Ancient mariners braved the Aegean, holds laden with figs and raisins. They faced great storms, monstrous sea creatures, and merciless pirates. But all paled compared to the Sirens, whose enchanted songs drifted to sea and drew the sailors to their end.

Our dark ale, Sirens’ Song, pays homage to the lost cargos, with figs and raisins added to the brew kettle. The resulting beer is dark, mysterious, and as irresistible as the Sirens’ seductive song.

Roasted malt and burnt sugar aromas lead, followed by flavors of dark fruit and notes of dark caramel. The finish is smooth and balanced with subtle bitterness.

Ommegang has been one of my favorite Belgian style breweries making great beers including one of my top 3 favorites in the world, Three Philosophers. They recently released this new Belgian Dark Strong brewed with figs and raisins. While Belgian yeast, candi sugars and the right malts and hops can create great complexity similar to these fruits, adding them brings about other unique complexities. So I can definitely see how this may actually elevate the beer to higher levels of flavors. Let’s see who this dark ales does, cheers!

Super dark fruits of raisins, prunes, currants, figs, dates, plums, raspberries, pears, apples, Banana cream pie, Banana sundae, dark chocolate notes, dulce de leche caramel, vanilla, maple syrup, cloves, anise, coriander, stone fruit peaches, apricots, cinnamon, peppercorn, dark candy sugar, piloncillo sugar cone, rock candy, rye bread, molasses, pecan pie, hazelnut, pralines, peanut clusters, marzipan, toffee, apple pie, peach cobbler, peach preserves and port wine.
Finishing up with rich dark fruits, vanilla, dulce de leche caramel, stone fruit, bananas, dark candy sugar, clove spice and marzipan notes. No alcohol in the taste. Full Crimson body. Smooth, creamy, and velvety mouthfeel and a moderate to sipping drinkability.

Exceptional dark Belgian with so much dark fruit complexity. The figs and raisins actually did make a difference enhancing the beer, which I can only assume the base was already delicious. The phenolic and banana flavors really stand out wonderfully almost making this more of a banana and dark fruit dessert. It has been a long time since I have tried a new Belgian from Ommegang and trying these new beers are always pleasant. I highly recommend this one to those that love dark Belgians.
Anime Corner:
Ariel from Disney’s the Little Mermaid as well as original Siren and mermaid characters were chosen for this pairing as it was the obvious choice to go with the name of the beer and the label colors. It was something that I felt should have been easy but I also wanted to give a pairing to the name which is the Song of the Siren and there for it shows Ariel singing. While Sirens and Mermaids differ in how much more of a fish they are and other characteristics, some mermaids can be seen as sirens. So I think it worked out just fine.

However, since we have no idea when our time will expire or when we’ll be forced to cash in our tickets, we offer this simple advice. Live an inspired life. For an interesting life is one worth living. Challenge yourself to embrace passion, persistence and a motivated way of life. So that when Judgment Day arrives from nowhere, you’ll go out knowing full well that you’ve lived your life on your terms and they can’t take that away from you.

A massive beer in every sense of the word. A stronger and more contemplative version of our Lost and Found Ale. Judgment Day is the base beer for our Cuvee de Tomme. Many of the Trappist Breweries produce a version of beer which ages incredibly well for many years to come. And, since none of us knows when the end of the world is coming, we suggest you stock up with lots of Lost Abbey beers so that when the end of the world magically appears from nowhere, you’ll have a beer or two on hand for even the stingiest of angels. The story has been told and we have been warned about this very moment- Judgment Day and the end of the world as we cease to know it. There will be but one instance where the sunny blue pastoral skies turn sickly black revealing the imminent demise of every soul caught between heaven and hell. From the skies the angels of heaven will race to rescue the virtuous souls before the thundering herd of the 4 Horsemen arrive from the depths of hell to claim more than their fair share. Each of us will ride a wave of terror or relief not knowing from which lot our souls have been cast. It is wholly possible that the Sinners and Saints alike will unite. For sure, each will thrash about in the tumultuous sea of uncertainty not knowing in this abyss whether they bear the mark of the Father or the mark of the Beast himself. There will be a litany of screams from the departing souls riding bareback on the shoulders of the Black Horse. Each of us will be examined and our lives will be scrutinized. It is decreed and so written. Life as we know it will one day cease to exist. Surely you will stand there having all your questions answered.

