Dead Man’s Game by The Lost Abbey is a 14% ABV American Strong Ale/Cuvee of a Belgian Quadrupel ale aged in Bourbon Barrels and an English Barleywine aged in Rum Barrels

Label:
Blend of Bourbon barrel-aged Judgment Day and Rum barrel-aged Angel’s Share

==Introduction==

Obtained this one at my local Total Wine & More. The combination of two barrels has always been an up and coming unique trait of breweries. While it is now easier to find specialty aged beers, it is surely difficult to find some that actually do two or three barrels or more. So in those cases, a beer that is aged in several liquors may promise to be something truly unique. For the beers at the Lost Abbey, I have always liked certain beers they release even though some maybe totally out of my price range. Regardless, this one is one you can also find. Let’s have a look, cheers!

Aromas:
Rum, bourbon, tropical notes, dark fruit, Belgian candi sugar, cinnamon, brown sugar, figgy pudding, sweetened condensed milk, flan, bananas, clove spice, tiramasu, port wine hints, Chambord raspberry liqueur, almond joy cookies, marshmallow smores, rocky road ice cream, oak, vanilla and dulce de leche caramel.

Flavors:
Dark Chocolate, bourbon, rum, oak, dark fruit raisins, plums, figs, prunes, blackberries, currants, cherries, vanilla, dulce de leche caramel, German chocolate, chocolate mousse, Mexican raisin bread, marshmallows, piloncillo sugar cone, Belgian candi sugar, cinnamon, brown sugar, figgy pudding, sweetened condensed milk, flan, bananas, clove spice, tiramasu, port wine hints, Chambord raspberry liqueur, almond joy cookies, marshmallow smores, rocky road ice cream, wafflecone, toasted rye bread, wine grapes, stone fruits, honey, fruit cake, agave, dates, slight mango, tropical fruit and toasted coconut flavor.

Aftertaste:
Fishing with complex caramels, oak, vanilla, caramel, dark fruit, sweetened condensed milk, bananas, clove spice, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, pecan pie, hazelnut nectar, anise, molasses, flan, rum, bourbon and marshmallows. Slight booziness but not detracting from the awesome flavors, murky dark brown full body, smooth, creamy and chewey mouthfeel along with a sipping drinkability.

Overall:
Pretty damn amazing! Exceptional and well one that is certainly worth cellaring. I really love this one as it complements the other cuvees of Cuvee De Tomme and Deliverance. Complexities from both barrels showcasing the special nuances that come with these complex beers. It is surely a bucket lister for me as I love the original beers on their own and love this blend even more. Cheers!

Anime Corner:
Shiro from Deadman Wonderland was the perfect choice to pair with this beer not only for the sake of the name and for an anime based on death games. This beer also pairs well with Shiro’s dual personality as done with the Double barrel of bourbon and rum so both instances show case the complexity of the experience here. Shiro is also the color of death as well so overall, it was the best choice.

2017 Deliverance by The Lost Abbey is a 12.5% Angel Share (Brandy Barrel aged Barleywine) and BBA Serpent Stout (Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout) hybrid/cuvee.

Label:
Whether you’re a “Lead us not into Temptation.” or a “Deliver us from Evil” son of person matter not. The end of the world is no longer near. It’s Frigging upon us! Apocalypse. Doomsday and Armageddon have all converged on earth rendering it one gigantic volcanic lake of pestilence. Free will caught the bus out of town and Salvation can only be found in the outstretched hands of His Redeeming Angel’s. It’s sad but true. Our lots were cast long ago and Judgment has arrived. There is nothing we can do to improve our standings. They don’t offer cuts in the Line of Heaven. So stop trying to “Love thy neighbor” and join us as we kick back waiting for our souls to be fetched. In honor of civilization’s end, we put together your own personal Deliverance in a bottle. It won’t save you from Satan’s grasp. But sin tastes good. So, bottom’s up. Or is it down?

Another favorite of mine. Possibly even more than the Serpent’s Stout, the Deliverance Ale. A brew I once travelled over several hours on several busses to and forth to a store that had this beer. This was my first experience with a “Double Barrel” or “Double Spirit aged” beer blend. A blend of a stout and barley wine. It was also hard to find way back then and was one of the beers responsible for my passion of collecting beer artwork along with the other Lost Abbey beers. So when they updated the label and brought it back to the marketplace, I had to bring it to the site. A pricey little bottle but in my opinion, worth all the pennies. So let’s go and embrace the amalgamation of the liquid consciencecial turmoil, cheers!

