Frootwood by Founders brewing

Frootwood by Founders brewing is an 8% ABV Cherry Ale aged in Maple Syrup Bourbon Barrels

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We took a crisp, light-bodied cherry ale and hid it away in oak barrels that have held both bourbon and maple syrup. After a lengthy stint, it emerged a changed beer, blanketed in notes of warm vanilla and earthy sweetness. The wood proves itself the star of this beer, adding depth and taming the tart cherry while the maple imposes a velvety texture that lingers for not a moment too long.

The 4th Barrel aged brew I have ever tried from the Founders series of beers. KBS, Backwoods Bastard and Lizard of Koz were the other three. This time they bring a beer with cherries which I believe was the original brew, Cerise and barrel aged that in barrels that previously had Maple syrup and Bourbon barrels to cream this light bodied beer. It was strange at first since many of their barrel aged beers I expected this to be darker but this is very nice. Regardless, Founders has been a great brewery since the days of their Breakfast Stout and to this day I enjoy getting my hands on them whenever I can. Letโ€™s take a look at this one and see how good The โ€œFruit Woodโ€ is. Cheers!

Aromas:
Maple, dark cherries, cinnamon, mint, yerba buena tea, green tea ice cream, sweetened condensed milk notes, Danish cream, ginger bread, brown sugar, honey, floral notes, roses, apple cider, stone fruit, vanilla and caramel.

Flavors:
Rich Dark Cherries, Cinnamon tea, brown sugar, maple, vanilla, caramel oak, bourbon, marzipan, chardonnay, wine grapes, honey, floral notes, roses, stone fruit peaches, apple pie, cherry cobbler, peach cobbler, mint, yerba buena tea, green tea ice cream, sweetened condensed milk notes, biscuit bread, butterscotch, apple cider, Danish cream, ginger bread, fruit cake hints and cookie dough ice cream hints.

Aftertaste:
Finishing semi dry with cherry, oak, maple, wine grapes and vanilla. No alcohol in the taste, light to medium amber body, crisp, refreshing, smooth and clean mouthfeel along with a very easy drinkability.

Overall:
A very nice exceptional hitter. The flavors are not super complex but there is an array of reasons why I consider this one very exceptional. For starters, ridiculously easy to drink, not offending in the alcohol, very nice flavors are noted and the semi dry finish is something that keeps you wanting more. You can easily finish this in one sitting if not careful. The very interesting thing about this beer is that it is not cloying at all. This can definitely be very approachable to non beer drinkers. I highly recommended.

Anime Corner:
Ruby Rose from RWBY was chosen in this pairing for the colors that pair well with her and the red of cherries and dark maple and oak bourbon. Even the color of the beer as well showcases the ruby and rose colors in general that fit well with the beer.

2016 Oude Tart with Cherries by The Bruery Terreux

2016 Oude Tart with Cherries by The Bruery Terreux is an 8.4% ABV World Class Flanders/Flemish Red Ale aged in oak barrels with Cherries.

Label:
Plump-Leathery-Tangy

Commercial Description:
Oude Tart is a Flemish-Style Red Ale aged in red wine barrels for up to 18 months. This version has had cherries added for the final stages of barrel aging. It’s pleasantly sour with hints of leather, tangy dark fruit, plump cherries and toasty oak. While the base beer is one of the more classic styles that we make, it’s not a style that you can find too often in the United States. Originating in style from the Flanders region of Belgium, near the French border, this dark, sour ale has roots deep in brewing history and predates most of the ales that have become popular in contemporary culture. We’re doing our best to keep the tradition alive by brewing and aging this beer here on the West Coast.

==Introduction==

Releases to all societies of the Bruery, this is the second time I try this beer. The first time I tried I had recalled all the delicious cherry flavors and how it definitely made a mark. To me it felt so much that I had to bring it back for another go. Now with much more released, you may get a chance to try it this time if you for the society membership. Letโ€™s see how this new batch does.

