2016 Ban-Anna’s Love Diablita De Leche Nectar by Nubis Sanctum Ales is a 10% ABV Doppel Weizenbock brewed with Bananas and Goat Milk Dulce De leche Caramel aged in White Grape Wine.
My homebrew from last year now 1 year and 5 months old has developed some very nice flavors! The banana is hardly there but the dark fruit and caramel shine massively. It also has some very nice gamey taste from the goat milk. Definitely even more unique than when I first had it. Still one of my best creations.

In the 1600s, Franciscan monks created the world’s first doppelbock. In 2008, Patrick Rue established The Bruery. The best of both worlds come together in this rich, malty lager,

It’s quite common for breweries to have “-ator” in the suffix of their doppelbock names. But ours has something theirs does not: A Rue in the prefix (and in the name of our brewery). Rueminator builds on the liquid bread legacy of the doppelbock style and gives it extra fortitude in the traditional fashion of The Bruery. This rich, hearty, smooth lager gains even more depth and character from extensive aging in charred new American oak barrels.

Released back in September to Reserve and Hoarders Society, it was only recently that I was able to get this one due to me forgetting that I had purchased one of these back then. For a 10% malty German lager, you know it would still stand the test of time. Even for a couple of months. Not to mention, the majority of the Bruery beers age well. So this awesome one would be no different. Now they had made an awesome Weizen bock but not necessarily a doppelbock. These are some of my favorite German beer styles along with the Dunkelweizens, Eisbocks and triple bocks. Regardless, since they are starting to do more German styles, I wish I should have attended their Oktoberfest, maybe next year. Anyways, let’s see if this is a beer worth getting, cheers!

Rich Dulce de leche caramel, toffee, butterscotch, vanilla, crème brulee, flan, piloncillo sugar cone, dark fruit prunes, plums, raisins, figs, bananas, clove spice, rye bread, oak, marshmallow smores, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, German Chocolate, brown sugar, hazelnut, pecan pie, molasses, trail mix, candied yams, biscuit bread, dark cherries, blackberry preserves, malty wheat bread, stone fruit peaches, honey, mild coconut, apples, dark candy sugar, raisin bread pudding, maple syrup and mild coffee notes.
Finishing with rich caramels, dark fruits, earthy notes, oak, marshmallow smores, molasses, bread pudding and flan hints. No alcohol in the taste. Dark crimson medium body, smooth, chewy and velvety mouthfeel with a sipping drinkability.

A very exceptional doppelbock. I find it very interesting that the Bruery beers are always like “in your face” type of beers. This is awesome since some styles do get amped up to another level. Especially when oak barrel aging. What that process did for this beer is simply amazing. So much complex flavors for a basic German Dark Lager. An Imperial lager at that. With that being said, it was definitely awesome and as close to the deliciousness of some of the best doppelbocks I have ever had. I highly recommend this one.
Anime Corner:
Gadget Hackwrench and the Rescue Rangers were used in this pairing mainly for the label colors but I wanted a reason to use her and the team for a Bruery beer. Especially since I have not used her or the others in much of any beers. Also, using the suffix –nator that goes with doppelbocks, I decided to go with a pic that represents her as being similar to the Terminator. Since, well, you know, if she ever went mad and tried to take over the world with robots. I don’t know, I just thought it was creative. I think the use of the specific pairings might be a stretch, but they do look bad ass regardless.

“They Say The Devil’s water it ain’t so sweet”…

Whoever said this has never tried it to begin with. Everyone has a sinful pleasure but none have ever made it a mission …

Until Anna came to bring these inner desires to manifestation the day she met with a mysterious woman who gave her a magic potion.

Since that time, Anna has had the magic touch. A simple drop or a touch from her would bring people’s most inner desires out. However, the more Anna shared, the more of her inner devil started to manifest.  She was a kind hearted devil though. Unlike the tales told.

Myth would have you believe that the root of all desserts stemmed from this very potion. Some say that what Anna drank was actually this ‘devil’s water’. Whether the mysterious lady from that day was an Angel or a Devil, the potion is enough to turn the holiest of man into a sinner.

Ingredients: Water, Malts, Hops, Bananas, Vanilla, Coronado Dulce de Leche Cajeta Caramel aged in White Grape Wine and Yeast.