Aromas:
Dark fruit raisins, figs, currants, prunes, plums, blackberries, dark cherries, raspberries, Dark Chocolate, milk chocolate, Bakers Chocolate, German Chocolate, Belgian Chocolate, dulce de leche caramel, crème brulee, flan, vanilla, Bourbon, Brandy, oak, Chocolate Ice cream, Cadbury cream eggs, port wine, notes, sweetened condensed milk, dark candi sugar, bananas, clove spice hints, banana sundae, Danish cream, Irish cream, capirotada raisin bread pudding, mocha and coffee notes.

Flavors:
Dark Chocolate, milk chocolate, Bakers Chocolate, German Chocolate, Belgian Chocolate, dulce de leche caramel, crème brulee, flan, vanilla, Bourbon, Brandy, oak, toasted coconut, chocolate mint ice cream, tobacco, molasses, leather, anise, rocky road ice cream, Cadbury cream eggs, port wine, notes, sweetened condensed milk, dark candi sugar, bananas, clove spice hints, banana sundae, Danish cream, Irish cream, capirotada raisin bread pudding, dark fruit raisins, figs, currants, prunes, plums, blackberries, dark cherries, raspberries, marshmallow chocolate smores, waffle cone, rye bread, toffee, roasted coffee, mocha, espresso, Kahlua coffee liqueur, brown sugar, pecan pie, hazelnut nectar, Chambord raspberry liqueur and red wine notes.
16664942_10103986385603260_4293450976653644141_o
Aftertaste:
Finishing with toasted coconut, oak, chocolate, hazelnut, brandy, bourbon, dark fruit, caramel, vanilla, banana, dark candi sugar hints and coffee. Despite the ABV, the alcohol is not burning but the barrel oak of the spirit is greatly displayed. Dark abyss full body, smooth, cream, velvety, chewy and syrupy mouthfeel along with a sipping drinkability.

Overall:
Simply because I say so, this beer I consider a bucket lister. There maybe greater beers that blend 2 spirits, a good and evil spirit, but none that had some crazy influence to me when I first started reviewing beers. This beer was damn elusive at the time. In some cases, it still is an elusive beer. Regardless, this one still packing those great and rich bourbon and brandy complexities over dessert. Yes, the actual flavors of from the spirits are present while not giving alcohol in the flavor. Beers like these are ones I wish they made in 750ml bottles. Regardless, I highly recommend this double barrel aged brew, cheers!
16665117_10103986385623220_2196338398387238841_o
Anime Corner:
Panty and Stocking Anarchy as well as Scanty and Kneesocks Daemon from Panty & Stocking w/ Garterbelt were all used in this pairing as it makes sense to use Angels versus Demons. Although this was the original ideal I had since I first reviewed this beer and one that I have expanded upon as I brought the beer to the site oh so long ago. That has not changed but I added more awesome pictures that work well with the pairings. So much love for the series and this beer.

My Black Parade (Mi Desfile Negro) by The Lost Abbey brewing is a 12.5% ABV American Strong ale brewed with Cocoa Nibs, Vanilla Beans, Chilies, Cardamom and Cinnamon aged in Bourbon Oak barrels.

Label:
No one knew her actual name, Though to most she was simply Madame Marigold-Princess of The Black Parade. Each November 1st she led a procession through the town square to a makeshift altar at an unmarked grave.

Year after year, the processions grew larger and the celebrations more elaborate. Patiently she waited for him always. Yet, he never arrived.

Then one year, she too was gone. Her legacy endures as The Black Parade marches on despite her absence. Each fall, the entire village celebrates the lives of all the departed including Madame Marigold and her anonymous lover.
==Introduction==

Hoy es dia de los muertos (Today is day of the dead) and we celebrate the departed loved ones from friends to family. A time in Mexican culture many come together
Producing only 60 cases, this beer is essentially Bourbon Barrel Angel Share with delicious Mexican spices and ingredients mimicking dessert drinks like Mexican Hot chocolate. This beer was released by the Lost Abbey to be purchased and obtained at their location. Which meant only one thing, road trip! I had to basically go on a long journey to visit one of my favorite breweries for a second time to get this. That and also, make it through the small time frame to purchase it. If you would like to get your hands on this Dia de los Muertos beauty, you will have to trade for it or try to find it online. Will it actually be worth the time spent driving or your time and money? Well, let’s take a look at this cerveza muerta. Salud!

