Sometimes breweries make specialty IPAs that are single hopped or single malted. For El Segundo, a pure Nelson Sauvin hopped brew would make sense that they name it after the Simpson’s character, Nelson Muntz and his iconic laugh, HA! HA! It is very catchy and for a beer tribute to the Simpsons, it would only be a matter of time before I would do a review with Simpsons characters on it. Aside from that, Nelson Sauvin hops are a favorite of many hop heads for their aroma and flavors close to Sauvignon Blanc which are the wild green skinned grapes that are grown in many regions for wine, specifically Bordeaux, France. How they got such a cop is amazing. I am a more tropical hop person myself (Citra, Simcoe, Mosaic and Amarillo) but it is always nice to see hops be appreciated for their uniqueness to beers. In fact, I think technically, this would be my first time having a pure Nelson hopped brew. Let’s check it out, cheers!

Aromas:
Stone fruit peaches, apricot, sweetened condensed milk hints, vanilla hints, white wine grapes, Sauvignon Blanc, graham crackers, honey, lemon candy, orange peel, tropical fruit honey dew melon, berries, mango, passion fruit, earthy, floral and grassy hops.

Flavors:
Tropical fruit honey dew melon, pineapple, mango, passion fruit, dragon fruit, gooseberries, raspberries, cherries, strawberries, piney, grassy, earthy, herbal and floral hops, stone fruit peaches, apricot, sweetened condensed milk hints, white wine grapes, Sauvignon Blanc, graham crackers, honey, lemon candy, orange peel, vanilla, caramel hints, guavas and lychees.

Aftertaste:
Finishes dry with tropical fruit, herbal, floral and grassy hops, white grape hints, stone fruits and vanilla hints. No alcohol in the taste, honey colored clear body, smooth, crisp, clean and refreshing mouthfeel and easy to moderate drinkability.

Overall:
Another perfect IPA from El Segundo Brewing. These guys have never stopped amazing me ever since my first visit and the Power Plant Triple IPA that always blows my mind. That beer to this day is still one of my top favorites and in my mind still continues even through the juice haze craze with East Coast beers. However, this beer really shines with tropical fruits as well and the wild green grapes the hops are named for definitely bleed through in this beer. Very delicious and refreshing. If you are a fan of the Simpsons and IPAs, get this one!

Anime Corner:
Nelson Muntz, Bart Simpson, Michael D’Amico and Marge Simpson from the Simpsons were used in this pairing as the beer is tribute to the Simpsons. I always wanted to use Marge in a beer pairing but never found the opportunity. She definitely pairs well with the label colors. Ofcourse, I also wanted to bring Nelson himself as he is the star this beer is named for even for a Simpsons inspired brew.

14883415_10103680009368690_1907635724546794978_oRating: 4.5/5

À Tout Le Monde collaboration by Unibroue and MegaDeth is a 4.5% ABV Canadian Saison/ Farmhouse ale brewed with spices and Dry hopped.

Commercial Description:
A new beer from Unibroue born of the friendship between its Brewmaster Jerry Vietz and Dave Mustaine, legendary lead vocalist and founder of heavy metal group Megadeth, is officially launching today in the U.S. and Quebec. Named À TOUT LE MONDE as a nod to one of the band’s songs and one of their biggest hits in Quebec, this beer recalls the consonance of Unibroue’s flagship beer, La Fin du Monde.

Dave Mustaine became friends with Jerry Vietz during Megadeth tours in Quebec. During their time together, Dave and Jerry created À TOUT LE MONDE as a symbol of their friendship. “At Unibroue, we appreciate flavour – and we know Megadeth is anything but boring,” explains Jerry Vietz, Brewmaster at Unibroue. “To Megadeth’s delight and that of their fans and connoisseurs, we’re offering an uncompromising beer with rich hoppy aromas, created according to Dave’s personal tastes.”

“Our shared passion for excellence produced a one-of-a-kind saison beer,” added Dave Mustaine, Megadeth’s lead vocalist and founder. “I’m thrilled to present this new beer to my fans, and everyone who loves good beers with character.”

À TOUT LE MONDE ale is a flavorful Belgian style dry hopped golden saison with hoppy and spicy notes. Topped by an unctuous head, this beer will give fans a clean, fresh taste and a crisp dry finish inviting to take another sip.

==Introduction==

À Tout Le Monde or “For all the world or everyone” is inspired by the actual song in MegaDeth’s 1994 album, Youthanasia. This is the first time MegaDeth joins the craft beer scene after several awesome bands like AC/DC, Iron Maiden and many others worked to release their own brews. This choice to release something light was chosen as it would appeal to the massed. Basically something you can drink a lot of and still enjoy. It seems like a great choice and now that the beer is here on the site, let’s see what this awesome stuff is about. Cheers!

