Bourbon County Brand Stout Vintage 2008 by Goose Island

Rating: 5/5

Bourbon County Brand Stout Vintage 2008 by Goose Island brewing is an Imperial Stout that actually has a mystery Alcohol By Volume range. You see, the bottle states that back in 2008 it was 13%ABV. It has been 4 years since this beer has been cellared according to one of my contacts who traded this beer for me. The most recent version of this beer according to beer advocate is 14.5%ABV. This thing must be well beyond that. Possibly maturing to a 15 or 16% ABV. Nevertheless, this beer was meant for again. Trying this beer is quite the prestige really. Something maybe I don’t often get to do. Here is what is listed on the label:

“I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla,carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it.” Brewmaster Greg Hall;

Unbelievably Chocolatey with coconut flavors. Maybe at some point in time this beer was alittle bitter and maybe more coffee flavored. As soon as I opened it I was very very impressed. As a fan of sweet beers, this was amazing. The taste was just very powerful. Not alcohol wise but sweet. Think about it this way. If you have ever enjoyed an AlmondJoy with its almond, chocolate and coconut crème filling, then this is what this taste like in liquid form. There is some nice coffee mocha flavor in there as well. Vanilla, Bourbon, Raisins, toffee and licorice. There is hardly any sense in it’s alcohol strength. A world class stout and up there with the many many fine beers of the world. If you ever find it, doesn’t have to be from 2008, but even from now…buy 2…one for now and the other for several years from now :P…WOW…just ..WOW
