Heavens To Murgatroid (a.k.a Snagglepuss beer) by Five Stones brewing of Cibolo Texcas is a 6.2% ABV Witbier brewed with Native Texas Prickly Pear Tuna.

==Introduction==

My brother in pairing Arts, Aaron Mediola of beermetaldude.com graces our humble little site with another epic glory of a beer from the awesome guys at 5 Stones brewing. This time a beer made with Prickly Pear Tunas. These are a delight especially from Mexico and to have a beer made with them is something I don’t think I have ever tried. So it is definitely a priviledge. Yes, there have been good beers like IPAs that have some hints of prickly pear Tunas but to actually see them do some awesome magic to a beer, it keeps reminding me of that meme where the dude is like “What Kind of Sorcery is this?!?” Haha, anyways, cheers to you the awesome readers, my buddy Aaron Mendiola of beermetaldude.com and the good folks at 5 Stones brewing!

Aromas:
Strawberries, granola bar, Prickly pears (Tunas), biscuit bread, coriander spice, strawberry cream, stone fruit, apricots, peaches, apples, pears, mango, mild earthy notes, rye bread, trail mix notes, toffee, vanilla, pecan pie, clove spice, banana hints, honey, oranges, vanilla and caramel.

Flavors:
Raspberries, Prickly pears (Tunas), rich strawberries, rye bread, vanilla, caramel, tangerines, oranges, orange gummies, cranberries, honey, cherries, chamomile, hibiscus, grapes, dark fruit raisins, plums, stone fruit apricots, peaches, apples, pears, mango, mild earthy notes, rich trail mix, granola berry bars, pecan pie, toffee, biscuit bread, coriander, flan notes, strawberry cheese cake, banana notes, clove spice, and some funky hay hints.

Aftertaste:
Rich berries, rich toffee, caramel, vanilla, prickly pears, stone fruits, trail mix, granola, honey and citrus in the aftertaste. So good, so rich! No alcohol in the taste, Pinkish Gold full body, crisp, syrupy, velvety and refreshing mouthfeel with a easy to moderate drinkability.

Overall:
Suffering Succotash! I believe we have a perfect witbier. It is pretty crazy how the prickly pear tuna combination and the wit base of the beer and honey flavors really unleash all these variety of berry and all sort of complex flavors. It’s not a joke but enjoyable like the old school cartoons of yesteryear. A grand thanks to Aaron for hooking me up with another awesome brew from the good people at 5 Stones. A highly recommended one!

Anime Corner:
SnagglePuss (Not Anime but Cool) from Hana Barbera and Nia Teppelin from Tengen Toppa Gurren Laggan were used in this pairing for many reasons. SnagglePuss as a tribute to a beer named after his quote “Heavens to Murgatroyd”, the lion in the label and Nia’s hair representing the lion’s mane as well as the color and flavors of prickly pear Tunas which are represented in the reds she wears with the greens, yellows and teals.

There’s an art to corralling a bunch of ducklings A nip to turn Suzy this way or a nudge to launch little Johnny towards the water and suddenly they are all lined up ready to follow along. Or are they? This isn’t something they teach you at Mother Gooze School. You see, there always seems to be that one duckling (or two) who has an agenda all their own. At that point, all bets are of. Then mama goose loses control and her inner Devil comes out. 

Blending Oak Barrels can be a lot like corralling little ducklings. Each barrel has its own personality. Some, like good little ducklings, get in line from the very beginning. Others are quite more problematic and need more nurturing. Duck Duck Gooze is made from all sorts of barrels. Some were great from the beginning while others needed more attention. Duck Duck Gooze was three years in the making. We hope you find it worth the wait

Only released exclusively at the Lost Abbey every 3 years since 2009, this beer ha made a return this year. Last year They could not do it as they had to make way for the Ultimate Box set which was released in 2012. This beer will be slated to release in 2016 again. The beer is made with 3 sets of barrels each aging 1, 2 and 3 years apart and then blended together. I was only lucky enough to get a single bottle eligible for review here at the site. Being probably the best sour ale ever released, I will do my best to review in as much detail as my ability will allow. 