Aromas:
Caramel, rye bread, dark cherries, dark fruit raisins, plums, currants, raspberries, oak mustiness, lemon, leather, brown sugar, vanilla, funky wine grapes, tart cherry juice, sour apples, cherry pie, pecan pie hints, cinnamon, oak, hazelnut and cherry cheesecake notes.

Flavors:
Dark Cherry forward, Black Cherry Yogurt, lemon peels, biscuit bread, dark fruit raisins, plums, currants, figs, vanilla, oak, leather, tobacco, cherry preserves on rye bread, crรจme brulee, toffee, red wine, wine grapes, cherry cobbler, caramel, cherry cheesecake, brown sugar, tropical fruit notes of pineapple, stone fruit apricots, mango, pecan pie, coconut hints, cherry cobbler, fruit cake, and Danish cookies.

Aftertaste:
Finishing with dry notes of caramel, vanilla, cinnamon, dark cherry yogurt, and wine oak notes. No alcohol in the taste, medium reddish brown body, creamy, effervescent, velvety mouthfeel and moderate to sipping drinkability.

Overall:
Very delicious and as always, love how the Cherries just go through the sourness and give more of like a sweet dark cherry tart yogurt flavor. The complexity is just as awesome as when I had it before and while I think the Cherries do change the dynamic of the original oude tart, it essentially makes it very appealing. Good thing now the preservation societies can enjoy this one as well and soon, the public. Highly recommended sours.

Anime Corner:
Ruby Rose and her sister Yang Xiao Long from RWBY were used in this pairing since I used Yang in the Oude Tar Pairing. In fact, they were used in the previous Oude Tart Cherries pairing. Because of the fact that they are sisters, putting them together is like adding the cherries to Oude Tart. Ruby Rose, ofcourse is the cherry here. They are an awesome team. I wanted to show how the beer tends to be a splash of fruity flavors as you can see Ruby jumping in to add that layer of complexity.

Heff By Black Cherries – Chapter 2: And In The Darkness of Cherries Bind them by Nubis Sanctum Ales is a 5.6% ABV German Hefeweizen brewed with Organic Black Cherry juice.

==Introduction==

12471520_10103011321304930_52753629154939362142_o
Project # 16 pays tribute and the return of an old favorite from last year. I brewed this recipe last year as a Dunkelweizen and this year I brought it back making some slight adjustments to the recipe and using the Weihenstephan Weizen Yeast strain as well as different malt and hops. This is the results. In an attempt to make this beer, as it was dubbed a winner among many of my family and friends who typically drink light beer, I had to bring it back. In this project, now coming from several batches in, I hope it is still as great as what I remember. It is still dark heff like before but I think falls more towards the regular heff style. Let’s see what I find, cheers!

Aromas:
Bananas, dark cherry notes, stone fruits, honey, citrus, fruity pebbles hints, coriander spice, clove spice, brown sugar, vanilla and caramel.

Flavors:
Dark fruit raisins, dark cherries, figs, dates, Bananas, banana cream pie, clove spice, tart raspberry hints, coriander spice, clove spice, candi sugar, vanilla, honey, orange peels, citrus, toffee, caramel, stone fruit peach, apricots, earthy hop notes, crรจme brulee, dark cherry preserves on rye toast and flan.

Aftertaste:
Finishes with a minor tart yet citrusy hop finish with the notes of dark fruit raisins, dark cherries, bananas, clove spice, peach hints, earthy hops and honey. No alcohol in the taste, honey colored hazy full body, crisp, refreshing, smooth and an easy drinkability.

Overall:
A very good hefeweizen and definitely better than the one I made last yeast. I think by slightly adjusting the recipe, it did pay off as there seems to be more of a balance between the sweet, bitter and tartyness. Right off the bat, the brew is sweet and tart and balanced. As it warms up, thatโ€™s where it gets much better with in regards to the banana split like flavors. I think the flavors of the cherry really blended well with the banana clove spices of the yeast making a beer that I could definitely call a flash ship for sure.

