Damn it all! This is what I get for listening to pink haired broads trying to sell me some goods off the streets. When people used to tell me not to take candy from strangers, I should have listened. Heck, you too! How the hell else you get a hold of this damn cursed bottle. I was but a pawn to this girl’s seductions. Trying to sell me a bottle of some magical cherries and now, I am stuck here. Going on these dumbass, fucking space adventures.
I heed you warning though friend, do not make the same mistake I made. Drinking this will only summon that cherry choco cordial selling girl with no remorse and you will be a slave to this like I have. Don’t say I didn’t warn ya! Don’t drink this BEER!

==Introduction==

Project #29 was inspired by everything that is awesome! Beer, Anime, Video Games and anything that celebrates geekdom. For the longest time, I always wanted to make a beer similar to the Bruery and Three Floyds Collaboration: Rue D’Floyd. An Imperial Porter aged in bourbon barrels with Vanilla, Cherries and Coffee. Since the days of Project #6 Oblivixen’s “Sangri-Leche” Maelstrom, I knew I wanted to make return to that beer. A beer that took a lot of experimentation, effort and time to essentially become, my first attempt at barrel/oak aging a beer. It was such a damn hit that it paved way for some of my other oak aged brews which I was very fond of and so were many of my friends. The return of the Sangrileche, however, was going to be different. Essentially, as I pondered about beer and geeky stuff, I remember how awesome and geeky Stone’s W00tStout was.

When I had heard that Wil Wheaton was awesome enough to share the recipe, I thought awesome I wanna brew that beer too. Then I thought, wait a second, What if I borrow some ideas from that W00tStout recipe and create my own new recipe . Essentially, it would not be a Belgian Stout, but many of the Sangrileche elements would make a return. Not in the way I imagined but very damn close. Heck, I wanted to make a W00Stout/Rue D’Floyd hybrid. Since Sangrileche already carried the vanilla, cherries and coffee like it did with Rue D’Floyd, why not, pay tribute and make it similar to that using some W00tstout inspirations of Pecans in place of peanut butter and add more dark chocolate and some sweeter cherries. What really put the “Cherry” on this dessert was when I brought the unholy grail of the Bourbon Barrel Blood Lord Coffee into the mix. Dark Matter’s Coffee beans, Unicorn’s Blood Coffee (Which were also used in the original Sangri Leche) aged in bourbon barrels that had “Three Floyds – Dark Lord Imperial Stout”. Yes, this coffee had a limited run but it was worth it to create this madness of a beer that would soon be the second coming of BloodyMilk (SangriLeche). So with that and a special Maker’s Mark 46 Bourbon (Unfortunately I ran out of Dragon’s Milk Bourbon) which was referred to me by my friend Oscar, this beer was finally born.

W00h! That’s a mess, TL:DR. Essentially, it took me several months of aging but this beer made it just in time to bring it to the website and give my thoughts on my crazy creation. Why does it have so much game influences? Go Read or Listen to the “Ready Player One”, which is also narrated by, you guessed it, Wil MuddaFuckin’ Wheaton himself! Yes, that book has so many references to the 80’s and 90’s lore just like this beer has so much going on making it in my mind, one of the best video game beers and also one of the best home brews I have ever brewed to date. With that says, today marks my birthday so this is essentially a treat to myself and fans alike. Cheers and thank you for your support!!

Chocolate Cherry Cordials, Dark chocolate, earthy chocolate, Chocolate abuelita, Carlos V Mexican chocolate, oak, bourbon, vanilla, toffee, caramel, mocha coffee, dark fruit raisins, prunes, currants, blackberries, raspberries, pecan pie, flan, crème brulee, banana split sundae, rocky road ice cream, Khalua coffee notes, coconut hints, walnuts, Irish cream, chocolate cherry cake, milk sugar, chocolate port wine, Nutella chocolate, oatmeal cookies, anise, tobacco and leather.

Flavors:
Super Rich Dark Chocolate, Chocolate abuelita, Carlos V Mexican chocolate, earthy chocolate, almost like a mole spice, Milk chocolate, German Chocolate, Bakers Chocolate, Chocolate Mousse, Vanilla, Dulce de leche caramel, toffee, butterscotch, dark fruit raisins, currants, raspberries, blackberries, prunes, dark cherries, sweet cherries, port wine, Nutella chocolate, Chocolate Cherry Cordials, Banana split Sundae, whipped cream, marzipan, mazapan, pecan pie, hazelnut nectar, walnuts, prailines, rocky road ice cream, almond joy chocolate, toasted coconut hints, flan, sweetened condensed milk, cocoa krispies, Kahlua coffee Liqueur, Irish cream notes, Cherry Chocolate cake, Tres Leches/ Three Milks cake, mocha, roasted coffee notes, fancy coffee notes, oak, bourbon, molasses, mint chocolate chip hints, oreo cookies and cream, raisin bread pudding, lactose milk sugar and chocolate cookie dough.

