120 Minute IPA by Dogfish Head

Rating: 5/5

120 Minute IPA by Dog Fish is an 18% ABV Imperial IPA. Classified as one of the strongest alcohol wise IPAs in the world. 24 karat Gold hops :P. With a hop process that takes quite a while to get this high of an alcohol volume. A result, as stated in the label below, of an IPA that can age well. This is the second time I try this beer so I figured I review it again :P.

Label:

“What you have here is the holy grail for hopheads. This beer is continually hopped over a 120-minute boil and then dry-hopped every day for a month. Enjoy now or age for a decade or so.”

The beer smells like toffee, maple and caramel. The beer taste is unlike other IPAs in terms of the pine/grass/herbal and grapefruit bitterness. The presence of those flavors are in here but they are covered up by the sweetness and strength of the the alcohol. Some beer flavors are of some sun dried apples, peaches, apricots, oranges, mangoes, bread with orange jelly, and some butterscotch. Also, to add some craziness to the mix, the beer has a 120 IBU index. An index higher than the 90-100s IBU that the human tongue can detect. As it burns insane with hop oils, it also sooth with that caramel sweetness. It is almost an equivalent to a oak barrel aged beer. A creamy and maple syrup like mouth feel that is very rich. With time it is supposed to tasted like a strong sherry wine.

2011 Review:
Pure IPApicness :P….Super strong 120 minute IPA by Dogfish is a brew quite different from any IPA I have had really. Most IPAs tend to be hoppy and bitter. For some reason when it comes to high alcohol beers, such as this 18%ABV IPA, they seem very sweet. DO NOT DISCERN…as sweet to the taste bud is actually more alcohol when it comes to high alcohol beers as I have tried so far. The devil is in the sugar basically…Anyways. This beer not only being very sweet, very strong in alcohol, it is surprisingly so bitter in IBUS…120 to be exact….Funny thing is, humans can only sense about 100 or so (Thank you ruination ale :P), that the bitterness means nothing here. You are more overwhelmed with grassy hops, sugar caramel, honey, piney,Mango, apricot, peach, grapefruit, orange, strong delicious alcohol (classy), and just a sweet mellow drink ability. It is amazing how well the bitterness is masked…LOL its so strong you dont even feel it…you will feel the alcohol later but your too busy drinking it that you sense nothing!!…other than nectar of gods :O….I love this IPA, one of the best and one that was not easy to get at all…. Salute to you Dogfish head you out did yourselves 😛