The very first Quadrupel I have ever had in my life is essentially one of the beers in the world close to my heart along with the St. Bernardus 12abt that really started everything for me back in 2010. This beer being one of my top 10 while being very common is one that really got craving it ever since I saw it at Bevmo when I visited my friend Adrian in West Covina so many years ago. I had no idea what the hell craft beer was and back then the only thing I really knew in terms of craft beer was New Belgium Fat Tire. The stunning artwork was what really brought me in to the world of craft beer. Coming from an anime background, I really had a strong appreciation for different types of artworks that moved into the label appreciation to eventual taste and art comparison to what you know today as the beer and art pairings and ultimately, my own homebrewing and brewing ideas for recipes. Today I pay tribute to those amazing days and this beer that really lead me to an awesome appreciation for something I consider very mystical, perplexing, awe inspiring and really, the lost treasures of taste and art. Exceptionally delicious!! There is always a reason to go back to one’s roots. Despite having tried better quadrupels and world class beers, there is no denying that the beers that started it all which, for most part, “common beers”, are the ones that will always be the best and hold a special place. For being the first quad I tried in 2010, this one is world class to me. So much dark fruit and dark candi sugar forward. Many quadrupels have different appealing characteristics. St. Bernardus is a Dulce De Leche La Trappe Quad is Banana and caramel driven and Weyebacher Blasphemy is pecan pie driven. These are just examples of great quads I have loved and each one delicious and unique in their own ways. I highly recommend this one to all!
Anime Corner:
KOS-MOS from Xenosaga was brought once again since I had used her to pair with the first time I did an anime beer review pairing of the Judgment Day ale. She is one of my favorite characters so since I chose her the last time I choose her again. The reason I chose her has to do with Xenosaga in general. If the coming for the 4 horseman of the apocalypse also involves the return of Jesus, then it fits perfectly. Xenosaga has many themes of the Christian religion and bible references. Heck, KOS-MOS is essentially supposed to be a vessel for the return of Mary Magdalene, Jesus wife in some scriptures. Although, KOS-MOS ends up being her own individual as we find out near the end of the trilogy that Mary Magdalene is separate from KOS-MOS. Regardless, her ties to Christianity is one of the main reasons I chose her for this pairing.

24 Carrot Golden Ale collaboration by Juli Goldenberg, Stone brewing and Monkey Paw brewing is an 8.5% ABV Belgian Carrot Cake Golden Ale brewed with Carrots, Cinnamon, Raisins and Vanilla Beans.

2015 marked the seventh year of our American Homebrewers Association-sanctioned Stone Homebrew Competition. As in the previous years, dozens of Southern California’s finest recreational fermentationist brought their “A” games. While judging their impressive and wide-ranging handiwork, we noticed something -many of the homebrew entries we’ve received over the history of this competition have incorporated culinary elements of been crafted to mimic the flavors of popular dishes and beverages. From Mexican hot chocolate to Black Forest cake, after-dinner mints to piña coladas, the gold medalist from our annual brewing battle have tackled some interesting and challenging flavor profiles…and persevered. But none have been as foodie-forward as the quaff concocted by this year’s winner, Juli Goldenberg. Our first-ever female victor added carrots, raisins, cinnamon and more to a Belgian-style golden strong ale to create a beer that is the liquid embodiment of carrot cake. The aforementioned flavor enhances bring the fruity, carroty and spice elements to the cake, while vanilla and milk sugar contribute the flavor and creamy texture of fluffy cream cheese frosting. The result: nothing short of brilliant and well deserving of the 24 karat (carrot?) golden opportunity to be brewed by Stone and distributed across the country.

Stone’s newest homebrewing competition winning collaboration is here and it is definitely different. For the many brews I have tried over the years, I do not think there has been a carrot cake like beer. I am always open to crazy beer recipes (just like the 99 scorpions). When executed correctly, these beers can be awesome and some will give new experiences. This type of experimentation is kind of what pushes me to try something new now that I do my own homebrewing. It should pave the way for the culinary arts to meet the craft beer arts. Let’s take a look and see what this carrot cake beer is all about.

Rich Carrot Cake flavors with citrus, grapefruit, grassy and tropical hop bitterness, Carrot juice, Golden raisins, Dark fruit raisins, plums, cinnamon, flan, dulce de leche caramel, flan, vanilla, brown sugar, hazelnut nectar, Candi Sugar, piloncillo hints, horchata notes, guava, mango hints, dragon fruit, passion fruit, stone fruit peaches, raspberry hints, Danish cream, butterscotch, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, crème brulee, bananas and clove spice.

Citrusy, grassy, piney hop after taste with the full fledged flavors of the carrot cake like the carrot juice, whipped cream, brown sugar, cinnamon and raisins left. No alcohol in the taste. Clear golden orange body, smooth creamy, silky and refreshing mouth feel and a moderate to sipping drinkability.

