==Introduction==

This is the first time I tried a bottled beer from Angel City here in Los Angeles. I have tried a lot of their other stuff on tap but to be honest, even for being part of my home town, I feel that they are still in the early stages of being as delicious as some of the other beers out there I have tried. I usually try pretty unique stuff or even great things I have heard about but when I first saw this beer, I think it finally hit me. I have to do a review on this one and see how true to it’s flavors is this. Essentially, they have done other beers like an Avocado IPA which I have yet to try but also it has not been bottled so I guess until I see something more unique from Angel City, I will bring it forth. This is great start as beer geek aside, I really like some delicious Micheladas, yes the Mexican side of me speaking. Cheers!

Aromas:
Clamato, lime, lemon, salt, Sriracha, pickled yellow peppers, peppercorn, avocado hints, soy sauce hints, Worcestershire sauce, Michelada flavors, pickled eggs, pickles, spicy tomato juice, oysters, clams, dank hop hints, celery, bloody Mary and agave hints.

Flavors:
Rich Sriracha, pickled yellow peppers, agave syrup, avocado hints, soy sauce hints, Worcestershire sauce, peppercorn, lemon, salt, Michelada, pickles, jalapeño, spicy tomato juice, oysters, clams, biscuit bread, avave hints, bloody Mary, celery, pickled egg hints, cayanne pepper, lemon zest, citrus, garlic, oniony and some dank hop notes.

Aftertaste:
Heat from the peppers and Sriracha linger but the flavors of the salt, lemon, Worcestershire and Clamato tomato juice linger for a bit. No alcohol in the taste, spicy, crisp and refreshing mouthfeel, Redish Gold medium body and a easy to moderate drinkability depending on your heat tolerance

Overall:
Hot damn! This is spicy stuff. The main reason I give this one a good grade is not for being complex but really for putting the true flavors of the ingredients forward. If you don’t like spicy chile beers, Sriracha or Micheladas, don’t get it, but if you are one who loves his Sriracha and lots of spicy beers, this is a must try! Yes, I will admit, this is way more different than what I have had from the tap stuff. I think I will reexamine Angel city to see how their bottling line is in comparison to their tap, that is, if there is something really amazing or sounds like wise.

Anime Corner:
Ranma-Saotome from Ranma ½ was used in this pairing mainly since she has an awesome tomato hair color but also the colors she wears compliments the flavors of the beer like the lime, peppers, and agave syrup. Micheladas are mainly red as the Clamato tomato juice actually has a higher consistency than the rest of the ingredients, even if this beer is only slightly red.

La ManzArcángel Chapter 2: Mālum Ex Machina by Nubis Sanctum Ales is a 13% ABV Belgian Trappist Honey Crisp Apple Cider made with Organic Blue Agave Syrup and Mexican Cane Sugar.

Project#8 is the return of my original recipe for the Belgian Cider made with Blue Agave Syrup and Trappist Yeast but using Honey Crisp Apple Cider and Mexican Cane Sugar/ Azucar Morena. The idea for the name came from the original Holy Cider theme that I was going with and in essence since I was going to use the left over Trappist yeast cake that I had left from the Blinding Lunar Currants Cider. In essence, the second chapter is a play at the word for Apple and Evil and Latin ‘Mālum’. Yes, it seems there is dual meaning here. Although, this cider is supposed to be Holy, it should be more Godly than anything but can a God be pure? Well, It’s like comparing apples and oranges so lets find out. Cheers!

Aromas:
Sour Apples, peppercorn, citrus, honey, brown sugar, grape hints, dark fruit hints, Belgian phenolic notes, vanilla, dulce de leche, cherry notes, and piloncillo.

Flavors:
Tart Sour apple notes, grape hints, apples, pears, agave hints, strawberry notes, rich citrus, orange notes, lemon peel, brown sugar, cane sugar, banana hints, clove hints, pineapple hints, Stone fruit peaches, apricot hints, peppercorn, floral notes, vanilla, dulce de leche caramel, cinnamon, toffee, pilocillo hints, toffee, pecan pie hints and plantains.

Aftertaste:
Tart and sweet finish, sugary apple remnants, banana notes, clove spices, honey, vanilla, pears. Chardonay hints, clove spice, hazelnut, berries and brown sugar. Slight boozyness in the taste but not as much as the original, Gold and brown Hazy body, sipping drinkability and a slight crisp and creamy mouthfeel.

Overall:
A slight mark above the original as the booziness has become more subtle but the complexity of it takes another direction from what the original did. It seems like it is more in the sweet yet tart taste which is most likely from the use of the yeast cake and the fact that there was some hints of the Black Currant cider in the yeast cake as well. All and all, it was mainly as way to see how the yeast cake can flourish even after the initial cider has completed. I think what I will do for next time is ferment the regular cider and then use the yeast for another cider but then any additives will be in the secondary. Either way, I really love how this one came and and definite on the honey and banana citrus edge.