Aftertaste:
Finishing with Chocolates for days, Nutella, dark chocolates, Mexican chocolate, dark cherries, vanilla, caramel, earthy chocolate, oak, bourbon hints, mocha, pecan pie and banana split cherry sundae. For being my strongest beer to date at 14%, you can’t really any of the alcohol. The body is fully pitch black and abysmal like the previous iteration of Sangrileche. The mouthfeel is very smooth, not as chewey as the original sangrileche but velvety and syrupy. A major sipper for sure, but this brew was made to be sipped and taken with ease.

Overall:
Ridiculous. Really fucking ridiculous, oh did I mention, fucking ridiculous! While it is not as sweet as the original Sangrileche, its still a dessert though. Not cloying and very out there. The majority of the beer is like drinking chocolate syrup like some of the best choco vanilla barrel aged beers out there. The cherries really start to play when the beer warms up and more of the dark fruit flavors start to come out. While the beer does not have much head retention, it is expected at such a high 14% ABV. Now, the real question is, did I really succeed in making the ultimate hybrid geek beer. The answer is Yes and No. Yes because the flavors are similar to those on the Bruery and Three Floyds and W00tstout combined with some Dark Lord Imperial Stout. The No part really has to do with the fact that it is not those beers, its my own creation. It is something new but at the same time, it is a geek beer. I poured so much effort and fan splurging as I can possibly think of into this. Geekdoms are made by fans and Geek inspired home brews are made by fans as well. So yeah, it is a fucking Geek Beer in its own damn righr. A crazy one at that. Even so, as crazy as some of my other beer recipes have been in the past, this one truly takes the cake. Yes, how appropriate, cake for my birthday. Cheers!

Anime Corner:
Haruko Haruhara from FLCL/Fooly Cooly and many video game characters were all chosen in this pairing because for being an insane and really out there beer, I needed to bring an anime character from one of the most beloved franchises who is all about rock and is a space psycho. You really have to think, how crazy this beer is with all its ingredients, colors, strength, retro name and geekiness. Yes, recipe base of W00tstout inspired darkness is the embodiment of pure Beer and Geeky media! While Krystal Fox from Star Fox was the original mascot for this beer, I paid tribute to her as you can see from the label. Yes, I could think of no one better.

Long ass description for a beer that has been sitting aging for more than 6 months in the dark recesses of another dimension. Yes, this beer comes from a realm of reality where the liquid itself transports your senses to an existence that not even the collapsed stars of the universe dare to peek their event horizons at. You said, “screw it, it’s just a beer” and after your first sip, now you entered the unknown dimension. There, you meet with the Foxy Vixen that helps you on your journey back home, but once you realize that you never sensed the alcohol in the first place since you were too busy indulging in the sweet Godly Ambrosia of a dessert this is. Well, it was clear as day that it was too late and in the darkness of unimaginable oblivion you remain. Don’t worry though, I am sure your next astral exploration across the quantum will be more successful. For now, just remember, a sip at a time and you’ll be fine.
 
Ingredients: Water, Malts, Dark Matter’s “Unicorn Blood Coffee”, Lactose Milk Sugar, Belgian Dark Candy Sugar, Cane Sugar, Peanut Butter, Organic Black Cherry syrup, Cocoa Nibs, Vanilla Beans, Oak Aged “Dragon’s Milk Beer Barrel Bourbon”, Monastery/Trappist yeast, RBY Monk’s yeast and Abbey Yeast.

Proeject# 6 One of the craziest things I have ever done in my life. Yes, a real mad science experiment of a beer. After brewing 5 different beers and learning the process of aging and higher gravity beers, I decided I take a huge gamble and create a beer that was along the lines of some of the best high gravity barrel aged beers I could ever find. Yes, I am talking about Black Tuesday, Dark Lord Imperial Stout, Creme Brulee, Like is Like…, Firestone Walker Parabola and even Thirteenth Hour Belgian Stout. I figured if I could make something like that, I would definitely learn so much more about brewing extravagant beers.
 
