smores, graham crackers, capirotada raisins bread pudding, flan, Belgian candy sugars, sweetened condensed milk notes and fruit cake.

Flavors:
Dulce de leche burnt caramel on wooden container, vanilla, cinnamon, pecan pie, hazelnut nectar, capirotada raisins bread pudding, flan, Belgian candy sugars, bananas, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, oak, toffee, molasses, clove spice, dark fruit raisins, plums, figs, dates, cherries, blueberries, blackberries, blueberry cobbler, sweetened condensed milk notes, fruit cake, marshmallows, strawberries, campfire smores and graham crackers.

Aftertaste:
Finishes very rich with caramel, dark fruits, oak, toffee, vanilla candi sugar, clove spice and bananas. No alcohol in the taste, pitch black dark full body, creamy, smooth and syrupy mouthfeel along with a sipping drinkability.

Overall:
An exceptional brew! Why I haven’t bothered to pick this up is beyond me but definitely something I wish I had sooner. At 12% ABV, the rich maltiness covers all! So rich and complex, I will definitely enjoyed this. The malt forward profile is what dominates the beer so if you love malty brews, this is king. Especially for the price, I recommend people get this one. If they sell it in packs of 4, I would definitely get it. A high ABV go to beer!

Anime Corner:
Shameimaru Aya from Touhou project was used in this pairing to mainly go with some of the colors of the autumn leaves, the trees and the feathers are similar to the indigenous cultures that make up a lot of the wine using this type of wood. The colors of the label, flavors and ingredients seem to complement the artwork as well too.

Two very different members of the same tribe lending the best of each other to the conceptualization of a hybrid; such is the basis for introducing something new into the world- a mutt, if you will. It is this scenario, applied against the backdrop of Stone’s pilot brewhouse, that birthed this beer: a complex, chocolate-covered brew crafted by an unlikely yet dynamic duo, a malt bill savant and a brewer who had never met a brown ale he liked before tasting this beer. These craftsmen coming together was as inconceivable as the conception of this beer, but as with the rise of unlikely crossbreeds such as the much-adored labradoodle, it ascended ti the top of the heap in our annual in-house Stone Spotlight Series brewing competition and now rests cradled in your hands as the 2015 champion. Given fullness and layers of flavors from Vienna, Victory and Chocolate Wheat Malts, and pleasing, refined sweetness from Honey Malt and turbinado sugar, it’s a rich, smooth beer brewed with respect to traditional English methods and a heaping helping of New World Innovation. The British-American bulldog of the craft beer world? Perhaps. Best in Show? Absolutely.

==Introduction==

When I first saw this beer, it reminded me the Bailey’s Bitchin Brown Ale that my friend Will gave me for some reason. I thought maybe they took his idea but I see now it was mere coincidence as they tried to represent a mutt or dog mix as a hybrid of beers. Good show Stone. Now I bring you the review of this little beer. Hope it is awesome as brown ales are my moderate favorites and I usually tend to go for others. Cheers!

Aromas:
Caramel, smoked peat, dark frui raisins, vanilla, brown sugar, coffee cake, dark chocolate, mocha notes, oatmeal, Belgian Candi sugar, molasses, bakers chocolate, butterscotch, hazelnut nectar and pecan pie hints.

Flavors:
Brown sugar, caramel, cinnamon, smoked peat, hazelnut nectar, pecan pie, dark fruit raisins, hazelnut nectar, oatmeal, Belgian candi sugar, piloncillo sugar cone, vanilla, chocolate, coffee cake, earthy hop notes, bakers chocolate, molasses, butterscotch and peanut hints.

Aftertaste:
Hazelnut hints, earthy notes, dark chocolate, turbinado sugar and pecan notes. No alcohol in the taste, Crimson Dark full body, creamy, syrupy and velvety mouthfeel, sipping drinkability.

Overall:
This beer is awesome. Almost like a mix between a brown ale and scottish ale with some stout notes. There are some earthy hop notes in the taste which tries to balance out the sweetness and complexity. An interesting use of ingredients making this one a rush and mix of complexity. I would definitely recommend it worth trying once especially if you like brown ales. Other than that it is very good and will likely try it on tap at Stone’s store.

Anime Corner:
Original artwork by Falvie was used in this pairing as I wanted to use a dog like character to represent the mutt. Her colorful appearance with a mix of colors displays what mutts really are. A smart and diverse breed of animals. Also, her complexity represents the complexity of this beer. It does hit you hard if you are not careful, hence the hammer!

Drink It Down Brown by El Borracho Home Brewing is a 4.4% ABV American Brown Ale.