Project #17 pays tribute to my need of making a beer similar to the Bananas Foster’s beer from Buffalo Bayou which was given to me a couple months ago by my friend Aaron Mendiola of I had always wanted to make a Weizenbock for a long time ago since the style pays tribute to the Doppel Bocks and Dunkelweizens which are some of my favorite styles from Germany. Lucky for me, the Bananas Foster was a Weizenbock. Hence where I got a crazy idea of making something similar but taking my own experimentation into consideration. Essentially, I wanted to implement Coronado Dulce De Leche Cajeta de Cabra into the mix. It is a Mexican Dulce de Leche with Caramel which was aged in White Grape Wine or what they call, Envinado. Also, since I wanted to make a beer that would go well into a beer float. The more the better to make a delicious style such as this. I don’t think the implementation of Goat Milk Caramel has ever been done in a beer so it was definitely a chance to make something unique and special. Aside from the base weizenbock extract recipe I researched, I added a lot of Crystal 40 malts which made my partial mash even bigger. With all the ingredients in place I had something very special to work with. So after a long time, basically 10 weeks of waiting and racking done, here is the brew! Cheers!

No alcohol in the taste, Crimson Blood and Dark medium Body, smooth, creamy, syrupy and chewy mouthfeel along with moderate drinkability.
Yet another crazy experiment done successful. This came out to be such a very delicious brew that it truly is orgasmic! I was concerned about this project big time since I got some sediment left over since there was so much banana in the brew (About 25 bananas!!) When it came to the caramel, I was concerned about how to add it to the brew in secondary since caramel the caramel is made with Goat’s milk and you could really smell it when I boiled the caramel with water. I stuck to my guns and said fuck it, all in the name of good beer and experimentation. I am so thankful that the people that have tried it so far have really liked it and even though it was a one off batch of brew, I definitely would like to make this again and proceed with other experiments as well. Hope to some day make enough for some beer enthusiasts like yourself to try some day. Cheers!
Anime Corner: (tl;dr)
Anna Nishikinomiya from Shimoneta, Asmodeus and Astaroth from Shinrabansho were used in this beer for many many reasons. During the research to make this beer, my friend Steven Blackburn from Iowa and I joked about the scene in Shimoneta where the girl Anna infused her “love nectar” into her cookies. So we basically discussed, if this beer is to be a true dessert, it has to be so damn good like a true nectar of gods. A beer that will basically make you orgasm since it would be so rich and ddelicious Essentially, all the sweetness from the bananas and caramel would become love nectar. The fact that I combined Anna on the label with Asmodeus is a play at the beer style, a DoppelWeizenbock or Double Buck/Goat Wheat beer. It is almost like a duality, Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hide kind of thing. Also, since goats have been used in some cultures to represent devils, I think it was fitting to put both Asmodeus and Astaroth on the label as well. This and the back that I literally used a Goat’s milk caramel into the beer, just adds to how much more the ingredients paired so well with the Weizenbock. The Doppel aspect also notes the fact that the beer is a stronger or Double/Imperial beer at 10%. In this beer, the Banana aspect, you can see Anna’s name is in Banana, and the whole Diablita de Leche is a play on the words Devil’s Milk. So you can see how I related Goat and Devil there. So then the whole thing with Astaroh and Asmodeus together is the Doppel Bock. Also, Since the grain bag burned a tiny bit at the bottom, the bitter earthiness of the brew can be seen as the burning of hell fire. Oh and Anna becomes Asmodeus after too much Love Nectar. Hope I covered everything.

Before-After by Rinkuškiai brewery of Lithuania is a 12% ABV Triple Bock.

Brewery Rinkuškiai was established in the year 1991 in Biržai region known as Beer Country in Lithuania. Rinkuškiai beer quality is the result of old traditions of Beer Country, experience of te past generations, and innovations of the modern days. That makes Rinkuškiai beer on of the most exclusive in Luthania. This beer is naturally fermented.


I obtained this one at Total Wine and More. When I first saw it I didn’t think much of it but when I saw it again when I went with my friend Will last year, I had to get it. As it turned out, it was a very good and boozy beer. It was not like strong boozy but the sweet flavors provided that it was a strong beer and complexity convinced me to bring it to the website. Hence, I went for another. I have never tried anything from this brewery in Europe. They have other beers I have seen which I might take a look as I did enjoy this one. Onward to the review!

Rich toffee, caramel, honey, tropical and stone fruit hints like peaches, mango, passion fruit, citrus, oranges, banana, clove spice, dark fruit hints of grapes, raisins, figs, pilsner malts, rye bread, vanilla and brown sugar.

