Kvasir collaboration by Dogfish Head, Dr. Patrick McGovern and Swedish brewery Nynashamns Angbryggeri, is a 10% ABV Traditional Ancient Ale brewed with lingonberry, cranberry, birch syrup, honey, cranberry juice and herbs.

Label:
She was a leather-clad priestess, a member of the upper class, and in the most northerly limits of Scandinavia, her tomb guarded a recipe for millennia. In her day, before grape wine arrived from the Neu East, alcoholic beverages were cocktails of sugar-rich ingredients like grain, fruit and honey. With help from biomolecular archaeologist Dr. Patrick McGovern and Swedish brewery Nynashamns Angbryggeri, we’ve unearthed the secrets of her tart, complex grog, and we’re sharing our modern interpretation with you.

The next beer in the Ancient Ale series of Dogfish Head, Kvasir brings forth rich berry flavors according to the bottle description. The Ancient ales have been a hit or a miss in terms of complexity and deliciousness, although to me they have all been very fantastic. I was able to grab this beer from Ramirez Liquor store in Boyle Heights California.

Aromas:
Honey, Raspberries, cherries, cranberries, wine grapes, chamomile hints, herbs, raisins, almonds, strawberry preserves, toasted rye notes, biscuit bread, caramel, toffee, flowers and oak.

Flavors:
Tart cranberries, bit of funky grape, rich strawberry and raspberry preserves on toasted biscuit bread, raisins, rye, cherries, honey, chamomile hints, rye bread, flowery hops, mild earthy hop notes, rich trail mix and nice oak.

Aftertaste:
Lots of berries in the aftertaste but start finishing tart but with some bready and earhy notes. Moderate to sipping drinkability. No alcohol in the taste either.

Overall:
Not as awesome as the Forte, but damn loving it none the less. Lots of berries are good in this one and with the right caramel and rye bready goodness, you really can’t go wrong if you love sweet but tart and fruit beers

Anime Corner:
Samus Aran from the Metroid series was used in this piece to express several different things. First you have the red and blue colors of the label as well as lady Kvasir who is blonde and magical. Since I first thought of Kvasir the God in Mythology, I made Samus look like a God in a Giant Varia suit patrolling the Universe for vanquishing evil with delicious flavors of berries. That and the fact that this version of the varia suit is actually the gravity suit and is purple like the berries in this beer, I kind of stretched my imagination on this one. What other things do you see in this pairing?