Aromas:
Port wine notes, cajeta envinada/ wine goat’s milk caramel, Chocolate abuelita, milk chocolate, Oak, Bourbon, vanilla, marshmallows, cinnamon, cardamom, oak, champurrado, Bourbon, vanilla, rich toasted coconut, dark fruit raisins, dark cherries, currants, Danish cream, pecan pie, hazelnut nectar, fruit cake hints, spicy chile hintslike ancho and guajillo, banana, brown sugar hints and champurrado.

Flavors:
Dark Chocolate, Chocolate abuelita, milk chocolate, Oak, Bourbon, vanilla, rich toasted coconut, flan, sweetened condensed milk hints, jericalla Mexican custard, marshmallows, cinnamon, cardamom, champurrado, dark fruit raisins, dark cherries, currants, black berries, slight hints of spicy chiles like ancho and guajillo, dulce de leche caramel, cajeta envinada/ wine goat’s milk caramel, port wine, mezcal, Khalua liquor, Danish cream, pecan pie, hazelnut nectar, fruit cake hints, molasses, anise, candy sugar, banana hints, champurrado, capirotada raisin bread pudding, earthy notes and three milks/ tres leches cake.

Aftertaste:
Mild chile spices linger after, Chocolate Abuelita, oak, bourbon, vanilla, flan, marshmallows, toasted coconut, port wine, earthy notes, dark fruit, danish cream and spicy notes. Slight booziness in the after taste but not detracting from the flavors. Pitch black and crimson full body, creamy, smooth, velvety and buttery mouthfeel with a sipping drinkability.

Overall:
An exceptional perfection no less but before I put it in the utmost bucket list, I think it needs a whole year, 2 or even 4 years to age to perfection. This reminded me so much of the Bourbon Barrel Aged Dark Lord De Muerte. The chilies do linger a bit but are mainly covered by the sweetness of it all. The Lost Abbey’s attempt at it certainly brings about the Belgian as well the deliciousness that is found in some Mexican traditional hot drinks like Chocolate Abuelita. Would it be worth seeking out? Ahuevo! (Fuck Yeah!) especially if you like Bourbon Barrel aged beers with a slight Belgian inspiration.

Anime Corner:
Ryuko Matoi from Kill La Kill and original bride character were used in this pairing to pair with la novia muerta de la boda del desfile negro (The dead bride of the wedding for the black parade). The colors she has as well as her wedding dress pairs well with the label and the colors. The aspect of death and the story of where the bride waits for her beloved to return is represented as the original character holds up the head of her beloved. Pretty tragic love story like that of El Muelle de San Blas by Mana. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teprNzF6J1I) For Ryuko though, I would say her loss of Senketsu would be something similar in the story of this beer. However, she is truly not alone as she always has Senketsu with her, she has her family and friends ( and #1 fan here 😀 ) so yeah she is awesome. That is what Dia de los Muertos is all about, togetherness.

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION(ratebeer.com)
Sede Vacante is a blend of Barleywine aged in Cognac barrels and Brandy barrel-aged Angel’s Share and at packaging came in at 15% abv. A contemplative beer with substantial depth, Sede Vacante imparts tones of dark fruit and vanilla, with a warming finish from the Cognac. The strongest beer to emerge from The Lost Abbey, portions of the beer spent almost 5 years in a barrel. Sede Vacante can be enjoyed immediately or cellared till the next Papal Conclave, however long that may be.
___

Sede Vacante or “The Vacant Holy See” is used in canon law of the catholic church when the Holy See where the Pope sits is vacant. As of February 28, 2013, pope Benedict XVI had retired from being the pope. There was a period of 13 days that passed until the new pope was chose which was pope Francis. In commemoration of the election, The Lost Abbey had released this beer. This is possibly the strongest Alcohol by Volume ale released by The Lost Abbey to date. I never got around to get this beer until recently. 8 months later, now we will see what this is all about.