Honey, malty, rich caramel, toffee, biscuit bread, dark fruit raisins, dates, figs, pilsner malt, hazelnut, rye bread, bananas, clove spice, grapes, orange citrus, tropical notes of passion fruit, dragon fruit, cherries, oranges, candied apples, stone fruit peaches, mango hints, cinnamon, fruit cake, toasted rye bread with tangerine preserves.

Finishes really malty with caramel, dark fruit, hints of stone fruit, tropical fruit and rich caramel. Slight booziness in the taste. Golden light body, syrupy, vinous and creamy mouthfeel with a sipping drinkability.

A very good beer! I think the fact that the sweetness does come from the caramelized alcohol is the best part. Some people will not like this simply since the beer is sweet and boozy but those that like that kind of stuff should give this a shot. They don’t make great tasting beers with high alcohol levels at cheap prices. They usually make strong nasty stuff for cheap but this is well made.

Anime Corner:
Fujiwara No Mokou and Onozuka Komachi from Touhou Project were used in this project as I wanted to pair something with the label that shows both sides. The before and after, the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the Ying and Yang… you get the picture. Essentially something that would pair with the label. I think the meaning of the label is to say, after a few of these, people will look different or you yourself will look different. A pun at getting wasted. Crazy potions!

Obtained this one through my local shop. When I first saw this I remembered about how Shmaltz used to have their Coney Island Lager brand. They once made a Barrel Aged Bourbon Bock which was called Barrel Aged Block Head. So yeah, you see how this reminded me of that special lager I reviewed back in 2012. I was definitely excited to bring this one here for a review as I wanted to see if this entice what I used to try when they had their lager series. So bottoms up with this one and cheers!

Rich dark fruits like cherries, raspberries, raisins, prunes, sweetened condensed milk, Bourbon, Caramel, vanilla, oak, marshmallow smores, bourbon notes, rye bread, flan, cocada Mexican coconut candy, maple syrup, pecan pie, hazelnut nectar, brown sugar and mocha hints.

Bourbon, toasted coconut, caramel, flan, dark fruit cherries, raspberries, raisins, prunes, sweetened condensed milk, oak, marshmallow smores, leather, tobacco hints, brown sugar, cocada Mexican coconut candy, maple syrup, pecan pie, hazelnut nectar, mocha coffee hints, butterscotch, toffee, almond joy chocolate, red apples, cinnamon, apple pie crust, toasted rye bread, Marzipan with almond fillings, Stone fruit peaches and apricot preserves.

Lots of caramel, toasted coconut, vanilla, toffee, dark fruit hints, marshmallow, dulce de leche, sweetened condensed milk and marzipan notes leave along with nice bourbon notes. Slightly boozy heat coming from the bourbon. Most likely as this beer can use some aging. Crimson Brown Clear body, Smooth, silky, mouthfeel, and moderate to sipping drinkability.

An Exceptional bourbon barrel aged beer. It definitely did remind me of the Bourbon Barrel Aged Block head but definitely more alcohol heat. The bourbon heat is forward while colder and mellows out as you sip this one through. After a long time of drinking this one, it finally hit that level I was looking for from the past. I really will say, there are not enough Barrel Aged Bocks out there but for the ones that do exist, they are supreme and as such, highly recommended like this one.

Anime Corner:
Ashe and Vent from Megaman ZX Advent were used in this pairing since I wanted to get the whole aspect of the 2 chicks or chickens. Similarly in colors and representing the flavors of the ingredients used in this beer, both Ashe and Vent trend the similar attire. I also threw that sweet dulce de leche caramel confrontation like it shows similarly in the label. The passion of caramel and rich flavors.


Raspberry Trippelbock by Mikkeller

Raspberry Trippelbock by Mikkeller is a 13%ABV Eisbock/Trippelbock brewed with Raspberries.


Commercial Description:
Mikkeller’s Raspberry Trippelbock is a huge strong ale brewed with raspberries to add a bit of tartness to the sweet profile of the bock style.


Love me some raspberries and to see a raspberry beer with a cute label was kind of the reason why I got this one. I don’t often review Mikkeller beers as they are pretty pricey but they are damn epic some times. I also Doppelbocks so the fact that what we have here a Trippelbock, well, that pretty much says everything about why I wanted to bring this beer to the site. This beer is available in many places that sells Mikkeller beers especially some of the online shops. Though a little bottle, 13% ABV is quite a lot! Cheers!