==Introduction==

My friend William Carranza’s attempt at another home brew recipe for one of his favorite beer styles, the American Brown Ale. This ale was brewed using a slight modification to the original recipe using other ingredients. As a result, he realized this was not what he had expected as the last beer was way better. The beer, at the same time, was also more drinkable as well and there for the name, Drink it down Brown was given. I got a chance to try this beer before the review and I liked it despite the fact that he did not so much. Let us take a look at this one, cheers!

Aromas:
Chocolate hints, caramel notes, mild earthy notes, brown sugar, hints of mild coffee, mild raisins, and pecan notes.

Flavors:
Caramel notes, dark chocolate hints, earthy grains, rye, mild coffee, toffee, mild raisin notes, biscuit brad, pecan notes, hazelnut and brow sugar.

Aftertaste:
Nice dry finish with mild chocolate, earthy grains, toffee, caramel and mild dark fruit. No alcohol in the taste, easy to drink and medium body.

Overall:
A pretty good Brown Ale. Will described this one as more of a New Castle like brew. For me, it is still leagues above New Castle and more flavorful at that. While it may not have been a total success for my friend, there were others like myself that really enjoyed this one. The best thing about homebrewing is experimenting sometimes and sometimes batches of beer come out exceptional and sometimes not so much. Regardless, it is still helpful to learn greater methods of brewing along the way. For that, I would recommend it.

Anime Corner:
Asuka Langley Shikinami/Sohryu from Neon Genesis Evangelion was chosen in this pairing once again as it was the best one that suited the pairing based on my friend Will’s pick from the list. Honestly, I agree as this fits well with the whole drink because you are thirsty. The colors represent the brown and the potential the beer has to grow into something more.

An American Brown with caramel. Just the thought of how this beer was made let me know I really wanted to get it. I like some brown ales but it is not my up most favorite of styles but the ones I have reviewed here on the site are definitely worth it. This one seems very tasty from what I saw that I definitely had to bring this one to the site. So let’s get it started here and dig into rich caramel bliss.

Aromas:
Pecan pie, hazelnut, earthy notes, biscuit bread, dulce de leche, vanilla, toffee, brown sugar, cinnamon, milk chocolate hints, dark fruit raisins, figs, cherries, plum hints, oak hints, butterscotch, coconut hints, marshmallow hints, flan and molasses.

Flavors:
Rich Dulce de leche caramel, Rich Toffee, pecan pie, brown sugar, flan, biscuit bread, buttered toasted bread, dark fruit raisins, figs, cherries, plums, Burnt Caramel from a wooden box, oak hints, butterscotch, honey, hazelnut nectar, molasses, milk chocolate notes, crème brulee, toasted coconut, mild hints of rocky road, marshmallow and mild cinnamon.

Aftertaste:
Earthy notes, rye bread, buttered toast, earthy notes, dulce de leche caramel, toffee and brown sugar. No alcohol in the taste, medium to full brown body, silky and slightly buttery mouthfeel, medium drinkability.

Overall:
DAMN, now that’s rich! It goes down really good. If you like caramel especially burn caramel, this small bit of cloying caramel sweetness bit may or may not be your thing, but I love it. Possibly the best brown ale I have ever had and truly defines some of the unique characteristics that I love from brown ales. The caramel is the one that stands out the most and it is the parts that makes me love this beer. I highly recommend this one for sure.

Anime Corner:
Korra from the Legend of Korra, art work by Genzoman, was used in this pairing to showcase the caramel God. While the caramel God does look indigenous in a way and was a wielder of the elements, it fit well with Korra as she has like an indigenous looking style as well and wields the elements. Ech of the elements representing different things like burnt caramel, earthy notes, silky mouthfeel and whiff of rich aromas.

Bailey Beagle’s Bitchin Brown Ale by El Borracho Home Brewing

Bailey Beagle’s Bitchin Brown Ale by El Borracho Home Brewing is a ~4.6% ABV American Brown Ale.

Another sweet donation from good friend William Carranza. This ale pays tribute to Will’s friend, Brent Rivera, who’s beagle, Bailey, had passed away recently due to medical complications. This is Will’s second beer and it is one that was cleverly named. The Tribute and the named worked. Is it a Bitchin brown ale? Let’s take a look and see.

Aromas:
Chocolate hints, hazelnut, pecans, coconut hints, caramel, earthy hop notes, mild coffee roast, brown sugar and a hint of raisin.

 

Flavors:
Caramel, hints of coconut, chocolate, rye, coffee hints, earthy notes, mild raisin notes, biscuit bread, brown sugar, hazelnut, toffee, pecans and peanuts.

 

Aftertaste:

A nice dry finish with a bit of lingering toffee, earthy notes and caramel. No alcohol in the taste, easy to drink even with a medium to full body.

