Imperial Mexican Biscotti Cake Break collaboration by Evil Twin Brewing and WestBrook brewing is a 10.5% ABV Imperial Stout with Coffee, Cinnamon, Almonds, Cocoa Nibs, Vanilla and Habanero peppers added.
Now this is something I never knew would ever happen. You take 2 of some of the best beers out there and make a blend recipe. Now, I have seen the Cuvee that has done something similar to this like when Boulevard and Firestone did their Collaboration beer which used Velvet Merkin, Stickee Monkee, Imperial Stout Tart Cherry X and Bourbon Barrel Quad to create a very special Cuvee. This is a similar idea although while many of those beers are awesome, Mexican Cake has been one of those aftermarket second hand beers that sells for a damn markup and is hard to get. Essentially, taking an awesome coveted brew like that one and using one of Evil Twin’s finest, the Imperial Biscotti Break and making something special that many people can actually get. Although I would not be surprised if this one goes the way of the “hard to find” brews as it is Mexican Cake after all. I had tried their Tequila Barrel Aged Mexican Cake in the past which was awesome in it’s own rights. Finishing rich in toffee, caramel, dark chocolate, dark fruits, dark cherries, earthy notes, molasses, bananas, spicy pepper notes, champurrado, almond joy and marzipan. No alcohol in the taste, pitch black dark full body, smooth, creamy, chewy, velvety and syrupy mouthfeel along with a sipping drinkability.
Unbelievable! The blending of the Imperial Biscotti with Mexican cake is definitely something completely different. I have had the Mexican Cake in Tequila form which was amazing as well as the Imperial Biscotti break in many variants. The fact that this one is a special blend is seriously amazing especially for the fact that both beers are in a league of their own. It’s like if The Bruery and Three Floyds blended Dark Lord and Black Tuesday. Anyways, the beer itself is a complex drink of both worlds blending some spicy heat from the habanero peppers and Mexican chocolate with the Marzipan like flavors of the Biscotti imparted by the coffee, vanilla and almonds. The outcome is something that works in a directions that is unfathomable. For the original Mexican Cake being so pricey, now you can enjoy something that is bigger than than into a Super Saiyan Fusion of beer. A huge recommendation for a bucket lister like this one.
Noembelu from Street Fighter, Yoruichi Shihouin from Bleach and Vocaloid Hatsune Miku were used in this pairing as I wanted to mainly do the Mexican characteristics of the beer. Noembelu is essentially from the indigenous tribe where T. Hawk is from in Mexico so she was a perfect pairing for this beer. Yoruichi I have used in a previous Mexican brew and Miku I used in in the Tequila barrel Mexican Cake. Funny thing about Miku is that she has sung concerts in Mexico in Spanish sporting Mexican attire. So definitely had to bring her for this pairing as well.
Matt’s Burning Rosids (1.5 years aged) by Stone Brewing is a 10.5% ABV Imperial CherryWood Smoked Saison.
Honoring His Memory
Life is extraordinarily precious, joyous…and fragile. In 2013, we suffered the tragic loss of our dear friend and coworker, Matt Courtright. In the midst of our grief, we pulled together as the family we are, suggesting and exploring numerous ways to pay tribute to our dearly departed colleague. In the end, we felt there was no finer way to honor his memory than to brew one of his most recent and special beer recipes.
Everyone at Stone recognized Matt’s prowess and passion for brewing. He loved to explore all beer could be, rather than limit himself or his brews to accepted parameters. He conceived a Belgian-style saison with his Stone friend and compatriot, Brian Bishop. Infused with cherrywood-smoked malt, the beer was dubbed Burning Rosids, referencing the rosid plant family from which cherry trees hail.
Matt’s smile and voluminous laugh were infectious mainstays around the brewery. By no means a shrinking violet, he was exuberant, courageous, unfailingly positive and the type of stalwart friend that everyone was happy to have in their corner. He was larger than life in so many ways…and without a doubt, an incredible brewer. We, Matt’s brewing comrades and friends at Stone were proud to hoist our mash paddles and brew this recipe as a symbolic gesture of how much he meant to everyone and how immensely we will miss him.