Extremely rich dark fruits of raspberry sweet and tartness, raisins, plums, blueberries, wild berries, blue berries, black berries, pomegranate, Black Cherry tartness, strawberry short cake, rich honey, raspberry yogurt, toasted rye bread with raspberry marmalade preserves, strawberries, kiwis, raspberry jelly doughnuts, dark chocolate, chocolate mousee, bananas, clove spice, raspberry cheesecake, brown sugar, stone fruit apricots, peaches, tobacco, leather, anise, molasses, dulce de leche caramel, vanilla, rock candy, candi sugar and crème brulee.

Tart raspberry marmalade, rich complexity of stone and dark fruits, bananas, chocolate notes, tobacco, dulce de leche caramel and candi sugar. No alcohol in the taste despite the 13%ABV, Creamy, velvety and smooth, moderate drinkability and crimson yet pitch black full body.

A totally embodiment of super rich, complex and exceedingly exceptional raspberry tart and sweet dessert. I really love this one and wish I had more of it. This beer is great ranging from not only the raspberry flavors but also the good dark fruit and caramel flavors that make up the doppel/trippel bock. I would definitely recommend it but only if you are willing to pay a little more than 10$ a bottle. Serious business!

Anime Corner:
Washu Hakubi from the Tenchi Muyo! Series was used in this pairing since I wanted someone cute to pair with the raspberries and the colors of the label as well. Washu sometimes carries around these little puppets that could represent the birdie but I could not find one that would work out. Oh well. Washu aside from having a crab-like hair do, she is all raspberry blown tongue emoticon.


Dragonhösen by Boulder Beer Company

Dragonhösen by Boulder Beer Company is a 9% ABV Imperial Oktoberfest/Märzen lager

Late at night in the dark cellar or among the rows of towering vessels at Boulder Beer, if you listen carefully you can hear the eerie sound of the Dragonhosen.
Brewed with generous amounts of Vienna and Munich malts for a rich, full-bodied malty flavor, Dragonhosen begins as a traditional Oktoberfest lager, then stealthily breathes fire with 9% alcohol by volume. Hallertau and Czech Saaz hops add balance with a mild earthy aroma and flavor with moderate bitterness.
If you find yourself at Boulder Beer, listen closely and beware… if you hear a scratching and scraping coming your way, the bite of the Dragonhosen is sure to follow.

Dragonhösen or Dragon Trousers… Not sure what they meant by this. Unless it they meant, it is befitting dragon of a beer. Challenge Accepted! Even if it is not October anymore, that doesn’t stop anyone from trying special Oktoberfest beers. This sucker was hard to find in California. In fact, many stores online will not ship it. Until I found the One of the reason I was attracted to this beer was the label but the style. German beers are delicious and sweet. The best part is that it comes in a 22oz.

Rich caramel, toffee, rye bread, honey, hazelnut, biscuit bread, butterscotch, nutmeg, caramelized, toasted bread, mild earthy hop notes, brown sugar, sugar cone, graham crackers, fruit cake notes, hint of a dark fruits and dates 

The beer leaves a nice caramel and rye bread aftertaste with some earthy bitterness. Alcohol is not present in the taste and has moderate drinkability

This beer is very good overall. It is a beer that seems to fall more along the lines of a doppel bock or even a Barleywine. I think this is the reason why I liked this one a lot. Malt forward and sweet! I think if you have tried some of the best German Doppel bocks out there, it may be close to this one. Love me some good German beers. 

Anime Corner:
Not sure what series this character is from. I could only find something about a Chinese series called “Scratch” and the character is Maid: Dragon King Ao Guang’s daughter. Anyways, the use of this piece of artwork in my mind could clearly be seen from the label’s art work. That and the fact that this woman is like a half woman half dragon. All to perfect and majestic, the Dragonhosen

Optímator by Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu is a 7.6% ABV German DoppelBock

The classic German dark beer, bottom fermented ’Doppel Bock’. Full bodied with a deep dark color and rich roasted malt flavor.

First had this beer with several coworkers on draft at the Red Lion in Downtown LA after visiting a brewery, which I will not name here because they were good in their own awesome way (Love that Sunny-D beer). As I remember it, it was so impacting that I had to try it again. From the makers of the delicious Franziskaner Dunkel which to me is the best dark heff in the world, aside from Weistephaner dunkel. Spaten makes an awesome doppelbock that attempts to take on what to me is one of the best Doppelbocks, Celebrator Doppelbock. They did a damn good job of it too as I remember. I was able to pick up a bottle locally and wanted to do a review. This is a common beer and can be picked up in many craft beer or specialty liquor shops. Even Downey Liquor in Downey California has it and they seem like a generic liquor store

Aromas are of rich figs, caramel, cinnamon, milk, sweet potatoes and yams boiled with piloncillo (Mexican sugar cone), vanilla and cinnamon sticks, rich toffee, raisins, hazelnut, cherries, oak, molasses, and chocolate

Flavors are of figs, raisins, caramel, cloves, raisin bread, cherries, rich molasses, cinnamon, sweet potato pie, yams, piloncillo, vanilla, cinnamon, toffee, hazelnut, chocolate, pecans, biscuit bread, brown sugar, whiskey notes, maple and oak

Aftertaste is of raisins, yams, cherries, vanilla, earthiness and piloncillo. Easy to moderate drinking on this one and has intense flavors even where the 7.6% ABV is nowhere to be found. 