So why the name Sangri Leche and Maelstrom? Maelstrom since the beer is pretty scary as a storm that is a portal to another dimension. “Sangri-Leche” meaning Bloody Milk came as a tribute to using Unicorn Blood Coffee and Milk sugar as it is part milk stout as well. I started this project in April 2015 and aged the beer until today, Friday November 13, 2015. (Yes I made it so dramatic). So the day has finally come and after so much work of mashing, heating. Boiling, fermenting, pitching, siphoning, aging and bottling (Thanks to my friend William Carranza of El Borracho Hombrewing for helping me bottle the beer), I finally bring forth a beer that may actually be up there with some of the greats. I give you, my Frankenstein brew. Let’s take a look and analyze this monster, cheers!

Super Rich Black Cherry, Raspberry Chambord, Dark fruit raisins, prunes, cherries, plums, figs, Dark chocolate, Milk chocolate, Milk Shake, Rich Fudge Chocolate cake, port wine, bananas, clove spice, Hazelnut nectar, Walnuts, pecan pie, almond joy chocolate, toasted coconut hints, bourbon, oak, dulce de leche caramel, peanut butter, fancy coffee, roasted coffee, Mocha, Kahlua coffee Liqueur, flan, milk sugar and choco flan.
 
Flavors:

Aftertaste:
Lingering rich flavors
Despite the strong ABV, there is no alcohol in the taste. Dark Abyss Full Body from another dimension with a thin layer of bloody crimson, very damn smooth, creamy, velvety, syrupy, bloody and rich body and easy to drink although it should be a highly sipping beer.
 
Overall:
I really can’t believe I made this. I really can’t believe how exceptional and over the top this beer turned out to be. I have only few people who have tried it to thank for telling me how ridiculously special this beer was. In a way, I am extremely happy with the results. In another way I am sad that because I spent so many resources and time, I only have such a damn small batch of the beer to share with close people. I just hope maybe one day this beer can win a home brewing competition. The alcohol while high, is ridiculously masked by ridiculous complex flavors. It came out sweet and dessert like but it is still a super heavy hitter. That is why I feel it can really compete with the likes of even the most craziest of High gravity and coveted Whales. This monster is my baby and I am proud to have made this, my best beer ever! (At least until I can top it one day or make more!)
 
Anime Corner:
Krystal Fox from Star Fox was used in this pairing to represent the Vixen from the label description. She is only know as Oblivixen as it is a play at Oblivion (Unconscious or Unaware) and Vixen (female fox). The beer was so damn complex and dark like the vast infinite space and the vastness of the unknown that her being from Space or even another dimension made sense in my mind. Sweet on the outside she is, but deep in darkness and bloody she be. All good though, just remember this is only either a breakfast cup of coffee or a mind blowing dessert. All in all, it existence still baffles me. As the description says, you’ll be infinitely oblivious as you drink this. It will be all wort it.

Commercial Description:
L’deracola is a beer inspired by another favorite drink of ours that probably shouldn’t be such a favorite… cola! To create this unique beer we had to dive through the overwhelming layer of saccharine that dominates the flavor of most colas and discover the subtle flavors that create the world’s most popular soft drink. Around a dozen different spices were added to a dark malt base and it was finished off with a twist of lime for good measure. The resulting beer has all of the flavors of an ice cold cola, without the overwhelming sweetness. Delightfully refreshing on it’s own, but also ideal for a modern take on a classic style cocktail.

==Introduction==

The Cat’s Meow is out of the bag. Or in this case, the fox! I will tell you why later. This is the 2015 L’deracola presented to members of the Bruery’s societies especially the Preservation and Reserve as well as Hoarders. This has seen public release in bottles and even have growler fills of this at the brewery to the public, limited time only. So in their crazy experimentation, never would I have imagined that they would come up with beer that is so close to the flavors of Cola that it truly is one of the most unique beers I have ever seen. With great excitement, and a pleasure, it is with great craze that I bring forth, the “Cola Beer” here to the site and the first of its kind. Cheers!

Aromas:
Rich molasses, cola flavor, caramel, molasses, brown sugar, lime, caramel, toffee, biscuit bread, rye bread, dark fruit hints like cherries, raisin, peppercorn spice, molasses, mint, pecan pie hints, roasted malt, coffee notes, anise, margarita hints, flan hints, vanilla hints, cinnamon hints, rye coriander, oranges and other spices.

Flavors:
Unsweetened rich cola flavor, Brown sugar, lime, caramel, toffee, biscuit bread, rye bread, coriander spice, orange peel, dark fruit hints like cherries, raisin, peppercorn spice, molasses, mint, pecan pie hints, roasted malt, coffee notes, anise, margarita hints, flan hints, vanilla hints, cinnamon hints and hazelnut hints.

