Black Robusto by Drake’s Brewing is a 6.3% ABV American Porter.

Label:
Drake’s Black Robusto Porter is a deep, dark “Robust Porter,” a beer style known for being darker, fuller-bodied, and higher in alcohol by volume than a standard Brown Porter. Our Black Robusto goes down smoothly with flavors of bittersweet chocolate an slight roast from Crystal and Chocolate malt. A touch of spicy, herbal hop character from Willamette hops balance out the finish. Enjoy a pint with dark, lingering satisfaction.

A new beer from Drake’s Brewing in San Leandro California. Picked this one up at Ramirez Liquor Warehouse in Los Angeles. Some of the beers I have tried from Drake’s are very good. This is the third one I have tried from the. The Robust aspect of this beer intrigued me as I wanted to see how robust at 6.3% ABV this would be. We’ll, let us find out.

Aromas:
Deep coffee roast, espresso, dark chocolate, caramel, Irish cream, mocha, fudge, milk chocolate, earthy hops, mild campfire smoke, coffee cake, hints of cinnamon, brown sugar and marshmallows.

Flavors:
Rich Coffee, earthy hop notes, dark chocolate, caramel, Irish cream, lactose sugar notes, milk chocolate, mild campfire smoke, coffee cake, espresso, mocha, brown sugar, molasses, frappuccino, marshmallows, graham crackers, coconuts notes, hazelnuts, vanilla and mild BBQ notes.

Aftertaste:
Earthy hops, coffee grains, Irish cream hints, caramel and mild dark chocolate. No alcohol in the taste, moderate drinkability with some smoothness and medium mouthfeel.

Overall:
Very good and very impressed despite the low ABV. This is pretty on point in terms of a robust and smokey, sweet coffee roast. You would expect some extended flavors from a beer with higher ABV like the other complex sweets I mentioned, but this one hits some really good notes. You would be surprised how well this drinks and hence the reason I recommend it as you can most likely find this one wherever they sell Drake beers.

Anime Corner:
Aya Shameimaru from Touhou was used in this pairing to show case not only the colors of the label but the robust flavor of the beer. Aya is the type of character who tries to do her job very well and is also way to strong for her own good. I guess you can say, she is very Robust and it is this Roboust aspect that pairs with the deliciousness of this beer also the fact that she unexpectedly tends to win all her fights accidentally. Not to say that the beer is an accident but how often do you see a beer with low ABV be so full of flavors? And that is why she was chosen as the pairing!

Drakonic Imperial Stout by Drake’s Brewing is a 8.75% ABV, 40 IBUs, Imperial Stout

Label:
You are holding a Drake’s Drakonic Imperial Stout, A big, malty beast of a beer that exemplifies the way we roll here at Drake’s. Two-row malt is blended with Chocolate malt, roasted barley, and dark Crystal malts to make up the grist. Only one hop addition, Columbus, is added for bittering, allowing the abundance of malt in this beer to shine through. Enjoy the dense brownish head, the silky maltiness, and flavors of licorice, coffee and chocolate, rounded out with a slightly dry finish. here’s to those who don’t fear the mighty!

Aromas of this beer are of milk chocolate, bakers chocolate, coffee, rich caramel, roasty malts, minor earthy hops, vanilla, a minor rum character and whipped cream. The flavors are of milk chocolate, bakers chocolate, dark chocolate, mocha, caramel, vanilla cream, earthy hops, hazelnut and licorice. Another very good example of a stout. Not too smokey or bitter with nice coffee and chocolate with caramel aftertaste that stays with you for a bit. I definitely like the more sweeter caramel and chocolate aspect of this beer. Reminds me of some of the best beers that I have had so far. Not to the level of awesome complexity but still bring some very good stuff home.

Denogginizer by Drake’s Brewing

Rating: 4.25/5

Denogginizer by Drake’s Brewing is a 9.75%ABV Imperial India Pale Ale.

Label:

Silver Medal winner for Imperial India Pale Ale, Great American Beer Festival 2009. An Imperial (or Double) IPA, Denogginizer is a big bold beer hopped with an abundant amount of Simcoe and Columbus with a touch of Amarillo and Cascade. Mashed with Munich and Crystal malt for color and flavor…and to help balance out the hop assault.

Another DIPA to add to the list of Double IPAs. As I have explained in other reviews, some IPAs focus on certain traits wether sweeter or more bitter. This IPA focuses on several things but mostly in the sweeter category. More caramel than tropical sweet. Hoppy but not super bitter. Just enough to let you know you are dealing with an Double IPA. Also the alcohol is well hidden. Flavors of caramel, honey, hoppy grassy pine and grapefruit, some apple, tangerine, peach, spicy but not herbal. A sweeter DIPA than others. So if you prefer more bitter and more tropical, there are others out there. This one is still recommended if you like sweeter DIPAs though. Not bad at all 🙂