Anime Corner:
Ruby Rose from RWBY was used in this pairing to mainly to represent the Black Cherries of the beer. She was used similarly in chapter one but since the beer became so delicious, by making a return, it would entice the drinker into wanting even more since the recipe would be better this time around. You see, the name of And Through the Darkness of Cherries Bind Them, goes so well with the second picture where she is about to decapitate the wolf as the wolf is so bound by her, โ€œHeffโ€ is inevitable. The name Heff By Black Cherries is a pun at Death By Black Cherries as since Ruby carries around a scythe, I thought it was perfect as she is the โ€œBlack Cherry Death that causes the Heff to be Heffed.โ€ So for those that drink this beer, they are immediately enticed and cannot escape Heff!! Rose petals represent the cherries swirling as the beer is surrounded in cherry flavor. Lots of great things going with this beer!

Forth Meal collaboration by The Bruery and Maine Beer Company

Forth Meal collaboration by The Bruery and Maine Beer Company is a 6.9% ABV Belgian Pale Ale

Label:
DO WHAT’S RIGHT…AT 1AM.
The Bruery and Maine Beer Company got together and cooked up something special for you: fourthmeal. It isnโ€™t brunch; it isnโ€™t โ€œlinner.โ€ Itโ€™s a hoppy Belgian-style ale that brings aspects of both breweries to the table: fruity, Belgian yeast esters, a crisp, bready backbone, citrus and piney hop characteristics, and a dry, hop-forward finish. Thereโ€™s no one shouting โ€œcome nโ€™ git itโ€ when itโ€™s time to dine – just mouth-watering, dry-hopped aromatics, signaling that itโ€™s time for fourthmeal.

==Introduction==

This one was sold and released by the Bruery to the public. While it will have a limited run, this is another collaboration. This time, they paired with Maine Beer Company and created a fused beer with specialties from both breweries in one. Typically with beers like these, Pale Ales or Belgian Pale Ales, I try to find some new things from them. I like to see if it will be something unique or something I have had before and in some cases, something that might not be pleasant. Regardless, many of the Bruery beers are still awesome so I am sure this one will not fall short of the expectations.

Aromas:
Honey, Floral, piney, herbal, citrus and grassy hops, bananas, clove spice, phenolic notes, , biscuit bread, vanilla, caramel hints, peppercorns, phenolic hints, tropical fruit of pineapple, passion fruit hints, green grapes, stone fruit apricot, cane sugar, tangerine hints and waffle cone notes.

Flavors:
Citrus, herbal, floral, piney, garlicky and grassy hops, Peppercorns, mild Belgian candi sugar, lemons, hibiscus flowers, biscuit bread, stone fruit apricot, cane sugar, tangerine hints, waffle cone, coriander spice, mild toffee notes, vanilla, tropical fruit of pineapple, passion fruit hints, green grapes, phenolic notes and hints of banana.

Aftertaste:
Finishes with hoppy notes, biscuit bread, peppercorns, honey and mild stone fruit. No alcohol in the taste, light to medium straw gold body, crisp, smooth and refreshing mouthfeel. While it was very good, I feel like it may not be too different from some of the awesome servings that the Bruery has done before. I think if you are willing to search to try it simply since it is a collaboration of the Bruery, it is worth a try.

Overall:
A very good Belgian golden beer. The hops are definitely the predominant part of this beer while the sweetness is mildly complex but balances out with the hops very well.

Anime Corner:
Fubuki from One Punch Man and Ruby Rose from RWBY were used in this pairing to go with eating in general. The fact that they call this a meal was what prompted me to find something with eating or mainly having the munchies. What else will people eat late at night? How bout cookies? So when I found this really cute artwork, I was compelled to use it. It fits well with the label and the colors but also represents the breweries as collaboration and eating food.