A very delicious Golden ale that really does taste like what it sets out to be, a carrot cake dessert in a bottle. Essentially I couldn’t help but notice how very similar it was to my Bubulubu White Choco Stout/Golden Ale in the sense that if I took out the Coffee and Cocoa nibs and replaced it with Carrot concentrate, raisins and cinnamon, and the rest was the same like the milk sugar, vanilla beans and the Golden Ale stout, then you pretty much have a similar tasting and very delicious beer. I highly recommend this one as it really took the aspect of culinary and home brewing the next level here. Cheers!

Anime Corner:
Lola Bunny from Looney Toons and Space Jam was chosen in this pairing since I wanted to pair with the aspect of Carrots and Rabbits. I could of gone with Bugs Bunny, but you don’t often get to see Lola and she is perfect as she also has the orange basketball which pairs nicely with the colors of the beer carrots. Since this beer reminded me so much of the Bubulubu one I made, Lola is a reminder as her brown fur was the color or my beer that tasted similar to this.

Tetravis (Barrel Room Collection) by Samuel Adams is a 10.2% ABV Belgian Quadruple (Quad) Aged in Oak Barrels with Rich notes of Currants, Raisins and Clove

Bold & rich, this enveloping quad builds its force and character through interlacing layers of flavor.

Its deep complexity begins with a molasses sweetness with notes of dark fruits like raisin and fig and develop further with an undercurrent of tart spice from its distinctive Belgian yeast for a truly transfixing brew.

One of our brewers’ favorite places to experiment is in the barrel room at our Boston Brewery. It’s here that each of our Samuel Adams Barrel Room Collection brews was born.

Been looking for this quad all year long to go with my last review, the Belgian Thirteenth Hour Stout. I am a big fan of quadruples, so a beer made by Sam Adams I definitely could not pass up. Especially a Barrel Aged one.

Aromas start off with nice dulce de leche caramel notes, vanilla, apricot, plums, raisin bread pudding, brown sugar, candi sugars, toffee, slight oak notes, banana, currants, some clove notes, molasses and figs.

The flavors are where it’s at. Reminiscent of Trois Pistoles, rich dark fruits like raisins, figs, plums, dulce de leche caramel, vanilla, port wine, chocolate notes, dates, molasses, rum notes, cola notes, pecans, bananas, cloves, phenols, oak wood notes, apricots, pears, brown sugar and cinnamon.

At 10.2% No alcohol present in the taste. Aftertaste ends a little dry with some notes of the raisins and caramel making you want to drink more, even if it is a sipper.

Overall I definitely enjoyed this one. The Barrel room series so far has been nothing but splendid stuff. Something about this beer really reminds me of a St. Bernardus and Trois Pistoles hybrid. Definitely more Trois Pistoles. Maybe Sam Adams and Unibroue use similar Belgian yeast?? Regardless, this is fantastic stuff. Belgian beer lovers may enjoy this one for sure. Even if I can find Trois Pistoles easier, this is definitely an awesome beer.

Birra Etrusca Bronze collaboration with DogFish Head, Birra del Borgo, Baladin and Dr Patrick McGovern

Birra Etrusca Bronze collaboration with DogFish Head, Birra del Borgo, Baladin and Dr Patrick McGovern is an 8.5%ABV Traditional Spiced and Spiced Ale brewed with honey, hazelnut flour, heirloom wheat, myrrh, gentian root, raisins, pomegranate juice & Pomegranates

Dogfish Head worked with our Birreria Brother Brewers (Birra del Borgo and Baladin) and biomolecular archeologist Dr. Patrick Mcgovern to create this Ancient Ale. We made a research pilgrimage together to earl Etrusca warrior tombs in the hills and along the coast of Tuscany. The 8th c. B.C. Recipe is based on chemical and botanical evidence of tree resins; beeswax and honey; whole pomegranates; hazelnuts; grapes; and apples found inside ancient jars and drinking-bowls. It represents the prehistoric mixed beverage of Italy before the arrival of wine. Our version is fermented with bronze, a popular material brewing and cooking in the Etruscan era.