Aromas:
Stone fruit peaches, apricots, pepper corn, Herbal, Floral, spicy, earthy and tropical hops, coriander hints, lavender, farmhouse hay, biscuit bread and honey.

Flavors:
Herbal, Floral, spicy, earthy and tropical hops, peppercorn spice, Stone fruit peaches, apricots, mango, farmhouse hay, lavender, banana notes, honey, biscuit bread, wheat, vanilla, lemon zest, clove spices, sour apple notes, cane sugar hints, coriander notes and cranberry hints.

Aftertaste:
Finishes semi dry rich with notes of Stone fruits, biscuit bread, herbal, floral and earthy hops. No alcohol in the taste, hazy pale yellow medium body, crisp, clean, refreshing and effervescent mouth feel along with a sipping drinkability.

Overall:
A very good saison that has many of the awesome flavors you would find from many of the great saisons out there. While I think it does not bring anything new that I haven’t had before, this one is still awesome and delicious. I would definitely say this one is a good gateway representative and definitely something many people will enjoy, especially since it is Megadeth after all. Find this one, especially if you are a fan.

Anime Corner:
Sakuya Izayoi from Touhou Project and Vic Rattlehead from Megadeath were used in this pairing as I was definitely trying to search for Megadeth and anime. Long behold, I found these to be tagged with Megadeth on them. First, since Vic is in the label and second, Sakuya relates to it as she has the guitar and she stands in front of the lyrics “Never Walk Alone” and “Call to Arms”.

Tropical Platypus by Almanac Brewing

13559112_10103365060887970_4783664572929258138_oRating: 5.5/6

Tropical Platypus by Almanac Brewing is 6% ABV American Wild Ale Dry-Hopped Sour Ale Aged in Wine Barrels with Kiwi, Mango, Lime and Passion Fruit.

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

This special tropical ale is brewed in celebration of City Beer Store’s 10th Anniversary. Inspired by their adorable Platypus mascot, this equatorial sour blonde ale is aged in used wine barrels and oak foeders with an array of tropical fruits. We selected barrels with fruit-forward characters, and amplified those notes with the addition of kiwi, mango, lime and passionfruit. We tied the whole blend together with the addition of aromatic Galaxy hops from New Zealand. The finished beer is a tropical explosion, worthy of our duck-billed inspiration. Pair with celebratory anniversaries, pupu platters and white sand beaches.

When Almanac was in its infancy, City Beer Store was already a craft beer institution in San Francisco. They constantly fought for the craft beer industry and provided a home for new breweries looking to make a mark. In fact, they were the first to sell Almanac’s beer. This beer honors 10 years of providing a home for craft beer.

==Introduction==

Obtained this one from Craftshack.com along with other great beers. This one intrigued me because I made a tropical IPA with similar ingredients and trying this may give me an incite as to what to expect. The brew is a small bottle as with many of Almanacs delicious beers but with that being said, I will be taking my time analyze this one as I do with others but more importantly, try to take some flavors that may relate to my homebrew that will be ready in sometime in July 2016. The mix of fruits sounds so damn delicious but as a sour, I will have to see if it can compare to other sours I have had in the past. Let’s take a look. Cheers!

Aromas:

Tropical fruit kiwi, pineapple, mango, guava, dragon fruit, margarita notes, lime peel, lemons, limes, white wine grapes, passion fruit, stone fruit peaches, apricots, banana hints, clove hints, coriander hints, vanilla, oak, floral hop notes, lavender, cane sugar, chardonnay, peppercorn and wine grapes.

Flavors:

Rich Stone fruit peaches, apricots, sour apples, tropical fruit kiwi, pineapple, mango, passion fruit, dragon fruit, margarita notes, lime peel, lemons, limes, white wine grapes, concorde grapes, chardonay, peppercorns, waffle cone, cranberries, dark cherries, citrus, grapefruit, grassy, mild pine, floral and earthy hops, tangerine gummies, vanilla, oak, caramel, banana hints, clove hints, coriander hints, lavender, hibiscus hints, guavas.

Aftertaste:

Finishes dry with minor hints of tropics, limes, lemons, stone fruit, wine grapes, grapefruit, citrus and dank hops and sour funky notes. No alcohol in the taste. Hazy Pale Straw body, Crisp, refreshing and effervescent mouth feel with an easy drinkability.

