Tropical Torpedo by Sierra Nevada is a 6.7% ABV India Pale Ale brewed with Amarillo, Mosaic, Citra, El Dorado and Comet Hops.

Inspired by the island life, we created an IPA completely disconnected from the mainland. We used our one-of-a-kind Hop Torpedo to deliver an intense rush of hop flavor and the lush aromas of mango, papaya, and passion fruit with every sip. Enjoy our tropical twist on the American IPA.

==Introduction==

It has been a long time since I brought a Sierra Nevada brew to the site. Many of them like the Celebration, Narwhal and their Ovila series are some of my favorites. When I saw they released a “tropical” version of their torpedo, I definitely wanted to bring it to the site. I have not tried torpedo in years and it will be interesting to see how using whole cone hop versions of these newer and modern hops will have affected the beer’s profile in terms of the aromas and flavors. Let’s have a look, cheers!

Aromas:
Lots of tropical fruit like mango, pineapple, kiwi, passion fruit, guava, stone fruit peaches, mild toasted coconut hints, floral, grassy, dank, grapefruit, pine and garlicky hops.

Flavors:
Floral, grassy, dank, grapefruit, pine and garlicky hops, biscuit bread, vanilla, tropical fruit kiwi, mango, papaya, passion fruit hints, pineapple notes, lemon peel, tangerine gummy hints, stone fruit apricot, peach, honey, citrus peel, candied orange, toffee, sourdough bready hints, crackers and grape hints.

Aftertaste:
Finishing dry with lots of dank garlicky and piney hops along with some tropical fruit hints. No alcohol in the taste. Honey golden clear body, smooth, crisp and refreshing mouthfeel and easy to drink.

Overall:
A pretty good IPA. It does not present the full rush of tropical punch as I have come to love from many IPAs but it sure is hinted. Better than the original torpedo for sure. I think the tropical aspects are represented better in the aromas than they are in the flavors. In the flavors, you definitely get danker west coast hop flavors than malty or tropical flavors. I would recommend giving this one a shot but there are better tropical beers out there.

Anime Corner:
Sona from League of Legends and Vocaloid Hatsune Miku look a lot alike so I used them for this pairing as they pair with the colors of the label mainly but also the theme of this being a tropical beer. Sitting at the beach on a summer’s day relaxing, that is what this beer is about.

Kellerweis by Sierra Nevada

Kellerweis by Sierra Nevada is a 4.8% ABV Hefeweizen

Kellerweis is one of the few American Hefeweizens made using the traditional Bavarian style of open fermentation. This difficult and labor-intensive technique adds uncommon depth and flavor complexity. Our hazy-golden hefeweizen is deeply flavorful, refreshing and perfect for a sunny day. To serve, pour two-thirds into a glass, swirl and pour the rest.

Long ago, they used to have it as a common beer near where I live until they decided to change things. I have seen this one in many other places and it is quite common. So I finally got around to getting this one to do a review.

Aromas are very nice. You get the really nice banana, clove spice and sweet biscuit bread you get with the Bavarian style, wheat, honey, coriander, orange, lemons, phenols and slight peppery notes

The flavors are of banana, clove spice, phenols, caramel, biscuit and doughy bread, floral hops, peppercorns, coriander, citrus, lemon and slight toffee notes.

The aftertaste is sweet and hop like bitter. This is pretty damn close to the good German heffs as they get. The best part, is that this is a common. So if you are a fan of heffs, especially German ones, definitely grab a six pack this is. Good stuff for sure.

Life and Limb series Rhizing Bines collaboration by Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada

Life and Limb series Rhizing Bines collaboration by Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada is an 8%ABV Double India Pale Ale with Bravo and #644 hops.

Rhizing Bines is a collaborative IPA using the best of both coasts: Carolina-grown red fife wheat and Dogfish Head’s continual-hopping from the East and Sierra Nevada’s estate-grown caramel malt and Torpedo dry-hopping from the west.

This is the second beer of the Life and Limb series I have the honor to try. The first collaboration I had was a dark ale. This one is an IPA. Upon opening this beers there was a nice honey rich and grassy hop fragrance. Some very slight breadiness, citrus, grapefruit, caramel and biscuit aromas. There are flavors of hop oil and honey. Reminds me of 120 min IPA but not as ABV strong or complex. Flavors of grapefruit, orange, coriander, lemon grass, grapes, caramel, maple, berries, slight flowers, some honey and toast bread flavor, somewhat of a barley wine note and butterscotch. Not the typical IPA. The flavor says it all. While still hoppy, it is not like a typical grassy IPA. It goes more along the lines of like an amber. There seems to be more malts in this. Not a bad thing in my opinion as I think this beer is delicious and refreshing. Just do not expect much of the bitterness or tropical flavors you would from an IPA or DIPA in this case. Still, worth getting as it is nice to taste those hops without the bitterness. Although bitterness is part of what hops are all about.