Lightning Claire Farron, from the Final Fantasy XIII series was chosen in this pairing to go with the Belgian Cider as I wanted to use something that had to do with something Holy as it is a Belgian Monk themed cider and similarly, I wanted to do something like the saint. The Spanish name was give as it uses the Agave Syrup as I mentioned before. For lightning, she became a messenger of God, a holy knight of God in the series. Lightning returns in Chapter 2 holding the very power of God from the apples. She is not quite evil (which could be said something about the tartness about the taste) but because she is closer to God, she has no human emotions as she remains neutral. The strength of the cider to be something above of what it used be could be seen Godly. Thankfully, this cider is not evil and it is deliciously and holy goodness.

La ManzArcángel by Nubis Sanctum Ales is a 13% ABV Belgian Trappist Cider made with Organic Agave Syrup and Brown Cane Sugar.

Project # 4 was my first attempt at creating a cider using 100% Apple Cider, Organic Agave Syrup, Brown Cane sugar and Trappist yeast. The name derives from a combination of the word Manzana for Apples in Spanish and Arcángel. Basically the Apple Archangel. The original idea came from trying to replicate Crispin’s The Saint which is made similarly but with maple syrup. While I could not get the recipe exactly, I decided to make my own by using Organic Agave syrup. There were the results so let us see where my crazy experiment went.

Aromas:
Apples, honey, brown sugar, phenolic notes, vanilla hints, dulce de leche caramel hints, mild cherry notes and grapes.

Flavors:
Dark fruit hints plum, peaches, grape hints, apples, pears, strawberry, cherry hints, brown sugar, cane sugar, agave hints, banana hints, clove hints, pineapple, citrus, Stone fruit peach and apricot hints, peppercorn, floral notes, vanilla, cinnamon, dulce de leche caramel hints, toffee and pecan pie hints.

Aftertaste:
Slight dry finish with good sugary apple remnants, pears, berries, banana, clove spice hints, caramel, vanilla and chardonay. Slight boozyness in the taste, Gold Hazy body, sipping drinkability and a slight crisp and creamy mouthfeel.


Overall:
While I found this one very good, I still couldn’t help that the yeast pretty much ate the majority of the sugar but because it was this Belgian liquid yeast, it did not leave it dry. The problem I realize was that I had used a high gravity Trappist yeast instead of a low gravity one making this reach the 13% ABV mark. I felt it was pretty high for a cider and was concerned about the product being too boozy. However, after trying it when it was carbonated, it came out just fine. The weeks it took to bottle conditioned mellowed out the alcohol and really let some of the cider play well with the ingredients. This cider can use some aging for sure to see where it will be at several years later. For now, I was pretty impressed with the results either way and hope the next cider project becomes awesome.

The fact that I found an artwork where she is holding what appears to be an apple as well as the fact that she has the angel wings and is close to God, well, it couldn’t get any closer to exactly what I was looking for in this pairing. The fact that it became 13% ABV and the fact that she became just as powerful as God in the series, it represented the strength of the cider and well really well.

2014 Roble Blanco by The Bruery is a 15% ABV Wheat Wine/Sour Ale Aged in Tequila Barrels with Lime Juice, Lime Zest and Salt.

Obtained as part of the Reserve Society membership, this beer was released as one of the mystery beers that was on the list for October. This beer is essentially a sour wheat ale that was aged in tequila to try and mimic the flavors of a margarita. I don’t know what to expect from this one. My only hope is that it is not too sweet or too sour but just right. I tend to gear more toward a balance when it comes to sours.

Aromas:
Lime candy, Bananas, plantains, Honey comb, sangria, mezal, tequila, oak, dulce de leche caramel, agave syrup, white raisins, honey dew melon, margarita, salt, grapefruit, coriander, orange, cinnamon hints, white wine, musty notes, leather and pecans.

Flavors:
Plantain, tequila, salt, agave syrup, white raisins, plums, apricot, margarita, lime candy, lime peel, rye, orange, grapefruit, blonde roasted barley, wheat grains, biscuit bread, sangria, mezcal, tejuino, bananas, oak, vanilla, dulde de leche caramel, honey, white wine, musty notes, raspberry skins, currants skints, dragon fruit peels, honey dew melon, cucumbers, mild coconut hints, leather notes, Danish pastry hints, capirotada raisin bread pudding, pecans, almonds, leche nestle condensed sweetened milk hints and apples.

Aftertaste:
Caramel, Lemon, Salt, Margarita, oak, honey comb, agave, tejuino and tequila finish. No alcohol in the taste, medium gold body, syrupy mouthfeel yet smooth and very drinkable for some damn reason making this one very dangerous drinking in one sitting.