 

Overall:

A very Bitchin brown ale indeed! There were some flavors in this beer that at different temperatures reminded me of other sweet flavors I would probably find in other beers. It is well crafted and definitely goes to show that anyone with a little know how can make really good beers. Now I just have to get my kit and star brewing soon.

Anime Corner:
Winry Rockbell from Full Metal Alchemist is used in this pairing to pay tribute to man’s best friend. The different shades of brown in this picture coincide with the delicious flavors of this Brown ale. It has different layers of flavors that remind me of other flavors I have seen in other beers, especially the coconut one. The dog in the picture also pairs as this is shows how dedicated the dog is to their owners. A lot of dedication went into making the beer, and if Bailey could drink beer, I am sure she would have enjoy it!

Teaming up with Terrapin Beer Co. for the third time, Shmaltz Brewing returns as a production partner for Reunion ’13. We brew Reunion each year in memory of our dear friend and partner in this venture – Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle with Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise finds and awareness on behalf of The Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (www.imbcr.org). 

This year’s beer is a dark ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla, cinnamon and coffee from NYC and Upstate NY. It was inspired by a fantastic dessert that we used to share with Virginia at our favorite restaurant. 

Many thanks to all who have supported this project and have helped us honor Virginia’s Memory.

This is the first time I try the Reunion series. A beer with cocoa nibs, vanilla, cinnamon and coffee? Yes Please. The good thing about the beer as well is that it is for a good cause. My mother died of cancer so anything that works toward fighting the dreaded disease is a definite win in my book.

Aromas are of coffee, hints of chocolate, mocha, hints of vanilla, cinnamon, brown sugar, caramel, biscuit bread, clove hints and nutmeg

Flavors are of coffee mainly, roasted coffee grounds, nutty mocha, vanilla notes, chocolate, cinnamon, nutmeg, caramel, toffee, biscuit bread and clove spice

Aftertaste leaves with cinnamon, dark chocolate notes, coffee roast and a little bit of vanilla and close to dry finish. Alcohol hidden but moderate drinkability.

Overall, the beer is really good although, just be cause it says cocoa nibs and vanilla, you gotta be a little picky. The chocolate and vanilla though comes in subtle being taken over by cinnamon and coffee flavors near the end. It is one that you may want to be careful though because if you do not like cinnamon and coffee, this beer might not be for you I personally like this combination but I think I like chocolate and vanilla better. It is more on the spicy side than the sweet side. Recommended especially since it is really good and for a good cause.

Anime Corner:
Tifa Lockhart and Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII are paired with this beer for a couple of reasons. Besides the fact that Reunion is important in the series when it comes to Jenova and Sephiroth form the same series. However, reunion of Cloud and Tifa in this sense because they come together to thwart off the evil. The colors in the label represent mako energy from the series which you can see is greenish. Fighting for a good cause to save the world, this beer fights for the battle against cancer, therefore, fight on!!

Bottled 04/26/2013. May not be as fresh, but I will give it the benefit of a doubt. You see, I picked this up for review because during one of my outings when trying different beers, I came across this one. I have had other Lost Coast beers but have not had a chance to put these on my blog. They are are pretty good beers. This one was very rich in raspberry

Aromas are of chocolate, rich raspberry tootsie rolls, caramel, toffee, pecans, hazelnuts and brown sugar.

Flavors are of dark chocolate, raspberries, bitter coffee notes, caramel, tootsie rolls and tootsie pops, hazelnuts, cherry candy, biscuit bread, butterscotch, buttered toast, pecans, milk chocolate notes and toffee.

Aftertaste is kind of like tootsie rolls and remains for a bit before fading, easy to drink, sweet mostly.

Overall, I liked this beer on what it was meant for. A sweet chocolate dessert. Maybe not super complex like some of the more awesome raspberry or cherry beers (Yes I am looking at you Bourbon County Cherry Rye :P) but it gets the job done. When I first drank this I liked the sweetness of it, maybe not the complexity but the sweetness. It is no overpowering but easy to drink with mild to moderate flavors. To me it was very good and I am sticking with it. Creamy, fruity, sweet and mildly velvety. Delicious stuff if you choose to see it that way. Love my sweet beers .

The first time I had this beer was at my friend Chino’s house. We were trying different beers and our friend Johan brought a 12 pack of Kona Brewing beers. I had to get this one again as this one made the most impression on me. As I remember the beer, there was a lot of coconut and coffee flavors but also vanilla and caramel which are essentials in some of the notes found in some of my favorite Barrel Aged beers. So I am doing an actual review now to break it down.