Ovila Abbey Quad with Plums collaboration between Sierra Nevada and the Monks of the New Clairvaux Monastery

Ovila Abbey Quad with Plums collaboration between Sierra Nevada and the Monks of the New Clairvaux Monastery is a 10.2%ABV Belgian Abbey Quad brewed with Sugar Plums.

Ovila Abbey Quad with plums is heady with aromas of caramel, rich malt, and dark fruit-balanced by the spiciness and delicate fruity notes of a traditional Belgian yeast. This beer features sugar plums grown on the grounds of the Abbey, and harvested by the monks in Vina. We hope you enjoy this collaboration ale.

Ahh just like my favorite style but with stronger dark fruits. The fragrances includes lots of sweet Plums, raisins, prunes, cherry, vanilla, candi sugar, dulce de leche caramel bread, capirotada, banana and pecans. The flavors are of plums, dulce de leche caramel, vanilla, bread, chocolate, raisins, plum sauce, prunes, cherries, bananas, candi sugars, Belgian yeast, capirotada with plums and raisins, molasses, clove and coriander spice, nutmeg, pecans and minor port wine. The after taste taste dry but plum fruity. The regular quad was more focused on the overall Trappist balance. While this is really nice and awesomely good, it still was more plum driven than the original Ovila quad. Not a bad thing at all but I enjoy the more caramel like Ovila quad. This is still pretty epic and up there with the dark fruit concentrated types. Belgian beer lovers get this one. Surely a must try and a must pick up again 😛

Bigfoot Ale by Sierra Nevada

Bigfoot Ale by Sierra Nevada is a 9.6% ABV Barleywine

Bigfoot is prized by beer collectors for its supreme cellarability. Under the proper conditions, it can age like a fine wine, developing new flavors and character as it matures in the bottle. Each new release or “expedition” is vintage dated. Collect your own and see the flavors develop and progress.

Barleywines are the type of beer styles that that range from bitter to bittersweet and are intense in terms of alcohol, hops and complex flavors. They can also be cellared to age like wine. This beer has avery nice grassy and pinecone hop aroma, with other fragrances of caramel, lemon peel, honey, pineapple and biscuit bread. The flavors are of the nice Sierra Nevada pine cone, grassy hops at mild bitterness, pineapple, raspberry, apples, caramel, toffee, powdered sugar, cinnamon, butter on toast biscuit bread and slight boozy feel. As I said, these beers get better with age. This is probably too early in its stage but it will probably get a lot better after a while.

Ovila Quad by Sierra Nevada

Ovila Quad by Sierra Nevada is a 10.4% ABV Quadruple Fermented Belgian Style ale. Sierra Neveda worked with the New Clairvaux Monastery in Vina California. The project as stated in the label was a touch for Sierra Nevada to get into the fermented ales but also for the proceeds to go to Santa Maria de Ovila chapter house within the New Clairvaux Abbey which was built from the SacredStones of Spanish Monastery in Trillo. The Stones were shipped to California where the monks of the Vina started to rebuild the Abbey by hand.

A collaboration between Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and the monks at the Abbey of New Clairvaux, Ovila Abbey Quad brings the centuries-old monastery brewing tradition to America. Ovila Abbey Quad is rich and complex with layers of flavor including notes of intense dark fruits, and caramel-like maltiness. Rich and complex, this ale should be shared among friends in the true spirit of the season. A portion of the proceeds from this ale goes toward the restoration of the historic Santa Maria de Ovila chapter house on the grounds of the Abbey of New Clairvaux. This medieval building stood for nearly eight centuries in Spain. William Randolph Hearst purchased the monastery in 1931 and planned to use the stones for a castle even grander than his famous San Simeon. Although Hearst’s plans crumbled, these historic stones will rise again in a California Cistercian abbey. So this beer is yet a fine example of great alcohol masking, dulce de leche caramel, dark fruit, bread beer as inspired by the Abbeys of Belgium. This beer has some sweet vanilla and banana pecan goodness that reminds me of the Weyerbacher Blasphemy but more lighter. While that beer is harder to find, I can find this easier. Raisins, plums, minor bread and wine aftertaste. I was skeptic about this new line of beers as many people have up and down feelings about Sierra Nevada. I tend not to judge though as they have been making decent beers for years. In fact, my gut feeling was right. Try a beer before you make the decision. This is really good. While at 10.4%ABV, the rich sweet flavors mask it way to well. Almost feels like it is easy drinking quite the smooth one at that. Be careful though, it will get you back. A Quad from Monks in California inspired by an Old Abbey that existed in Spain, this is so cool 😀