Aftertaste:
Dry coca-cola aftertaste, vanilla, caramel, citrus, lime, molasses, earthy notes, coriander, peppercorn and toffee. No alcohol in the taste, crisp, smooth and refreshing mouth feel, easy to drink despite the ABV and also a dark crimson brown body.

Overall:
A true testament to what they set out to do, make a beer taste like cola. Yes the sweetness is subdued but all the right spices that make cola are in this beer which is really crazy! The hardest part about reviewing this beer is trying to find all the intricacies of it. It really is not the most complex but just the fact that they got it right, a true Coca Cola beer, that is enough for perfection in my book. Many like this one, others might not like the spices used in this but yea if you are a cola fanatic, you have to try this one! Cheers!

Anime Corner:
Krystal Fox from Star Fox was used in this pairing as I wanted to pair her with a great Bruery beer and the colors were a perfect complement for this one. The whole cats meow is in reference to the excellence of it but also the cat’s pijamas. Not sure how to compare that to the beer and Krystal but she certainly does look cuddly and cute like those pin up girls they used to advertise with coca cola. Even though the colors seem more like RC Cola or even Pepsi Cola. Either way, This beer will make you feel like you are a cat and drinking a bottle of pure catnip. Cheers!

Black Hole Sun by Black Market brewing

Black Hole Sun by Black Market brewing is a 15% ABV Russian Imperial Stout.

Because of the gravitational pull of Black Hole Sun, no light can escape. This super high gravity Russian Imperial Stout is brewed with 100% barley and zero added sugar. Black Hole Sun will make a fine evening companion. Let it warm a bit to enjoy its entire magnitude of flavor complexities.

Black Hole Sun, just like the Sound Garden song. This beer is something I have been meaning to try for a very very long time and never had a chance to get it. I have to give a special thanks to my friend Julio for hooking me up with this special beer. Many of the Black Market beers I have tried have been pretty epic but just the 15% ABV is enough to realize, this ain’t a muddaF’ing game. This is serious business. Funny part, I did not even check the ABV until I started this review which I realized was very intense from the aromas. This was certainly starting to remind me of a “Dark” beer I had long ago that was also a Russian Imperial Stout… So let us check this one out and see what it is about. 

Aromas:
Rich Dark fruit, dark cherries, cherry cordial, soy sauce, plum sauce, yogurt like notes, oak, Kahlua, apples, molasses, chocolate cake, currants, raspberry notes, rye bread, brown sugar, pecan pie, flan hints, maple syrup, salted caramel, dulce de leche caramel, walnuts, hazelnut nectar, dark chocolate cake, pecan pie, spicy roasted coffee, smokey notes, graham cracker and marshmallow smores.

Flavors:
An intense explosion of dark chocolate, milk chocolate, cherry cordial, dark fruit plums, raspberries, currants, blackberries, molasses, pilloncillo sugar cone, maple syrup, molasses, plum sauce, soy sauce, dulce de leche caramel, toffee, salted caramel, hazelnut nectar, Kahlua hints, pecan pie, rye caramel, spicy roasted coffee, vanilla, oak, flan, cinnamon, graham cracker and marshmallow smores, bourbon notes, anise, tobacco, leather notes and Danish cream.

Aftertaste:
Dark fruit raisins, dark cherry, earthy notes, tobacco, dark cherries, molasses, dark and milk chocolate. The alcohol is very subtle despite the ABV, Pitch Black Body to a darkness that does not even exist, sipping drinkability and a thick and syrupy mouthfeel.

Overall:
Extremely Epic and definitely up close next to the Dark Lord Imperial Stout but not as sugary or fancy coffee epicness from the Unicorn’s Blood Coffee. It is almost like the base Dark Lord with no coffee and not as sugary but still very complex it is crazy. This beer plays off like if it was barrel aged with like flavor intensity but it is still just a Russian Imperial Stout. I think in mind and after reviewing this intense and awesome beer, I realized how close it was to Dark Lord RIS. Ofcourse, Dark Lord RIS is on another level, but this can still compete on the playing field as this is California’s own Black Market Brewing bringing this. I highly recommend getting this one or two. You definitely want to age this massive intensity.

Anime Corner:
Krystal Fox from Star Fox was the perfect cadet for this interplanetary mission to the Black Hole Sun. She has survived the suns of Immelmann (Hangar 24 reference) so even something like this should be a piece of cake. She pairs extremely well with the label colors, complex dark fruit flavors and space travel. The sweetness is represented in her cuteness but the fact that Krystal is a warrior of land and space just speaks of strength. Star Fox has seen some Black Hole travels in the past so exploring a beer like this and trying to figure out its complexity is just the beginning of that dark space in a glass.