Overall:

A very awesome and very exceptional sour showcasing so much tropical goodness. This is one of the best sours up there with the great ones I really love. The beer does shows a lot of flavors which I would definitely wanna see in my beer as it is supposed to be a tropical fruit IPA. However, this being a sour and oak aged is super well balanced and made. The balance of tart and sweet comes together very nicely. I highly recommend it if you love sours and especially dry hopped tropical sours.

Anime Corner:

Marino from Megaman X Command Mission was chosen in this pairing as I could not find a platypus but her colors represent all the tropical flavors of the beer. Even though she is not a platypus, her hair is long like the platypus tail and the holder that holds her sword is almost like a platypus bill. It is a stretch but I think the pairing works well.

GPA (German Pale Ale) by 3 Nations brewing

GPA (German Pale Ale) by 3 Nations brewing is a 5.2% ABV Dry Hopped Kolsh/Altbier

Label:
The Above Average Beer
Whats in a GPA? The unadventurous say midterms, flashcards and all-nighters. We take a more radical approach. After all, who cares what you graduated with? Our GPA consists of subtle blend of bitterness accompanied by passion fruit, citrus and tropical fruit like aromas. Go ahead, enjoy this above average beer, because your intelligence can’t be refined in the classroom.

==Introduction==

Obtained this one from my friend Aaron Mendiola atBeerMetalDude.com. Along with the recent beers and cans I received, this one is from another new brewery I have not tried before. The style seems intriguing as it looks like they are using a German yeast strain and malts but also hopping it up to the pale ale status. Something I don’t think I have tried before, so I am definitely looking forward to it. Drink local, cheers!

Aromas:
Citrus, Grapefruit, floral and piney hops, tropical fruit notes of passion fruit, dragon fruit, biscuit bread, honey, caramel, stone fruit peach notes, coriander spice, cane sugar and oranges.

Flavors:
Citrus, Grapefruit, floral and piney hop, tropical fruits of guava, passion fruit, dragon fruit hints, pineapple, honeydew melon, biscuit bread, crackers, honey, caramel, coriander spice, pilsner grain, cane sugar, stone fruit peaches, lychees and mild berries.

Aftertaste:
Finishing with nice tropic fruits, stone fruit hints coriander spice, honey and citrus hops. No alcohol in the taste, Honey colored light to medium body, crisp, smooth and refreshing mouthfeel with an easy drinkability.

Overall:
A pretty good pale ale. I tried to find the aspects of a German that I would see in like a German Kolsh but the majority of the flavors are notes. Still a good and drinkable brew that would be good for the summer. Give it a shot if you find it. Cheers!

Anime Corner:
Nakamura Rio from Ansatsu Kyoushitsu was a character I found as I wanted to pair with the beer’s theme of being from school from the label and the chalk board. I did also happen to find a character that would pair with the colors of the beer and the flavors as well. This was a nice art piece.

Josh the Revelator by Clown Shoes brewing is a 10.2% Double India Pale Ale Dry hopped with Mosaic, Galaxy and Ella hops.

Label:
We feel this label, which depicts Josh Baggett shredding a bridge building guitar in space as a he pedals a pin training-wheeled bicycle while baby unicorns are born in his wake, fairly represents Josh’s rigourous path promoting craft beer to Texas. Josh, we love you man! Dry hopped with Mosaic, Galaxy and Ella hops.

==Introduction==

Exclusive to Texas, I was able to bring this brew to the website thanks to my friend and fellow reviewer Aaron Mendiola of BeerMetalDude.com. Clown Shoes has been very good to our states providing certain exclusive beers to certain markets and since we are able find these, the opportunity to send each other the beers helps so that this way you can decide if you will do the search for the beer yourself. This beer was in tribute to one of their reps, Josh Baggett who lives and sells Clown Shoes in Texas. Some good stuff and definitely something I would like to try from Clown Shoes. Cheers!

Aromas:
Stone fruit peaches, apples, tangerine gummy bears, tropical fruit like dragon fruit, papaya, kiwi, honey dew melon, strawberries, passion fruit, prickly pear, papaya, guava, wild flower honey, grapefruit, piney, grassy and mildly herbal hops, caramel, biscuit bread, toffee, orange peel and vanilla.

Flavors:
Rich wild flower honey, caramel, biscuit bread, toffee, old oranges, orange peel, grapefruit, piney, grassy and mildly herbal hops, tropical fruit like dragon fruit, papaya, kiwi, honey dew melon, strawberries, passion fruit, prickly pear, papaya, guava, stone fruit peaches, apples, tangerine gummy bears, raspberry notes and mild strawberries

Aftertaste:
Finishes with a candied orange notes, tropical and stone fruit hints, earthy, piney and grapefruit hops. No alcohol in the despite the ABV, Golden Amber honey full body, silky, crisp, refreshing and rich mouthfeel with a moderate drinkability.