Overall:
Such a damn resemblance to the salty lime tequila margarita it ain’t even funny. You really have to like that drink in order to understand how this one works. However, the only thing is that it is not overly sweet and the salt and lime clash for the balance to salty, sweet and sour. This cause the beer to be more balanced than a true sour. I had to stop drinking this for a while because it was way to damn drinkable for my own good and it was so delicious. Also that part of me that loves lemon and salt kicked into high gear so I may sound bias in my review but this one one hit certain sectors of flavors that were really awesome. I highly recommend it if you can find this one and you really like tequila, lime, salt and a ton of complexity.

Anime Corner:
Annet Myer/Futatabi from El Viento series was used in this pairing to go with the colors of the label but also the name as the work Roble means strong but also the act of aging which coincide with oak and tequila barrels. The rustling of lime trees to the wind or El Viento also link to the beer but also Annet herself since she has the colors of a margarita, she is the Roble Blanco or strong White and she is from Peru meaning Latina. She may not be Mexican, but she is bad ass and her magic abilities (Complex flavors) and strength (ABV) as well as the fact that she is fast as El Viento/TheWind (Smoothness) is enough to mess you up if you dare take her on!

Agave Maria by The Lost Abbey

Agave Maria by The Lost Abbey is a 13.5% ABV American Strong Ale brewed with Agave syrup and aged in Tequila barrels.

Label:
It was an oppressively hellish day in dusty Jalisco when I first encountered Margarita Mary. The locals preferred a more sacred name and simply called her Agave Maria. Painted on a courtyard mural over a century ago. Maria stood like a mother watching over her children protecting them as their divine inspiration.

She blessed every child birth in the village and acted as the refuge during feverish outbreak that threatened the workers. But most importantly each and every day employees dropped to their knees in prayer asking her to provide safety to the jimadors in the fields and the distilleries in the factory. Maria was simply everything to everyone.

All of the agave piñas harvested from the fields passed beneath her outstretched arms as if she was bearing witness to the liquid they would weep while the candles at her feet flickered, never being allowed to extinguish. Because we love the spirit she blesses so very much, we have released this beer in her honor. We hope that you too will find some room in your life for Agave Maria.

A seasonal by the Lost Abbey and I am sure I would gladly pick up more as I go. I was pretty surprised that the Lost Abbey decided to use the virgin Mary for their label. While none of it seems to be pocking fun at religion, I am sure there maybe the conservatives that may see this as blasphemous. I am a Catholic and I for one like what they have to say about this beer as it is made to honor her name, even if the name is a little different but her not is not said in vain and that is what is important. Aside from that, this beer as Tequila Barrel aged so just the thought of trying a Tequila barrel aged beer made by the Lost Abbey especially, there was no way I wouldn’t try this.

Aromas:
Wow! It smells like Mezcal, tequila, agave nectar and rich dark fruit raisins, brown sugar, dulce de leche caramel and more. It also has oak notes, pepper, plums, bananas, candi sugar, pan dulce, capirotada, walnuts, pecans, plantains, dark chocolate, flan, crème brulee, coconut, sangria, prunes, marshmallows and toffee. Lot’s going on here.

Flavors:
Very rich agave nectar, mezcal, sangria, dark fruits like raisins, plums, bananas, dulce de leche caramel, capirotada raisins bread pudding, pepper, oak, tequila, flan, cinnamon, chocolate covered plantains, leche nestle condenced sweetend milk, coconut, rich vanilla, molasses, grape jelly on rye toast, currrants, cherries, chocolate cake, marshmallow, rocky road ice cream notes,wine notes, toffee, leather notes, molasses, anise, prunes and honey.

Aftertaste:
Lingering Tequila, mezcal sangria, raisins, dulce de leche caramel, toffee, bananas, . While the may seem slightly present, it does not detract from the taste nor is it harsh. A sipping yet very smooth beer. Full mouth feel but syrupy in a way as well.

Overall:
No denying it, the best Tequila barrel aged beer I have ever had and that’s a lot since there is hardly many Tequila barrel aged beers out there and of the few I have had this one, is damn amazing. Right next to the Barley wine they made (Sede Vacante), this is the next best one. So much going on here. It is almost like a Belgian quad meets Mexican tequila barrels and creates a truly heavenly beer. I am glad they are releasing this more often as many will want to try it and I am sure many will definitely be intrigued. Go get this bottle of holy!

Anime Corner:
What goes good with Agave Maria? Well, I wanted to keep this pairing very special but also wanted to be awe inspiring and artistic so I paired with it with Mary/Madonna and Child by ninebreaker of deviantart.com. Sure it may note be all the way anime, but some artistic aspects of this piece are both honoring and anime. It pairs very well with the colors of the label but also the story in the label advising about how Maria took care of her children. This is one pairing I definitely loved. Let me know what you think.