2013 Barrel Roll No. 1 Immelmann by Hangar 24

2013 Barrel Roll No. 1 Immelmann by Hangar 24 is a 11.4% ABV Imperial Porter aged in Bourbon Barrels

Just as it takes consummate skill to perform the Immelmann maneuver in the air, it takes the choicest ingredients, patience and consummate skill to bring you our IMMELMANN, a Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Porter. This hand crafted beer is brewed with 2-Row, Munich, Cara-Munich, Chocolate and Dark Chocolate Malts, Oats and Cocoa Nibs, along with whole Vanilla Beans. Aged in Bourbon Barrels for six months and blended with twenty percent fresh Porter to produce enticing aromas of chocolate, coffee, tobacco, bourbon and sweet malt along with a complex pallet of dark roast chocolate, oak and maple followed by a subtle vanilla finish. This is an intense, yet refined flavor experience to be savored today or aged to be enjoyed at your leisure.

Do a Barrel Roll!! This was the first beer in Hangar 24’s Barrel Aged “Barrel Roll” program which was first released back in 2010. They released it again in 2013 and have decided to keep it California limited. I was lucky to barely get a bottle of this one to review. This one I got at Ramirez Liquor in Boyle Heights, one of the best rare treasure beer shops in Los Angeles since I first started looking for rare beers. It sold out within the first couple of hours of it being posted on the internet. If you are lucky to find this one and enjoy the barrel roll series, definitely pick this on up.

The flavors are of bourbon, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, pecan pie, caramel flan, dulce de leche, toasted coconut, vanilla, oak, mocha, molasses, brown sugar, rocky road ice cream, marshmallows, tobacco, almond joy chocolate, cherry notes and some smokey notes

The aftertaste is of rich chocolate, hazelnut, almonds, caramel and bourbon. This is a sipper and meant to be enjoyed. The alcohol is barely noticeable and does not interfere with the rich flavors.

Overall it exceeds expectations, mainly due to the rich chocolate, caramel, mocha and bourbon flavors. This does not seems like a porter but more like a stout or strong ale yet the porter flavors are there in some aspect as it is pretty freaking sweet (Both is flavor and awesomeness of course) It is close to Pugachev’s cobra but still missing some more richer flavors. Yet, still flies the beer treasure skies of space and beyond. Definitely do this barrel roll!!

As recommended by my friend Julio who once had it on tap about a year ago. Been looking high and low for this piece of treasure to finally be able to do a review. Time to suit up and lift off into the heights of amazing flavors. How will it do with the other great imperial stouts out there? 

Upon opening the bottle, the aromas are very good. Definitely on par with some of the greats, maybe even better! Rich bourbon, vanilla, oak, sweet milk and dark chocolate, brownie batter, coconut, banana, hazelnuts, dulce de leche, crème brulee, coffee, mocha, maple, hints of dark fruits like raisins, apples and smokey wood. The flavors are very amazing. Heat of Bourbon flavor but low booziness, vanilla, bananas, coconut, dulce de leche caramel, raisins, Kahlua coffee, rum and very rich chocolate almost to the side of Black Tuesday but more focus on bourbon than chocolate yet still very strong with the chocolate. There are also flavors of flan, licorice, molasses, chocolate cake, chocolate syrup and whiskey. This one is very very good. The flavors are very rich and the bourbon flavor is amazing. Not the booziness but the actual oakyness and vanilla of it. No Joke, this beer was definitely near the top. A must get if you somehow are lucky to find it. I had to look online for this one unfortunately. Now next time it is one tap, that I will have to see. But you also have to realize, this has been aging FOR 2 YEARS!! so the much fresher version may not provide the strength and complexity. So get one now and save the other for later. Go get this beer!!

Upon opening this beer, I knew something was quite different about this beer. This was in a good way of course. The hoppy fragrance is quite different adding like an exotic fruit character like a lychee, kumquat, dragon fruit or persimmon like aroma. Some of the grassy and pine notes are subtle and give way through some more tropical fruit flavors such as the grapefruit, mango, oranges, tangerines, caramel, cherries, and like a gummy bear sweetness. The Flavors are awesome. Starts off with typical west coast California grassy, piney and grapefruit hops followed by those exotic fruits like a persimmon, dragon fruit, lychee or kumquat. We also come a nice tangerine, orange, lemon, mango, papaya, pear, slight cherry, apple, herbs and spices. A very crisp and sweet Pale Ale. Refreshing as well. Definitely a summer type of beer with some very interesting flavors. A must try.