Overall:
A very good DIPA showcasing many of the flavors that I enjoy from Double IPAs like tropical fruits and citrucy hops. It is a limited release IPA but in case you don’t get a chance to try it, there are many other nice IPAs. It was difficult for me to differentiate it from other IPAs I have tried. I guess the strongest notes of like strawberry were some flavors that were outstanding. I recommend this one for sure if you can get it but there are other great IPAs out there.

Anime Corner:
Mioda Ibuki from Super Danganropa 2 was used in this pairing to pair with the colors of the label representing Josh as he uses his guitar and other musical instruments to make some awesome music flow like the flavor of this IPA to the taste buds as music would for the ears. Some deep IPA stuff.

Funky Gold Mosaic by Prairie Artisan Ales

1012623_10102148430230560_888258388784361221_nRating: 5/5

Funky Gold Mosaic by Prairie Artisan Ales is a 6.5% ABV American Wild Ale dry hopped in Mosaic hops.

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A dry hopped sour ale. Funky Gold Mosaic is a dry-hopped sour ale. We took Prairie Gold and dry-hopped it with a huge amount of Mosaic hops. The end results are tropical, sour, and an all around new beer drinking experience! This beer is great fresh, but will continue to develop as the wild yeast continues to work in the beer.
___

Prairie Artisan Ales are far and few from what we get a chance to see here in California. Lucky for me, it pays to have good friends closer to the source of some of the best craft beers in the country. Aaron from www.beermetaldude.com sent me this my way and now we have this nice beer to present to the site. The closest thing I can think of a hopped sour or hopped farmhouse ale is a beer I had before from The Bruery and Smog City called Kangarue. I would wish I had that one to compare to this but let us see what I can gather from this one.

Aromas:
Rich Lemon, Grapefruit, lemon candy, floral and piney hops, farmhouse hay, musty oak, vanilla, white grapes, peppercorn, leather notes, tangerines, oranges, brettanomyces, hibiscus flowers, tropical notes like pineapple, dragon fruit, hibiscus flowers, lavender and honey.

Flavors:
Grapefruit, fresh garden lemons, lemon peel, lemon candy, white grapes, lemonade hints, piney, grassy and floral hops, vanilla, biscuit bread, Farmhouse hay, musty oak, orange, tangerines, tart apricot, sour apple, flowers, pineapple, dragon fruit peel, sage spice and peppercorns.

Aftertaste:
Lingering farmhouse hay, flowers, rich citrus grapefruit, lemon and sage spice. No alcohol in the taste, moderate drinkability, medium mouthfeel, hazy yellow body, crisp and refreshing.

Overall:
This is damn perfect beer. It is a sour that is more of a tart fruit beer with very rich citrus hitting different spectrums of lemon to grapefruit to orange and more. Definitely similar to the Kangarue but plays off more on that lemon peel candy than the citrus orange sweetness. For that reason, it does differentiate to the palate. This was just as great and just as perfect as the Kangarue and I would highly recommend it if you can find this one. Prarie Artisan keeps making some awesome beers.

Anime Corner:
Several characters from the Touhou Project series were used in this pairing to pair similarly to the label where they are pretty much rummaging and browsing through items much like the people in the label are browsing through the internet. The point I think they were trying to make with the is even though sour beers maybe ignored by some people but hop heads enjoy their IPAs, this beer will make both sides, definitely want to explore and explore more the curiosity of how the flavors give to your taste experience especially since you get the best of both worlds here, the sour and the hoppy and how they are in perfect harmony.

Atomic Kangarue collaboration by The Bruery and Smog City

10356216_10102017683263530_2221085792071013665_n 10440646_10102017682979100_3087017942918613446_nRating: 5/5

Atomic Kangarue collaboration by The Bruery and Smog City is a 9.5% ABV American Wild Ale dry hopped and brewed with grapes.
Label:

HOLY SMOGOLY!
This complex ale was brewed with 2 grape varieties, fermented with brett trois, blended with a sour ale, dry hopped with Amarillo hops & bottled just for you.

We’ve been friends with the folks at Smog City for many years and getting to brew a beer with them was a dream come true. Truly, only in the world of dreams could this remarkable beer have been manifested. A Belgian-style golden ale, brewed with Semillon and Viognier grapes plus three types of hops, fermented with Brettanomyces Trois as well as our house yeast strain, then blended with a sour blonde ale and finally dry-hopped with Amarillo hops. This beer couldn’t be more complex and we couldn’t be more proud of it.

