2016 Infinite Wishes by Smog City is a 12.7% ABV Imperial Stout aged in Bourbon Barrels

Label:
Infinite Wishes is an inspired reimagination of a classic Imperial Stout. Decadently aged for 12 months in bourbon barrels, Infinite Wishes draws from the depths of nothingness and pours obsidian black with intense aromas of vanilla, cinnamon and cooked sugar finishing with the layered richness of a bourbon chocolate pie.

==Introduction==

Obtained this one on release date at Smog City in Torrance California. I unfortunately had missed last years released but was granted the ability to purchase last years as well. This time, I would not miss it not matter what. This brew reminded me so much of the Neverending Story. That cult classic from the 80’s which is basically their The Nothing (The Antagonistic Entity of the movie) aged in bourbon barrels. May not say much but The Nothing was pretty ridiculous and delicious. Hence, I could not wait to get this one regardless, take up Falcor the Magic Dragon and take Flight!!! Let’s take a look and see what is the true infinite wishes all about.

No alcohol in the taste despite the ABV. Dark pitch black like the nothing body. Velvety, silky, syrupy, smooth and rich creamy mouthfeel, and a sipping drinkability.

Overall:
This little bottle is pure damn magic! If magic potions do exists, then this is one of them. Granting an immense amount of richness to seemingly all senses, the wishes aspect is all true. One of the the many things you could wish for is in this bottle. Ridiculously complex, just like the super well made great beers of our times and one of the most coveted. Supremely recommended and a must have!

Anime Corner:
Rydia of Mist from Final Fantasy IV was used in this pairing as I wanted to pair with the childlike empress who grants Bastian the infinite wishes for destroying the nothing by giving her a name, that name was *Spoiler Alert* MoonChild! *SpoilerEnds* Essentially, Rydia in the pictures I found was a child in the beginning and later you find out that she had summoning powers. A real powerful sorceress princess. She did travel to the moon to save the world another reason why I think it paired greatly. In the last picture she is holding a flame and you see the white dragon in the background paying a tribute to the Luck Dragon and the infinite wishes crystal that the childlike empress gives Bastian as well as the Auryn.

Sabre-Toothed Squirrel by Smog City brewing is a 7.0% ABV American Amber Ale.

Label:
Known locally as Hopopio Maltocutus, our Sabre-Toothed Squirrel befriends you with a complex caramel and toasted malt character, then quickly flaunts its fangs with a solid hop profile lending notes of sweet citrus, pine resin, and a touch of peach.

This cunning cuddly companion is more Amber than IPA with lingering toffee like sweetness, but you won’t soon forget his substantial hop presence and firm bitterness in the finish.

Sabre-Toothed Squirrel is a balanced and approachable hoppy Amber that pairs well with full flavored foods and remains drinkable despite his HOPPY BITE!!

Recently released by Smog City, this cute squirrel label had me going. I said to myself, well, I do love their beers, this is a new release, and I can’t help it it but that is a damn cute and dangerous little squirrel. So there you go, I got it. Pick this one up locally at Smog City directly in Torrance California or keep an eye out as some stores will start to carry this really soon. So let’s take a look and see how this beer is.

Aromas:
Caramel, toffee, pecan pie, citrus, piney, floral and grassy hops, toast rye bread with honey, tangerine, peanuts, hazelnut, brown sugar, pineapple hints, walnuts, dragon fruit, maple syrup hints, cherries, mango, vanilla, herbal notes, grapefruit and coconut hints.

Flavors:
Caramel, rich biscuit, rich toffee, citrus, piney and grassy hops, rye bread, coffee hints, chocolate hints, hazelnut, pecan pie, tangerine, peanuts, honey, peach notes, toasted bread, brown sugar, coconut hints, dragon fruit, vanilla, herbal notes, mango, maple syrup and cherries.

Aftertaste:
Lingering toffee, caramel, piney, citrus, grapefruit, hints of tropical fruit linger, grassy and herbal hops. No alcohol in the taste, clear to medium body, easy to moderate drinkability, light to moderate mouthfeel.