Rather than regarding Burning Rosids as a somber memento, please think of it as a celebration of Matt. We do. When you drink this very special beer, please join us in raising your glass, both in Matt’s memory and in tribute to everything he so passionately stood for: caring for others, passion and skill for his art, and laughter…lots of laughter. Among the long list of things he held dear were GoDesignInc.org, a charity committed to fulfilling the architectural needs of developing communities around the world; and TKF, a non-profit working to stop youth violence by educating, mentoring and making positive impacts on high-risk communities. We are proudly contributing funds earned through the sale of this beer to this worthy organization in Matt’s honor.

Picked this one up as it is no longer brewed. I love that it is still around in some locations. Never got a chance to do a review but since I do remember how good this one was back then, I wanted to do the review. It is a special beer in honor of someone who lived and died for their passion, which was craft brewing. Many would say how they die by the sword as an honor to serve the greater purpose. Life is short and the meaning is to live for something you love. In this modern society case, we live and breathe craft beer and share with our loved ones our passion for what the craft beer movement really stands for. So much so, that as for me, trying different beers, to reviewing them and now home brewing to share that passion and educate others is something that I really do love. Everyone has something they cherish. Well, for me, my family and friends are very important, but also share the love Anime and Craftbeer. So to bring this beer forth and review but also reflect on life and its own treasures of the senses and experience, I can simply just raise that glass and say cheers to life, to Matt and all other passionate people that really work hard to make that difference in people’s life for even the smallest influence and contribution changes the world for the better. Finishes with some smokey notes, stone fruit peach, orange preserves, earthy notes, grapefruit and floral hops and bananas. No alcohol in the taste as it has mellowed over time, easy to moderate drinkability, creamy, syrupy and a Golden Cherry light to medium body.
1 year and a half later and this beer is damn phenomenal. So much more richer flavors than when I first tried it on tap sometime last year. The rich phenolic flavors of the Belgian styles, Saisons along with the smokiness that brings about delicious flavors that developed overtime. Essentially, giving way to much stronger fruits and flowers. Much like the way the flowers blossom when they are ripe. This is very delicious and if you ever find more of this beer, it is worth saving a couple of bottles. In Matt’s memory, he would have loved this beer. Cheers to you Matt!
Vocaloid Sakura Miku was used in this pairing for the Cherry blossoms/Sakura aspect of the flavors and cherry wood. I have not used this Cherry version of Miku as I never knew it existed. My original pairing for the beer was mainly to be something with cherries, the forest or even burning rosids. I found this artwork as I feel it pairs the best. Very lighthearted, innocent but yet power and delicious like the beer and the tribute to Matt.
Rainbow Triplin’ by Stone brewing is an 8.2% ABV Belgian Tripel brewed with Strawberries, Oranges, Lemons, Limes & Grapes.
Obtained this on as a Crowler at Stone Company Store in Pasadena for their 3rd Anniversary party. Unfortunately, I did not know much about this beer as I went there to get the Reposado Tequila Cali-Belgique. However, first taste and I was completely mind fucked and taste fucked as well (is that even a saying?). Essentially, the name was not kidding. Something about the flavors of this beer make you trip flavor wise since there is so much going on and all pointing to Skittles and tasting the rainbow. The fruity flavors are super forward like Skittles candies. So, I was able to bring this one for the review but just trying this beer makes me wonder how to get a home brew to be like this? Time will tell, for now, let me tell you about this beer now that I was able to get a Crowler of this.
Super rich fruits, Starburst candy, Skittles, Floral Fabuloso Lavender, dark cherries, strawberries, tart cranberries, pomegranate, pink lemonade, lemon drop candies, peaches, limes, grapes, peppercorns, vanilla, gummy bears, oranges and all sorts of tropical fruit.
Lots of Skittles flavors, Mango, tangerine, lemons, pink lemonade, lemon drop candies, peaches, limes, grapes, grapefruit, pineapple, dark cherries, strawberries, tart cranberries, pomegranate, blue berries, oranges, honey dew melon, papaya, kiwi, passion fruit, dragon fruit, biscuit bread, herbal and floral hops, hibiscus, lavender, sour apples, white raisins, peppercorns, Belgian candy sugar, ginger spice, lychee, gummy bears, gummy works and mint.