___

This beer was a collaboration from Torrance local favorite, Smog City and The Bruery of Placentia. When I first heard they were doing a collaboration, I really wondered how it would turn out. As the Bruery is mainly experimental Belgian styles and Smog City IPA and variety styles. They bring forth a beer that actually uses Smog City’s best kept secret, the use of Amarillo hops which is what fan favorite, Amarilla Gorilla is based on. So since the Bruery rarely uses or plays with hops in their potent beers, a 9% doucey with hops I could only imagine how it would go. This beer was originally released to Reserve Society members and I believe will be hitting the public venues where the Bruery and Smog City beers are sold. Definitely can’t wait to try it, so let me break this caged beast for you, cheers!!

Aromas:

Oranges, citrus, lemon peel, peppercorn, vanilla, herbal, floral, piney and grassy hops, biscuit bread, honey, farmhouse hay, white grapes, white sage spice, coriander, basil, garlic notes, dragon fruit, passion fruit, pineapple, strawberries, papaya, stone fruit like apricots, peaches, mango, herbs and spices.

Flavors:

Oranges, tangerine, white sage spice, floral notes, flowers, white grapes, brettanomyces, stone fruits like apricots, peaches, vanilla, caramel, lemon peel, citrus, grapefruit, herbal, floral, piney and grassy hops, rich biscuit bread, honey, farmhouse hay, basil, garlic notes, onion hints, dragon fruit, honey dew melon, passion fruit, pineapple, strawberries, papaya, farmhouse hay, herbs, honey, white wine grapes, musty funky notes, stone fruit apricots, peaches, old mango, coriander spice, clove spice and hints of allspice.

Aftertaste:

Tangy Oranges, Tropical fruit notes, floral hops, vanilla, herbs and spices linger. No alcohol in the taste, easy to medium drinkability, light to moderate mouthfeel, medium to light body, very crisp and refreshing.

Overall:

A perfect collaboration! Drinking more along of the Belgian Strong Pale Ale or Golden Ale, this beer definitely takes its roots and reminds me a lot of the Eschatological Ale from Stillwater if it was more sweeter with grapes and a bit more tropical. This beer is not a complete sour at all. The balance with the bitter hops and the brettanomyces helps it blend to a sweet, bitter and sour/tart tri-force of flavors.

Anime Corner:

Android 18/Lazuli from Dragon Ball Z/GT was used in this pairing to pair with the Sour Blond aspect and the colors of the beer as well as several things. Lazuli was evil in her beginnings but it wasn’t until she was in danger and was cared for by the protagonist Krillin, in which she learned to care and love. She grew sweeter and softer which eventually showed her true powers. This is reflected in the beers tropical and sweet yet bitter and sour aspect. Hey just because 18/Lazuli is sweet and awesome she still has attitude. That ain’t going away. Her stance is that of like an animal style in Kung-Fu lore. I have no idea what it is but let us call that one “The Kanagarue” Style lol. While I added Trunks in the mix, I wanted to basically show that basically, the Bruery while all powerful, a brewery like Smog City, in this case Lazuli, can bring so much more to the table and together can take the world by storm. Awesome job guys!!

Pivo Hoppy Pils by Firestone Walker

60757_10101288137234620_1041794758_nRating: 4.5/5

Pivo Hoppy Pils by Firestone Walker is a 5.3% ABV German Pilsner dry hopped in Saphir

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION (ratebeer.com)
Everything we love about classic German Pilsner with a hoppy Bohemian twist. Pils is a bright straw colored lager beer with playful carbonation topped with beautiful white foam lace. Delicate lightly toasted malt flavors underscore noble German hop character. Hallertau-grown Magnum hops deliver the lupulin foundation while generous amounts of Spalter Select hops bring floral aromatic and spicy herbal notes. As a twist on the traditional Pils, we dry hop with German Saphir for a touch of bergamot zest and lemongrass. A refreshing, light-bodied and hop-driven Pils.
___

Some pilsners can actually be really good. Especially when made right and with good quality ingredients. One of my favorite Pilsners was the Staropramen. This intrigues me because it is hopped up to taste like a pale lager. So on with the show.

Aromas are of light grassy and floral hop notes, pilsnery sugary malts, lemongrass, biscuit bread and peppercorns.

The flavors are of refreshing grassy hops, citrus, lemon peel, peppercorns, biscuit bread, floral hops, herbs and spicy notes

This is what lagers and pilsners should be like. Very clean all the way through with very nice crisp and refreshing aftertaste with a nice dry and light lemony feel. Well balanced, nothing too intense but something that is so very relaxing. This beer is very sessionable and a great gateway beer for the non-craft drinkers. Awesome stuff