==Introduction==

Another awesome entry in the list of Firestone Anniversary beers. These beers have been very massive Cuvees mixing in several notable entries in their list of awesome beers. Usually a mix of more than 6 beers would go into one and trying to figure it out would be like a crazy strategy game. This year however, they only mixed in 4 brews. While still awesome, I wonder how taking a step back may improve the perception of the taste in this one. The brew will either be as complex as the others before it or it will be just as close as the fusion may have given rise to newer flavors. Only one way to find out.

Aromas:
Dark fruit raisins, figs, plums, dark cherries, currants blackberries, prunes, raspberries, rich marshmallows, chocolate smores, oatmeal cookies, oreo cookies and cream, Dark chocolate, milk chocolate, Belgian Chocolate, German Chocolate, Chocolate milk shake, Rocky Road Icecream, clove spice, grilled bananas, vanilla, bourbon, rich oak, toasted coconut, almond joy chocolate and flan.

Flavors:
Dark chocolate, milk chocolate, Belgian Chocolate, German Chocolate, Chocolate milk shake, clove spice, grilled bananas, vanilla bourbon, rich oak, toasted coconut, almond joy chocolate, rocky road ice cream, almonds, walnuts, hazelnut nectar, rich marshmallows, chocolate smores, oatmeal cookies, oreo cookies and cream, dark fruit raisins, figs, plums, dark cherries, currants blackberries, prunes, raspberries, piloncillo, dark candy sugar, rock candy, tres leches cake, flan, sweetened condensed milk, rye bread, molasses, anise, whiskey, brandy notes, chocolate cherry ice cream, dulce de leche caramel, toffee, fudge brownies, Irish cream coffee, port wine and capirotada raisin bread pudding.

Aftertaste:
Super complex aftertaste with rich flavors of Bourbon, brandy, maple syrup, rocky road ice cream, oatmeal and oreo cookies, rich dark fruits, oak, marshmallow smores, dark chocolate, banana cream pie and mild earthy hop notes. No alcohol in the taste, crimson pitch black body, silky smooth, creamy, velvety and slightly syrupy mouthfeel with an easy to moderate drinkability.

Overall:
Extremely exceptional! Even though they used only a composition of their best 4 beers, this turned out to be very complex still. While the craziness to dissect isnโ€™t as crazy as their other beers and to see what flavors came from what and so forth, this one expands on the bit of complexity each brings and well, goes insane. Doesnโ€™t make much sense right? But thatโ€™s essentially how I see it. Either each flavor is enhanced as it complements like flavors but also some flavors may have changed with the fusion. As a result, even at its coldest it will evolve to other flavors as it warms up. Just another delicious find you should look for.

Anime Corner:
Ruby Rose, Yang XiaoLong, Weisse Schnee and Blake Belladonna from RWBY were used in this pairing as I wanted to represent the 4 beers that were used to make up this beer, Parabola=Ruby, Stickee Monkee=Yang, Velvet Merkin=Weisse and Bravo=Blake. Ruby is Parabola as she is the leader of the bunch but also the name is like the shape of her scythe. Yang is the Stickee Monkee as she, like monks and shaolin monks alike, is versed in the inner strength and martial arts. Weisse is Velvet Merkin as she uses swords and magic to summon. Blake is Bravo like Brave and Courage as she is shy but can be very passionate about what she does. Altogether, make the team that is this beer,

Project #3 was brewed right after brewing my Belgian Quadruple which will not be ready for a couple more weeks. Technically, this is the second homebrew of mines that I review. The idea came from the need to brew something sweet while I waited for the Quad to be ready. My friend Oscar told me about how he liked cherry heffs and I remember seeing a recipe for it. As a twist from that original recipe, I decided to use Organic Black Cherry syrup instead of typical Cherry Juice. The name of the beer came from the need to think of something that would be cool and fit with Heffweizens and Black Cherries. Heff By Black Cherries is a pun at Death By Black Cherries as I actually fit the name based on the artwork I chose for it which I will elaborate further as I go along. For now, let’s see how Project#3 turned out. Cheers!

