Sour in the Rye with Kumquat is best enjoyed fresh for a full citrus character.

I had this one fresh long ago at the Bruery and have not had it since. It was definitely sour, tart and citrusy back then. One year later, and let us see where this one has taken the flavors too. Cheers!

Aromas:
Lots if oranges, citrus, rye bread, oak, caramel, wine grapes, toffee, stone and tropical fruit like peaches, apricot, mango, papaya, caramel, brown sugar, funky notes and lemons.

Flavors:
Lots of oak, caramel, citrus oranges, kumquats, lychee, sour wine grapes, rye bread, tangerine preserves, sour dough bread, lemon peels, prickly pear, sour apple, dark cherries and leather.

Aftertaste:
Finish with big tart orange and rye bread notes, sourdough bread, caramel hints, oak and kumquats. No alcohol in the taste, a sipping beer despite the ABV, medium body with a full mouthfeel.

Overall:
Well, for starters, the sour notes have definitely fallen a bit but the tart levels definitely remain. It is a very good beer but only really if you enjoy sours. The sweetness comes through as the beer warms up so drinking it at the 45° F temperature should be ideal. I would only recommend it if you like sours otherwise this may not be a beer for you.

Anime Corner:
Panty Anarchy from Panty and Stocking was used in this pairing mainly due to the label but mainly for the flavors. You see, Panty is pretty rude and aggressive who only interest is in herself and to seduce men into bed with her. The sour aspects of the beer plus the Kumquats definitely fit the description on this one. Not to say that she doesn’t care completely as she has a sweet side sometimes and knows how to get the job done when her friends are in trouble.