Aromas are of dulce de leche caramel, dark fruits, raisins, plums, dates, figs, dark cherries, blue berries, chocolate, bourbon, port wine, communion wine, vanilla, cognac, oak, brandy,

The flavors are of grapes, wine, rich dulce de leche caramel, vanilla, oak, brandy, cognac, chocolate, dark cherries, port wine, rich pecan pie, hazel nuts, walnuts, brown sugar, flan, dark fruits, rich raisins, plums dates, figs, coconut, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, rocky road ice cream notes, anise, licorice, sweetened condensed milk, chocolate fudge, maple syrup, and chocolate wine syrup

The aftertaste is full of dark fruit, caramel, cognac, brandy and like a chocolate wine. This is sipper of a beer but something about it makes it, quite smooth. Very interesting. Take your time with this one. Alcohol present, yet not detracting from all the rich flavors at all. Very mellow indeed. By the way, no carbonation!!

*Overall this was a heavenly, rich, delicious, and awesome beer. A beer that ascends into something that is powerful. This beer can be aged for several years. Possibly even a decade or way longer. The Lost Abbey has been one of my favorite breweries out there making some awesome Belgian beers. This one is a definite representative of the church and all that is holy. For such a sweet, boozy but very smooth beer, I cannot help myself but feel that this one definitely exceeds my expectations for the Barleywine category. It is so damn close to a quadruple aged in bourbon barrels it ain’t even funny. Let’s just say it feels like mixing St. Bernardus abt 12 with Communion Wine and holy water. Thou art Blessed. Loving this one for sure and a highly recommend to those who seek this Vacant Holy See, Amen.

Deliverance (2009 ed.) by The Lost Abbey

Rating: 5.25/5 *2009/Original Release version2009 Version:
Deliverance (2009 ed.) by The Lost Abbey is a 12.5% Angel Share and Serpent Stout hybrid. This bottle was from the original release back in 2009. So it has aged for 3 years.

It won’t save you from Satan’s grasp. But sin tastes good. So, bottom’s up. Or is it down.
——-In comparison to my other reviews, I have to add that this beer sure has become a lot better with time. Less alcohol strength up front but because it has aged, the ABV must be anywhere from 14-15%. That’s pretty damn evil. Reels you in sweetness and then bite back with a buzz. The level of the chocolate is much stronger than the bitter coffee. There is more bourbon, dulce de leche, leche nestle(Mexican sweetened condensed milk) soaked in bread. Dark fruits, pecans, banana, coconut, mocha and cherries. Like aging a fine wine, this beer can only get much much better with age. I don’t know it’s exact peak but I am sure it is around this time. Try the original Deliverance, feel like you will be damned or saved….the choice is yours >:P

2012 Review:
A revisit for a beer that is worthy!! Good vs. Evil is everywhere at every-time. Our actions can take us down the fork into the righteousness or into the oblivion. For whatever decisions are taken in life, in the the end can only be seen as point of views by the masses. But what is the important truth of what is right? Well that is for you to decide. After all, to the rest of the universe, view points are meaningless. This is the hard and very sought after brew, Deliverance by The Lost Abbey brewing. You won’t find this very easily but it is out there. I was lucky enough to find another bottle of this magic. As my last one was actually used as a present from my friend Chino :). Which was an awesome offering by the way. But I figure this beer deserves a bit more of explorations than what I could conjure at that time. This beer is a 12.5% ABV beer with it’s story depicting battles between good and evil, heaven and hell. It mentions the struggle of the end of the world and what is to come for everyone. Whether your good or bad, it don’t matter. You will get yours and I will get mine. So hope you can find this bottle of Deliverance :P. The tastes is just as I remember it before. With the mix of Angel Share and Serpent’s Stout it brings forth Salvation and Damnation all at once with flavors of Bourbon raisin, Brandy chocolate, Vanilla and caramel aged in oak barrels, velvet and creamy sweetness followed by “sit your ass down son” alcoholic strength. Comes in small bottle so you really have to take it in and take your time like the air you breath. I have to admit, otherwise I would be damned, if I did not say that this one is on my top favorite 10 beers. But hardly would I even get the chance at Deliverance…Life is short, unfair but it is up to you to make of it what you want…enjoy if you can find it friends B-)

2011 Review:

Aged after a while, finally shared this with my friend Chino at his bachelor party. Good and Evil come together in this magnificent ales aged in both bourbon and brandy. The Deliverance according to The Lost Abbey website is an ale made with both Angel Share and Serpent Stout. This one is an ale that is treated as a fine wine. Flavors include chocolate, vanilla, raisins, caramel and other delicious flavors. Bourbon and Brandy mix well with the roasted malts of the serpent stouts. Starts with a strong flavorful taste and leaves with the sweetness of the serpent stout. Truly the struggle of good and evil never tasted so damn good. It’s good to be bad and good to be good some times >:P