Aromas:
Coriander, clove spice, oranges, vanilla, caramel, hints of black cherry, peppercorn hints, fruity pebbles hints, peach hints and honey.

Flavors:
Banana, clove spice, Black cherry notes, coriander spice, dark fruit raisin hints, vanilla, caramel, honey hints, orange peel, citrus, peach hints, toffee, banana split hints, rock candy and Danish cream.

Aftertaste:
Leaves with a bit of a minor tart aftertaste from the black cherries. The orange, bananas, clove spice, honey and a bit of peach lingers along with the earthy hop bitterness. No alcohol in the taste, dark caramel gold body, crisp and refreshing mouth feel and easy to drink.

Overall:
A very good heffeweizen. I was more impressed the more I tried it. I think it started off pretty tart but as I went along and the beer got warmer, the flavors started to get more balanced where the German heffeweizen side started to take over and cut some of the tartness. As a result, with a clear palate, some of that banana melded really well with the cherries giving hints of like a banana split but super subtle. I would like to brew this one again for sure.

Anime Corner:
Ruby Rose from RWBY was used in this pairing to mainly to represent the Black Cherries of the beer. The name Heff By Black Cherries is a pun at Death By Black Cherries as since Ruby carries around a scythe, I thought it was perfect as she is the โ€œ Black Cherry Death that causes the Heff to be Heffedโ€. The pool below her represents the German yeast as well as the Banana and Clove spices that it brings and infuses with the Black Cherries. You can also say it is the banana split flavors that are brought at ya as Ruby swings her scythe to take out your palate with a slight bit of that cherry tartness. Rose petals represent the cherries swirling as the beer is surrounded in cherry flavor. Lots of great things going with this beer!

Oude Tart with Cherries by The Bruery is an 8.4% ABV World Class Flanders/Flemish Red Ale aged in oak barrels with Cherries.

Label:
Cherry, OH!

Pleasantly sour with hints of leather, dark fruit, and toasty oak from extended aging in oak barrels along with plump cherries.

Oude Tart with Cherries is best enjoyed fresh for the full fruit flavor, but may develop pleasantly over time.
___

Obtained this one as part of the Reserve Society membership. This variant of the Oude Tart adds cherries. I have done a review of the previous Oude Tart which I found very good. Now with the cherries, this may actually bring something awesome to the table. This beer is typical of the Flanders Red style which sometimes end up being like a sour beer but other times is mainly a tart fruit cherry beer. So without further a do, on with the review, cheers!

Aromas:
Caramel, rye bread, dark cherries, dark fruit raisins, plums, currants, raspberries, oak mustiness, lemon, leather, brown sugar, vanilla, funky wine grapes, tart cherry juice, sour apples, cherry pie, pecan pie hints, cinnamon, oak, hazelnut and cherry cheesecake notes.

Flavors:
Wine grapes, oak, dark cherry yogurt, dark cherries, dark fruit raisins, plums, brown sugar, oak, lemon peel, leather, tobacco, rye bread, hints of coconut, caramel, vanilla, toffee, red wine, cherry cobbler, pecan, cherry preserves on biscuit bread, vanilla cream hints, hints or tropical fruits like old mango, pineapple hints, cherry and strawberry cheesecake.

Aftertaste:
Ending with a dark cherry yogurt, caramel and vanilla sweetness with left over wine like acidity into like a cinnamon and fruity dry taste. No alcohol in the taste, medium to sipping drinkability, medium body and medium mouthfeel.

Overall:
Amazing! Way better than the original as it seems like the cherry sweetness cuts down the sour aspect and makes this one more tart and sweet. I am not sure how the cherry adds more complexity but it really does. The flavors seems to meld really nice creating some nice complexities. As it warms up, the sweeter aspects of the beer tend to come out and play on the palate. I wish they released variants out to the public as these beers would give more selections to the originals. Either way, really awesome beer.

Anime Corner:
Yang Xiao Long and her sister Ruby Rose from RWBY were used in this pairing since I used Yang in the last pairing.