Overall:
A very good amber for sure. The balance of hoppy and sweet is there and is very enjoyable almost tot he point of easy to drink. This works out well for those that love refreshing beers but also like some malt profile and caramel to their beers. Mainly me as I love sweet beers. So yeah, definitely pick up this little guy here, you won’t regret, yes he bites but not till later so enjoy.

Anime Corner:
Makoto Nanaya from BlazBlue was used in this pairing as she is the cutest squirrel girl in anime and video games I could find. She is a powerful fighter so I believe just like the hops are the bite of the sabertooth squirrel, she will kick your ass in such fashion. She is cute as hell like the little squirrel and is probably as sweet as well once you get acquainted.

HopTango by Smog City is a 7.3% ABV India Pale Ale brewed with Mango.

Description:
HopTonic in Mango

___

Got this beer on tap at the local brewery, Smog City in Torrance California near work. They only have this for a limited amount of time. I almost didn’t get a growler of this until I tried it and while going home I regretted not grabbing a growler. The next day, I went back to get one and left so I can definitely take my time with this one but also sharing this with my friends. Fruit IPAs seem to be something that is typically not released often. Especially for those that taste really awesome. There was something special about this one because it seems to have stuck around with me for a long time. So if you are definitely in town, you should take a visit to Torrance and pass by Smog City this labor day weekend!!

Aromas:
From the moment you take the first whiff is nothing but sweet sweet mango!! It then follows grapefruit, flora, grassy, herbal and piney hops, orange candy, mango candies, pineapple, tropical fruits like honey dew melon, biscuit bread, vanilla, caramel hints, lemon peel, stone fruit peach and apricot hints, honey and dragon fruit.

Flavors:

Rich Mango forward but still balanced with the tropics and hops. Grapefrui, floral, grassy, piney and herbal hops, biscuit bread, lots of passion fruit, dragon fruit, mango candy, dragon fruit, papaya, prickly pears, vanilla, caramel, honey dew melon, stone fruit peach hints. Cherries, raspberries, mango tang, mango tampico juice, garlicky and oniony dankness and slight spiciness.

Aftertaste:

Ending with a linger of mango still, mild tropical fruit, herbal and piney hops and fading with bitter citrus. No alcohol in the taste, easy to drink, light to medium mouth feel, clear body as well as crisp and refreshing.

Overall:

Something about the way this beer is made with the mango makes this one just above perfect. There is a great balance of sweet and bitter and nothing overwhelmingly bitter which will definitely make an IPA lover of some people that don’t like bitter IPAs. This is extremely delicious and it is a damn shame they only have it for a limited time. This is one I think they should definitely continue to make. HopTonic on its own was a very good IPA and I might give a run down one of these days. I highly recommend this one if you are by the tap room this weekend or if they decide to bottle this some day.

Anime Corner:

Milla Maxwell from Tales of Xillia was used in this beer pairing because she is the embodiment of this beer. The colors of different fruits and flavors are what HopTango is all about. Smooth, easy to drink sweet, but still dangerous, is what it is all about. Her long flowing hair with the streaks of green represent the mango skins which run from reds, greens, yellows and oranges. You also get a glimpse of cherries here as well. Overall a great pairing.

Bourbon Coffee Porter by Smog City brewing is a 7.5% ABV Imperial Coffee Porter Aged in Heaven Hill, Jack Daniels and Four Roses Barrels.

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Coffee Porter aged in bourbon barrels.
___

Got this beer on tap at the local brewery, Smog City in Torrance California near work. They only have this for a limited amount of time. The original beer was something very special. A coffee porter that straight out tasted like really fancy coffee was one of the first beers I tried from Smog City. It isn’t often I bring a growler home, but when I heard they were releasing this one to the public and growler even, I definitely had to sign up for sure. So if they ever release a bottle or you are ever in the Torrance area, stop by and try some of this before it is gone!! So for now, I will bring this forth and let you know how it is. Definitely support local breweries wherever you are from and cheers!!