Aromas are very citrusy, lemon, lime, biscuit bread, funky bitter grapes, oak, peach, pears, hints of dragon fruit, earthy must, barnyard hay, floral notes, chamomile and roses

The flavors are musty, and citrusy but some very nice sweetness and oakiness lurks. Lemon, oranges, roses, hay, biscuit bread, chamomile, sour apple, apricot, sour lemon candy, teguacan (Mexican Lime and seltzer water with spices), pineapple, musty grapes and spices.

The aftertaste leaves like lemon on a sour fruit with oak. Basically, it leaves sour but then fades into like a fruity and hay finish. Clear body, but you definitely have to take your time with it

Overall this is puckeringly Awesome. It starts off sour but as you go on and it warms up, it gets good giving some really nice fruity, citrusy and oaky taste. You really have to enjoy sours to like this one, otherwise this beer may not be for you. I think this is one of the reasons it was made this way. Having an open taste to sour helps finding good flavors in them. Jolly Pumpkin helped out for many years to find it. The good thing is that this one is more tart than pure sour. Clearly some sours may be pure vinegar taste but some beers when done very well, are exceptionally awesome, like this one.

Despite the fact that the ratings on the websites are moderate to good about this beer, I still wanted to seek out for 2 reasons. Great label art but also, I am a fan of Belgian Dark Ales. Also, this beer is mainly sold in the east coast so it was no easy task to find. I had to resort to online sources. 

Aromas are of dark fruits like raisins, plums, caramel, chocolate notes, cherry, earthy spices, bread, candi sugar, figs, dates, cinnamon, brown sugar, cloves and banana notes.

The flavors are of figs, and dates, plum notes, raisins, candi sugar, walnuts, maple, cinnamon, clove spice, rye bread, pears, apricots, molasses, chocolate notes, bananas, caramel, cinnamon, brown sugar, cloves, lemon meringue and slight cherry notes. 

The after taste stays figgy, nutty, notes of residual raisin and caramel notes. Alcohol seems to be a little present in the fragrance but not as much in the taste.

Overall the beer is very good. A very nice strong dark ale close to a quad even, which I think should be considered a quad. I does a very good job in a lot of aspects, but you can definitely find way better Belgian strong darks out there that are more common. Not that this should be passed up though. If you can find it, get it as it is pretty limited and worthy of taste merit.

Café Racer 15 by Bear Republic

Café Racer 15 by Bear Republic is a 9.75% ABV Double/Imperial India Pale Ale

Café Racer 15™ features aromas of bright citrus and resinous pine from the generous use of Citra, Amarillo, Cascade and Chinook hops which are complimented by a dry malt finish. The result is a high revving Double IPA that is loud and assertive, much like the rebellious street racers who inspired it. Never ride alone…

Just in time for IPA day, this version of their double IPA is supposed to be more west coast (more hoppier due to the greater variety of hops as stated above) than the Racer X which was more English tradition plus hops. This beer won the Great American Beer Festival Silver award in 2012.

Aromas are very hoppy and tropical. Grapefruit, mango, kiwi hints, citrus, prickly pear, pineapple, floral, dank, piney and grassy hops, lemon peel, biscuit bread, honey notes and caramel

The flavors are awesome as well. Lots of flowy, oily, dank, piney and floral hops, grapefruit, pineapple hints, mango, honey dew melon, kiwis, passion fruit, papaya, peach and apricot notes, dragon fruit, blood oranges, lemons, caramel and biscuit bread with tangy mandarin jelly

After taste lingers in the tropics. Almost like I just got drinking some type of hoppy bitter fruit punch. Kinda hard to find the alcohol in this one as well. It is also very refreshing, surprisingly smooth and well balanced both in the hop, malt and tropical aspects. 

Just like Racer X, definitely as close to Heady Topper, maybe closer. I honestly think the difference from the 2 IPAs is that Cafe 15 is way more tropical. Simply amazing and gets more tastier with every sip. Seems to be way better than Racer 5. I am sure this beer will soon be coveted, so if you find this savor it!! It really is an amazing IPA.
