Essence by Hangar 24 is a 8.5%ABV Local Fields Series Double IPA. Hangar 24 is known for their very orangy and citrusy beers. What the managed to create here with this DIPA, which is brewed with Navel Oranges, Blood Oranges & Grapefruit, is a DIPA/Heffeweizen type hybrid beer.
This not only emphasizes tropical and piney flavors, it bursts it more than the hops. People that do not normally like IPAs but like Heffeweizens will love this beer. The beer’s bitterness is actually a mix of the the grassy/piney hops with that of the grapefruit and tangy oranges. A beer that balances so that it is not too sweet and not too bitter but just right. The beer, aside from orange zest, grapefruit and piney flavors has other flavors like honey, hibiscus (Jamaica) and coriander. I have never tried a blood orange beer and have always wondered how much different from oranges they are. What ever they are, this will make me wonder what role they give to the beer in terms of its sweet and bitter complexity. I am sure that is what gives this beer its crimson color for sure. Found this one at Ramirez Liquor, new beer from Hangar 24, they make some really awesome beers :P. This may surely be “THE SUMMER BEER”