Finish somewhat dry with lots of citrus and berry flavors forward including Tart cherries, lemon, lime, grapes, Oranges and grapefruit. No alcohol in the taste, light to medium pink and gold body, crisp, clean, smooth and refreshing mouthfeel with a super easy drinkaility.
There is a reason why this beer is a real trip as you get punched in the face with a lot of tropical fruits. A perfect tropical, and more importantly, skittles Tripel. Essentially trying to figure out all the fruit flavors in this beer is a real trip as well. Wonder how they were able to get so much fruit flavor from this beer. It is pretty crazy. If you ever get to see this on tap, you definitely want to do yourself a flavor and taste that damn rainbow!
Vocaloid Hatsune Miku was used in this pairing as I wanted to find a picture that related rainbows with a “trippy” piece of art. As she rides the rainbow, it is like saying, she rides the rainbow across your taste buds is like music to the taste budal ear. Super fresh, super fruity, super trippy!!
2015 Batch No.1 Levud’s by The Bruery is a 9.6% ABV Belgian Golden Ale
The first beer that we ever brewed, now the first brewed on our new brewhouse. With Czech and Slovenian hops, this crisp, complex ale is sure to delight.
In 2008, we congratulated Mark Graham and Loren Miraglia for winning our Batch No. 1 Homebrew competition by brewing their beer as our very first batch. Recently, we decommissioned our original brewhouse and brought a new, state-of-the-art brewhouse to life. Recreating our first recipe seemed the best way to begin this new chapter in our brewing history. Levud’s is a Belgian-style golden ale that’s crisp, effervescent, complex and filled with memories and significance in our brewery’s history.
Essentially, the original flagship beer of the Bruery. Their first batch was released once again 7 years since they first opened. This beer was released to Reserve Society members but I also had the chance to try the original when I went to this years Black Tuesday Treatment Workshop. It was essentially, a delicious Golden Ale. Now as I try to remember how the original one was, I will see how this one is as it is a fresh bottle while the other is 7 years old. Let’s see how it is. Cheers!

Floral notes, oranges, lemon grass, honey dew melons, peppercorn, mango hints, pineapple, strawberry notes, grapefruit, piney and herbal hops, phenolic notes, Belgian Candy Sugar, Rock Candy, bubble gum notes, bananas, clove spice, stone fruit peaches, apricots, pears, apples, dragon fruit, honey, vanilla, kiwi notes, papaya, marzipan and passion fruit.
Finishes dry with some nice notes of the Belgian candy sugar, tropical fruit hints, stone fruits, phenolic notes, bread, peppercorn and herbal hops notes. No alcohol in the taste despite the ABV, Sipping drinkability, clear golden light body, crisp, clean, refreshing and moderate mouthfeel.
A splendid first batch! This one was similar to the one I tried but not as hoppy. I think the nice hops give this one more of a balanced and complex taste with the flavors expanding on some of the flavors I love from Belgian IPAs and Golden Ales. Simply delicious. They surely have grown form all those years ago. While this beer is not the best and is similar to other delicious Golden Ales and Belgian IPAs, the style is made perfectly. Cheers to more years of beers!
Vocaloid Hatsune Miku was used in this pairing as I wanted to pair with the color of the green label but also because she is a symbol of Anime culture and popularity of the medium just like the Bruery is a symbol of the craft beer culture and are very popular among many craft beer drinkers for their initiative to think outside the box and be very experimental. Also, the background pairs well with the many flavors of the beer.
Hop Drop ‘N Roll by NoDa brewing is a 7.2% ABV World Class India Pale Ale.
Our West Coast style IPA hits you with a ton of juicy hop flavor that shines out from a substantial and complex malt backbone. We use Citra, amarillo, Centenial, warrior and chinook in 10 separate additions to provide the intense hop blast found within this can.