The aromas of this beer are of toasted coconut, caramel, hints of vanilla, slight hazelnut, brown sugar and coffee. The flavors are of toasted coconut, roasted coffee, slight caramel, vanilla cream, brown sugar, hazelnut notes, maple syrup notes and buttered toast. The drinkability is good. It goes down smooth with not any one flavor too overwhelming. It is a lighter beer yet the flavors are very reminiscent of a nice barrel aged beer although it is only flavors and not intensity. Meaning if you are looking into seeing some of the types of flavors you may find in bourbon barrel aged beers but are relatively new to craft beer, this is a good gateway intro. Like I said, before I was pretty surprised by this one and enjoyed it more than I thought I would have 🙂

Defined as “serving no practical purpose”, the recipe for Otiose was developed during a rare break in the brewing schedule; a recipe we came up with to satisfy our own desires and nothing more. The result is a sour brown ale aged in oak barrels to which we added guava. Riddled with tropical notes which are balanced by it’s malty backbone, Otiose is a rich and decadent sour ale. 8.2%, Cellerable for up to 3 years.

The fragrance of this beer are of sour wine grapes, notes of caramel, guava, lemon citrus, passion fruit, plum notes, apples, cranberry, raspberry, oak and vanilla. Aside from the sour grape wine flavor, this beer has some nice sweet notes. Flavors of pecan, guava, banana notes, cherry, raspberry, caramel, toffee, vanilla, oak, brown sugar, citrus, lemon, grapefruit, honey, some toasted rye bread and some sour funkyness. The beer is quite balanced. There is enough tart and caramel notes to make it pretty interesting. This is similar to some of the great Jolly Pumpkin ales. So if you love sours, have fun trying this one 😛

Right up there with Board Meeting, considered a world class beer among reviewers. This beer fragrance is close to a porter with its aromas of chocolate, coffee, mocha, milk chocolate, rich caramel, vanilla, brown sugar, hazelnut, slight brownies and some raisin notes. The flavors are of coffee, hazelnut, caramel, earthy hop bitterness, coffee and chocolate cake, some plum and raisin notes as the beer warms up. The after taste of mocha and hazelnut stays with you for a bit. Definitely up there with the best of the browns ales in the world. Although the Board meeting was slightly a little more delicious, this is still a great and awesome beer.

It’s 6 AM and you have two appointments on your calendar for today. A Board of Directors meeting at 10 AM requires your attention. But Last night you got the call signaling a dawn patrol session this morning. Surf is out of the west and the swell is building. A morning stop for a cup of Joe on the way to the ocean’s edge has you fueled. Early morning surf report on the radio indicates clean conditions up and down the coast. A Parking lot surf check at the break confirms the conditions are perfect. 

All systems go and your first board meeting of the day looks promising. You trade a neoprene wet suit and a brisk ocean paddle knowing full well later you’s be surrounded by stodgy old men and fussy women sitting in over stuffed leather chairs reviewing corporate minutes as the smell of pastries and burnt coffee hang in the air. It’s a scene that repeats itself year after year . But none of this bothers you anymore. Life taught you early on not all board meetings are created equal.

New from Port Brewing comes a brown ale unlike some of the brown ales I have had before. This beer is more full bodied like a porter or a stout. But I guess in terms of brown ales I would have to look and see how it would differ. The aromas are of coffee, chocolate, caramel, vanilla, hazelnut, earthy notes, and brown sugar. The flavors are great. It is not as bitter as a porter or a stout in terms of hops and smokeyness. This lets flavors of bakes chocolate, dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, caramel, biscuit bread, coffee cake, brown sugar, hazelnut, berries, figs, and other sweet flavors shine through. The bitterness is very little as it is mostly from the coffee. This beer was so good it was hard not to stop drinking it. It is pretty drinkable and the aftertaste is sweet and nutty. Quite frankly one of the best brown ales I have had in a while. Aside from hazelnut nectar. This is going to be a new beer that will appear regularly. Brown Ale fans will love this one and those that do not like Brown Ales will start to love the style with this one

I am a big fan of the Hazelnut Brown Nectar, so to find that they made a Rum aged version is simply awesome. The aroma of this version is of pecans, hazelnuts, walnuts, dark fruits like a wine grapes, rum, almost like a coca cola, molasses, brown sugar, slight sour grapes, prunes, biscuit bread and caramel, cinnamon, oak and other spices. The taste is of sour grapes, prunes, rum, coconut, some hazelnut, cranberries, vanilla caramel, biscuit bread, pecans, cinnamon, oak, earthy hops, lemon and spices. The aftertaste is a mix of sweet and some sour flavors. At first it was mostly sour but then the beer got better as I went along adding more spicy and sweeter hazelnut and berry notes. An interesting beer for sure, but I still liked the original much better. This version takes it into interesting places of flavor but just not where I thought it would. The beer is not bad, in fact its very good but not sure if it was because of the low ABV but sometimes with Barrel Aging beer, it takes beers into planes of higher complexity. This did it but only into the “light” type of complexity. Still, if you like Hazelnut Nectar, you may like this one.
