I was given this special gift by my friend Brian and his wife who were able to get this beer for me from Belgium about a year ago. I have tried many Belgian beers over the years and would someday love to go. This one, however, I have never heard of. Also, a 10% ABV at that and a lager. So I decided to save it for a special occasion. It is almost reached is best before date of 1/3/2017 so I decided I would give this a shot for one of my final new year beers. Here’s to you Brian, I appreciate the humble gift and thanks for supporting my work, cheers!

Aromas:
Malty sweet, cane sugar, biscuit bread, honey, waffle cone, blonde candi sugar, marshmallows, stone fruits and citrus notes.

Flavors:
Rich malty notes, biscuit bread, pilsner grain, cane sugar, rich honey, banana hints, phenolic hints, piloncillo sugar cone, stone fruit peaches, apricots, plums, waffle cone, citrus, tangerine gummies, brown sugar, agave hints, Cadbury caramel cream eggs, Danish cream, sweetened condensed milk, crème brulee hints, flan and marshmallows.

Aftertaste:
Finishes dry with bitter flavors and slightly malty sugar notes, pilsner grain and earthy hop notes. Slight alcohol in the taste. Clear Golden light body, crisp, smooth, clean, velvety and refreshing mouthfeel along with a sipping drinkability.

Overall:
A very delicious beer. Reminding me of the Leffe Blond, if it was imperialized. This is definitely a strong version of a lager and is essentially, in my opinion, what some lagers should be. At least in terms of being more complex. It does remind me a lot of the awesome sweet strong beers like Belzebuth and Samichlaus. I really loved this one except for the finish which is dry and bitter. Not bad it is just that for a 10% ABV beer I would want this to linger. I wish they would sell this here in the states at higher volumes. I would drink this over basic lagers. Definitely worth searching for.

Anime Corner:
Mercy from Overwatch was chosen in this beer pairing as I wanted to convey the fact that even though this is a lager, it is also a blond. The golden color, the name of the beer and even angelic as it is from Belgium. These are items that I figured would fit great with this beer. Angels are strong creatures as well so that definitely represents the ABV of the beer as well.

Damn! If this did not come out of Davey Jones locker I don’t know what to say. The sweetness is damn on par with delicious coconut rice pudding. This is one hell of a beer. I really don’t know how they were able to incorporate the rice and coconut in there. I can find myself drinking this every single day without stop. Sounds crazy right? Well, this beer is so damn light and so damn drinkable that its dangerous cuz its so damn delicious!

Anime Corner:
Rikku from the Final Fantasy X and X-2 series was used in this pairing to pair as the pirate of gold. The golden liquid inside the bottle that is mainly the treasure overall. Rikku pairs her colors and complements the beer color, the label colors but mainly the whole theme of this being a pirate beer overall. Also, with the beach setting, it is like she is out in a tropical island somewhere which showcases the beers tropical flavors.

The Hobbit Gollum Precious Pils by Fish Tale Brewing is a 9.5% ABV Imperial Pilsner brewed with North West Hops.

Label:
The Tale of Gollum
Once a hobbit-like creature named Smeagol, Gollum’s body and soul have been poisoned by the power of a small, plain, gold ring that he has kept hidden deep in a dark cavern within the Misty Mountain Unaware of the true nature of this Ring, Gollum knows only that it is more “precious” to him that life itself.

Do I even have to ask about this series? Hype? possibly Nerdgasm? Maybe, regardless, it does not matter. The Lord of The Rings has been an awesome series of books and movies created from the written work of JR Tolkien. The fact that they release a set of beers in honor of the series is pretty damn awesome. The Game of Thrones series has its own beers brewed by Ommegang and while those are very good, I really wanted to see what these are all about. In this first one, we see Gollum with the precious pils. When I think of pilsner I think a borderline to a lager, but when I saw the ABV, I really thought twice. The last couple of Imperial Pilsners I had were nothing more than AMAZING… I hope this precious beer is just as awesome, so let’s go through this one and see what Gollum has been hiding…

Aromas:
Honey, tangerine, citrus and piney hopes, caramel, pilsner malt, caramel, tropical fruits, brown sugar, floral notes, coriander spice, stone fruit peaches and apricots, vanilla, rock candy and tropical hints.

Flavors:
Citrus, piney hopes, pilsner malt, honey, caramel, biscuit bread, butterscotch, apples, rock candy, floral notes, stone fruit peach hints, apricot, coriander spice, brown sugar hints, vanilla, tangerine candy, peppercorns, Danish sugar cookies, tropical fruits like pineapple, dragon fruit and bits of papaya.

Aftertaste:
Leaving traces of tangerine, hops, honey, floral notes and peppercorns. No alcohol intervening in the taste but slightly boozy, a sipping beer with a slightly syrupy mouth feel, light body, crisp and refreshing.

Overall:
Drinks like a champ! A really good pilsner boderlining the tripel and golden ale styles but still taking you back to what a pilser is all about. A precious, pilsner as gold as the ring Gollum adored so much which really fits the name. This is worth a try as there may not be many imperial pilsners out there and this one goes to show just what pilsners are capable of and that is just awesome!

Anime Corner:
Minda from The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princes was used in this pairing because I wanted to pair Gollum as a small creature that became small from a Hobbit form. Midna can turn into a Human so it kind of works. Also in the pictures, Midna tries to reach out to the audience with that “My precious” look on her face. The fact that her expressions and somewhat evil like appearance compliments that of Gollum, the tropical and stone fruit flavors of the beer and some colors of the label as well as the fact that they both come from a Medieval Fantasy story, she fits right in complimenting Gollum all the way!