Aromas:

Really fancy coffee, mocha, Kahlua, java, bourbon, oak, floral notes, marshmallows, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, vanilla, caramel, fudge brownies, Irish cream, fudge cake, dark fruits like raisins, plums, dark cherries, currants, hazelnut, pecan pie, maple syrup, earthy notes, milk sugar, cinnamon, rye bread, brown sugar, hints of plantain, clove spice and banana.

Flavors:

Rich fancy mocha coffee, java, frappuccino, bourbon, oak notes, Floral notes, marshmallows, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, fudge brownies, marshmallow, vanilla, caramel, Irish cream, fudge cake, dark cherries, dark fruit raisins, plums, currants, hazelnut, banana hints, clove spice, plantain, pecan pie, earthy notes, maple syrup, molasses, whiskey hints, coconut hints, rye bread, toffee, flan hints, anise, mint and milk sugar.

Aftertaste:

Coffee, mocha, caramel, vanilla, banana hints, dark chocolate and earthy notes. No alcohol in the taste, smooth drinkability, full body appearance, velvety mouth feel.

Overall:

Loved this one a lot. Even more complex than the original fancy coffee porter. No joke, not only does their porter taste like a cup of Joe, this takes it to the next level of complexity. While it may not be the best coffee beer ever, this is definitely exceeding my expectations even if by a quarter. They did an exceptional job and just the fact that they had it in growler was definitely worth not missing this one. Oh YES!! this one was not worth missing. So like I said before, if you are in town, go get this one for sure, I highly recommend it!

Anime Corner:

Rin Tohsaka from Fate Stay Night/Zero was chosen for this review because I wanted to pair some of the coffee and bourbon flavors with the colors of the artwork. I have another version of Rin but I will most likely use that one for the original beer, which is very awesome. This beer is exceptional for what it is and the flavors like in the artwork like the red and brown for cherry and coffee and the brown for bourbon definitely are revealed in this one. Especially in the deep crimson eyes which show some complexity.

Death By Hops by Smog City brewing

10462012_10101879186931290_6469231238760077614_n 10305411_10101879187924300_682767545809776915_nRating: 4.8/5

Death By Hops by Smog City brewing is a 9.3% ABV Double India Pale Ale.

Released recently at the brewery exclusively, I wanted to pick up this beer to give it a review but mainly to get a growler as well. This is Smog City’s first Double IPA. I have reviewed El Segundo’s Tripple IPA from a growler before so I figured I give Smog’s DIPA a shot too as a lot of Smog City’s beers are awesome.

Aromas:
Dank grassy, floral, piney and grapefruit hops, citrus, dank garlicky, oniony, oily hop scents, biscuit bread, some tropical notes like, tangerine preserves, caramel, toffee, passion fruit, kiwi, prickly pear and berry notes.

Flavors:
Grassy, Grapefruit, floral, pine and herbal hop dankness, citrus, tangerine preserves, tropical notes like mango, kiwi, prickly pear, passion fruit, biscuit bread, garlic and onion dankness, caramel, toffee, berries and honey.

Aftertaste:
Lingering citrus with lots of piney hop goodness and dank hop resin. No alcohol in the taste. A sipping beer but very crisp and refreshing.

Overall:
A very good beer if you like your Double IPAs grassy and herbal with not overpowering tropics. Personally I enjoy more tropical IPAs but this one has enough to keep me interested so the flavors work really well here. It is also very damn fresh so the freshness really helps. The hops really resonate in all aspects of the beer. Worth stopping by again for another growler fill of this!

Anime Corner:
Shampoo from Ranma½ was used in this pairing since I got the crazy idea of linking Death by Hops to Death by Snu-Snu from the Futurama episode “Amazon Woman in the Mood”. In that episode, the main characters travel to a planet where it is ruled by Amazonian women and when they have men around, they kill them by snu-snu which is essentially having their pelvic regions crushed while having sex with these womanly giants. Shampoo, according to the Ranma show is actually an Amazonian woman herself. In the picture we see her almost looking like a giant looking down at the beer and the drinker. Meaning she will kill you!! Also, along with the second picture, when I meant to say she is a killer, well yes!! So if death by snu snu is related to Shampoo, then Shampoo killing is Death by Shampoo or Death by Hops!