Dogfish Head has been known to come out with some really awesome ales. Especially those with a lot of history behind them and research. This one is one of their latest coming all the way from Rome
Upon opening the beer, there was a great amount of fragrance that reminded me of the Shati beer. Honey, biscuit, herbs, spices, Banana cloves, flowers, citrus, grapes, cherries, pomegranate, sweet bread, brown sugar, hazelnuts and almost like a corn or wheat tortilla smell. The flavors are kinda mixed and complex. Hazelnut and caramel biscuit bread, candi sugar, oranges, banana cloves, raisins, pear, grapes, pomegranate, herbs, spices and slight peppercorn. I almost feels like sugary and fruity wheat or corn tortilla in the after taste. Not a bad thing at all really. It is different in a good way. Some of the ingredients I have not tried so I can only guess as to how close the flavors are of the beers to something I can relate to. Another Delicious Ancient Masterpiece brought to life by Dogfish Head. Give it a try 😛

Bourbon Barrel Aged 4 Calling Birds by The Bruery

Bourbon Barrel Aged 4 Calling Birds by The Bruery is a 14.8%ABV Belgian Dark Ale Brewed with spices and aged in Bourbon Barrels.

The fourth verse of our “Twelve Beers of Christmas” saga incorporates ginger-like spice into a rich and robust dark ale. Happy Holidays!

This is a barrel aged version of the original 4 calling birds. Haven’t tried the original but this one is still awesome, maybe even better :P. The aromas immediately are of strong vanilla, dulce de leche caramel, coconut and banana crème pie, bourbon, raisins, cherries, holiday fruit cake, some chocolate and coffee cake. The flavors are pretty complex with a major solidification of Bourbon, Vanilla, matured Banana, dulce de leche caramel, coconut, cinnamon, nutmeg, gingerbread, fruitcake with dark fruits like plums raisins, cherries, a bit of apple, hazelnuts, pecans, dark chocolate and and some citrus. The aftertaste is a lot like banana and raisins with some good bourbon and vanilla still there. The alcohol is well hidden, yet do take your time with this. While it is very delicious, it is past the 10%ABV and quite hefty in alcohol. An 8oz serving would suffice and save some for later :). Good flavor is hard to come by. Some beers meet or exceed expectations. For me, this one exceeded them quite a bit. If you can find it…fuck yeah!!!

Elysian Doom

Beer#12 (December) Doom is a 6% ABV Golden Treacle Pale Ale brewed with oats and fermented with golden syrup and raisins. Doom is the End.
This is the final installment to the series depicting the End has come…

Doom is in reference to the final apocalyptic event of ultimate judgment. Whether it was the good deeds or bad that had set fate in motion or simply predetermined at birth, the final stage in which will result into the ultimate judgment of that fate will be sealed. We have already passed 12-21-2012 which was set as the Mayan Apocalypse to be the end of the world. Since it did not happen, does not mean that humanity itself is invulnerable to each individuals fate. We are mortals, we will face death one day and what comes after is the unknown. However, it is believed some type of fate or judgment will come after. Whether you are brought back as a speck of energy, a fly, another person, whether there is a heaven or hell OR whether your existence becomes another piece to the molded universe of this reality…nothing is certain. Things happen for a reason and all we can do is wait and see what happens. Till then, pass the time and drink some phenomenal beers 😛

This is it, the final beer in the series. Upon opening the beer, there was some tropical fragrances reminiscent of a double IPA or an Imperial Pale Ale. Aromas of mango, orange, papaya, pineapple, hop grass, grapefruit, treacle syrup, honey and caramel. There is no aromas of raisins in the fragrance though. The flavors are of orange, tangerines, mango, lemon, pine, grassy and grapefruit hops, honey, caramel, treacle syrup, matured bananas, raisins and a little bit of biscuit bread. The matured banana dryness and hoppy bitterness remains in the aftertaste along with the notes from the tropical fruits. It is pretty good ale and reminiscent of a more Tropical IPA but with lower ABV. Recommended to those that like tropical hoppy pale ales.

So that when judgement day approaches from nowhere, you’ll go out knowing you’ve lived your life on your terms and they can’t take that away from you.” Simply amazing quote and simply and amazing Quad ale which is this, The Lost Abbey Judgement Day Ale brewed with raisins. Flavors are very impacting from the dark fruits, cherries, chocolate, brown sugar, vanilla and caramel. A creamy smooth beer yet heavy at 10.5% ABV. The Belgian yeast of bready goodness is there for sure and is fermented 4 times. Quads are definitely some of my favorite beers in the world and this is definitely in my most 10 ten best beers of all time. I highly recommend this one without a shadow of a doubt. Come to think of it, it was around this time last year when I enjoyed my first bottle. Looking back with a more experienced tongue brings a greater appreciation to this crazy hobby of mine. Something that will last me for quite a long time …and I am thankful because my life is interesting to me and doing it in my terms is always the best :)….Cheers for beers…..and say your prayers >:)
