2013 Samichlaus Classic by Schloss/Castle Brewery Eggenberg in Austria is a 14% ABV World Class Doppelbock.
Label:
The World’s Most Extraordinary Beverage
Brewed only once a year on December 6. Samichlaus is aged for 10 months before bottling. This beer is perhaps the rarest in the world. Samichlaus may be aged for many years to come. Older vintages become more complex with a creamy warming finish.

Once holding the title of “World Strongest Beer”, this beer was the first time I had tasted anything above 12% ABV back in 2010.I had done a review on the Helles version of this beer but this is really the first time I bring this one here to brewerianimelogs. Why have I avoided it? I really don’t know as this beer is one of the greatest examples of its style. I think at some point I was mainly just reviewing for local beers and mainly for art. Either way, the good thing is that it is now here for the review. This beer can be found in many craft brew shops that sell imported beers. While it maybe a tad pricey, a 12oz of this is probably all you really need to just relax for the night. They do come in 22oz bottles now…so yeah!…Cheers!

Flavors:
Liquid dulce de leche caramel, pilocillo sugar cone, rich dark fruit prunes, plums, raisins, brown sugar, candied yams, candied peaches in maple syrup, toffee, raisin bread pudding, pecan pie, prailines, molasses, rye bread hints, biscuit bread, butterscotch, dark cherry yogurt, bananas, clove spice, stone fruits like apricots, melon, honey, apples, barley wheat bread and blackberry preserves on toast.
Aftertaste:
Brown sugar, dark fruits like dark cherry yogurt, banana hints, piloncillo and stone fruit linger linger. Partial Boozyness in the taste but mainly fruity sweet with no burn or detracting form the complex flavors. It really covers up the alcohol somehow. The beer has a sipping drinkability, syrup mouthfeel and a blood crimson deep amber but clear appearance. Hardly any head retention with a lot of alcohol leags.
Overall:
Perfect beer for it’s style. This beer makes me feel like Dracula. Its crimson appearance, the fact that it is brewed in a castle and comes in a creepy bottle with a potent rich complexity yet clear crimson amber appearance, whys shouldn’t it be the perfect beer for like Halloween or something. What is so special about December 6? I have no idea, but I do know I highly recommend this beer. It is damn insane! If you don’t like strong beers, keep away as you will be surprised by this magic potion.
Anime Corner:
Undead Norsgard original character by Genzoman of Deviantart.com was used in this pairing to pair with Samichlaus because I wanted to bring about the beer flavors, the history and creation of the beer and what it represents and the color of the label. As you can see, this beer was made in a castle in Austria, used to be the strongest in the world and the colors definitely compliment with the complexity and the strength of the character. While the character may or may not be evil, the whole thing I said about Dracula the beer being crimson deep blood amber red, well it does fit as well. Can you think of any thing else that pairs well about this piece?