Overall it is a damn great beer! Surely close to Celebrator in my opinion but greater to the sweeter yams than celebrator though. I will never forget how awesome it was on draft nor will I forget how much I liked this one. In terms of the style, this one is right next to my favorite Doppelbocks followed by the La Trappe Doppelbock and the Alesmith Decadence 2013 Doppelbock. Freaking unbelievable how the European beers always pull me in. Just so you know, My top 2 best common beers in the world are not even from the United States, leave that to Belgium and Canada for starting me up. Optimator is a definite try multiple times not doubt. Should be an “Octoberfest beer” requirement for sure

AleSmith Decadence Anniversary Ale was originally brewed in 2005 to celebrate our first decade in business. Our brewers had such a great time creating it that they decided to brew a new style each year to commemorate our anniversary.

Now in our eighteenth year, we bring you yet another addition to this legendary series. AleSmith Decadence 2013 is a classic German-style Doppelbock that follows the ancient brewing tradition of Bavarian monks. Originally called “Liquid Bread,” this style is characterized by a rich malt backbone that showcases notes of bread crusts and subtle hints of chocolate . A German lager yeast balances these flavors with a clean, full-bodied finish. Drink this meal in a glass now or cellar it for years to come.

Another glorious year for Alesmith and their over the top great ales. Cheers to you guys!! There has not been any review that I have had from them that has been bad. Everything I have had so far is either great or exceptionally exceeding expectations. Now to their 18th anniversary they release the German Doppelbock. A style of dark German beer which already, I have yet to get a bad review from. This style is simply remarkable. Now made by Alesmith? Well, we shall see

Aromas to start give a very nice toffee, caramel, biscuit, dark fruit raisins, banana, clove spice, figs, earthy notes, chocolate, rye bread, blackberry marmalade hints and hazelnut.

The flavors are very rich in toffee, dark raisins, cherries, plums, dulce de leche caramel, dates, figs, bananas, clove spice, rye bread, hazelnut, chocolate notes, boysenberry marmalade, cinnamon, gingerbread, fruit cake, apricots, earthy bitterness, pecans, grapes, anise and molasses.

The aftertaste is fruity, nutty and minor spicy. Almost like trail mix in a bottle, without the salt. Where is the Alcohol? Wow this is drinkable for a 10% ABV. Holy shit smooth!!

Overall I was very impressed. This is a great beer. It is very close to the quadruple beer style. It’s supposed to be made as a lager but in the German style. This is very befitting of the season, you know, Oktoberfest and the Fall and what not. People have to get this, it is a must try. Especially since it taste like trail mix!. If I would drink this at Oktoberfest, I would definitely need to carried home as I would not be able to taste the alcohol and this would cause me to get drunk quick. I am still waiting to taste the alcohol and well, feel it, but I know it will creep up very soon here.

I picked this one up since I was really curious. Dubbles and Doppel bocks are both really good beer styles in Belgium and Germany. However but to put them together and with figs and dates, this was definitely up my alley in terms of sweet beer goodness. The aromas of this beer include raisin bread, nuts, caramel, figs, toffee, fruit cake, bananas and cloves. The flavors are quite pleasant. You definitely get those nice Belgian bready notes and some toffee rich notes of the doppel along with bananas, raisins, dates, figs, plums, dried fruits, pecans, some hazelnut, caramel, earthy and spicy notes, fruit cake, slight vanilla, tangy and slightly tart cranberries, passion fruit, very small minty, molasses and licorice hints as well as a slight port wine flavor to it that reminded me of a Trois Pistoles light (If there ever was one). Ofcourse this is not the almighty Trois Pistoles, but needless to say, this beer turned out to be good. The earthy and minty or licorice like notes keep some of the excess sweetness away which tries to keep this hybrid balance. Overall I enjoyed this beer quite a lot. Definitely worth trying. So much so that I might get another one soon.