Finishing with Tangerine, piney, grassy and grapefruit hops, citrus oranges, honey dew melon notes and biscuit bread. No alcohol in the taste, very drinkable, crisp, refreshing and almost creamy mouth feel and hazy orange full body.
This one is a perfect example of a great citrusy IPA with good balance. A beer like this has its place to be one of the best in the style. While I mainly prefer the more tropical forward IPAs, this one is very enjoyable and is one I would love to try and drink all the time. I would highly recommend it and thank Aaron for the share. Vocaloid Hatsune Miku was used in this pairing to pair with the name and the label as well as the colors of the label. Hop Drop ‘N Roll sounds like taking off in a hurry or speeding in a race. While the beer is very drinkable at that it flows super well which corresponds with the speed of how fast you want to drink this one. The car may not be the same as the label but you kind of get the idea.
Bière De Mars by Jolly Pumpkin is a 7% ABV French Style Stock Ale (Bière de Garde) aged in oak Barrels.
Brewed with two yeasts, mellowed in large oak casks, and refermented in the bottle, our Biere de Garde is a sustaining beer that is brewed to comfort in the gusty tides of March and welcome in a wealth of warmer weather.

A grand return to an old Jolly Pumpkin beer I haven’t tried since 2011, or at least the grand reserve version. I posted the old review on this site in October 2012 thought when I finally started doing my reviews publicly. At the time, I was involved in a car accident which thankfully I came out alive. At the time, I had saved the reserve version of the beer to try it and I really wanted to give it a shot since I figured, a great life is worth living it for what you love to do. In the essence of that beer, I had to bring the original to the stage. While my flavor palate has matured, the original beer vs. the Grand Reserve may vary. So in essence, you be the judge of how you want your beer to be. Cheers!

A great example of a Biere de Garde done right. This is very delicious. Sour notes mainly turn into tart but sweet notes while maintaining a backlog of sourness to remind you. This why when you are a brewery that only concentrates at the Sour ales you are good at, you can truly make magic. There aren;t a lot of sour breweries or breweries in general that make beer this good. Even I have a rough time with some of the Bruery sours admittedly sometimes. Needless to say, this beer brings me back to the days I would always get Jolly Pumpkin beers and remind me of where my sour tasting roots came from. I definitely recommend this one without a doubt. Even some people that do not like sours may tolerate or even fully enjoy this one for sure.
Vocaloid Hatsune Miku in her art design by subaru01rins was used in this pairing because I wanted to pair something similar to the original artwork I used for the grand reserve long ago. When I stumbled upon the T-Shirt at Anime Expo which was made by WeLoveFine (http://www.welovefine.com/6946-i-am-your-melody.html#.U9hlYfldVuN) I had to buy it. After looking at the artwork, it was very bad ass and made me realize why I chose the tron evil looking being with the red eyes back then. It had to do with the fact that in the label, the wind blowing the ship represented the the blowing the light of hope. While Miku looks evil here, either way, by her saying ‘I AM YOUR MELODY’ it plays at the whole aspect of evil blowing in the wind. Not to say that she is evil, but more like say that while you may have a good side, you also have a bad side that tries to balance who you are. Biere de Mars (Especially because of my birthday) represents a lot and in the sense of importance. It goes to show that even in the most sourest of states, the sweetness will be there to balance things out. Just like the beer. Oh yeah and also, the fruits like the sweet strawberries, are represented by the crimson eyes of Miku. Green is the color of the sour apples.
Bird on a Wire by Crispin Cider Company is a 6.9% ABV Blended Hard Cider aged in Bourbon whiskey casks with Tupelo Honey.
Authentic American alt.country cider. Not forever, just for now.
Dances across the palate, like a band playing and people swayin’. Spend some time, wait a minute. Set it free.
Blended using 4 unique apple-wines aged in both rye and Bourbon American whiskey barrels. Apple-wines fermented with:Irish Stout yeast, Belgian Trappist yeast,Sake yeast and our original Colfax Classic.
The final blend is finished with Tupelo Honey aged in Bourbon barrels and a lingering open-mouthed kiss of fresh-pressed apple juice.
Balanced and very smooth, toasted oaktannins, whiskey notes, with soft rye spice, cask-woody vanilla and cinnamon.
Blended straight from whiskey barrels.Give a solid bottoms-up tilt and swirl to disperse sediment evenly and best enjoy whiskey aromas and unique bouquet.
Enjoyed at cellar temperature, 50/55F.With or without 1 or 2 ice cubes. Age-worthy.
Regardless of being a Coors subordinate, they make some hell good ciders. So far I have reviewed the ciders fermented in Irish Stout yeast and Trappist yeast, the latter being my favorite. Now I think I have a new favorite with this one.
First aromas that come as soon as you open the bottle is whiskey and rich stuff at that. It is followed by that bourbon vanilla sweetness, caramel, coconut, rye bread, cinnamon, apple, honey, oak, spices and brown sugar.
The flavors are of cider apples, whiskey, bourbon vanilla, oak, slight coconut notes, dulce de leche caramel flan notes, honey, crème brulee, white wine, champagne, brown sugar, cinnamon, french toast with apple butter, rye bread and cinnamon, bear claw doughnut with apples and cinnamon, and apple pie with rich caramel.
No doubt about it, a little at that, but still freaking amazing. Really brings about great Cask/Barrel aged goodness as some of the best bourbon liquors and bourbon aged beers can bring but in cider form. Who knew cider can deliver a good level of craft in its own way. I gotta find more of these bottles. They need to make 22oz. Bottles of this or even make like a 6 pack. This would make for a great cider for people to try for those that are skeptical of trying the Craft Cider side of beverage connoisseurship.
Hop Kitchen Series – Hoppy Bock Lager by New Belgium brewing is a 6.9%ABV German Maibock/Helles Bock.
Meet the first in our new Hop Kitchen series: A German-style springtime lager brewed with rye then loaded with Hallertauer, Perle and Fuggle hops for a spicy, earthy aroma. This Hoppy Bock Lager offers a medium body and slightly sweet malt character perfect for your spring hop-fling.
For being a light bock, it sure has more hoppy aromas. There are aromas of hop grass, some what piney, not too citrusy but just a bit and not tropical, caramel aromas, some honey, and biscuit bread. The flavors are of grassy hops, honey, herbs, honey, some caramel, some peppery notes, slight biscuit and rye bread, orange peel, citrus, pilsner grain and slight notes of flowers. Definitely not like Dead Guy Ale and closer to a pale ale or pilsner with some German notes but that is really all there is too it. It is a good beer to try but nothing super extravagant. Surely worth a try at least once. You do gotta admit though, it is is a tasty lager and once many lager drinkers would probably enjoy than plain old lager.
Johnny Cask/75 Minute IPA by Dogfish Head is a 7.5% ABV India Pale Ale made with maple syrup. So here’s the thing, the original intention of DFH was to put Johnny Cash in the label for their 75 minute IPA but due to legal reason they had to “slightly modify” the original label. Either way, that is still Johnny Cash as you can see from their website here: (http://www.dogfish.com/community/news/press-releases/dogfish-announces-75-minute-ipa-simul-cask.htm) Also, it is the same beer too just one from a cask and the other bottled.
There are some situations when 90 is too much. There are other situations when 60 is too little. There are many situations when 75is juuuust riight. Bottle-Conditioned with pure maple syrup for complexity and dry-hopped out the bejeezum boards.
The fragrance of the Johnny Cash/Cask beer is kind of piney and hoppy but there is some biscuit bread and caramel notes in the smell. Some orange and roasted peanut aromas as well. The flavors are pretty good. Biscuit bread, caramel, minor herbs and spices, grassy, floral hops, grapefruit, orange (but slight, not like the 90 minute gummy bears orange), slight tangerine, some maple, oak wood and grape. Not at the lowest of bitterness as 90 minute IPA, yet still alittle bit bitter. The truth is when it comes to how bitter and sweet this beer is, it is quite balanced. Not too extreme like the 90 minute or the 120 minute which is not for unprepared palates, but just right in the middle. Sweet and bitter still get along so you still get a bit of both flavors. Not quite a double IPA and not quite an IPA but an IPA and a half. Still pretty awesome stuff.
