Another EPIC Release by the makers of Fat Tire Amber Ale. This is part of New Belgium brewing Lips of Faith Series. Some of the most awesome ales I have ever tried. Last year I had the Dunkel Weisse which was a German Epic Dark Heffeweizen with a strong 9% alcohol. This January they released the Prickly Passion Saison. This ale is made with …well…I’ll just describe the label π (” Peter Picked a prickly pear and paired it with a passsion fruit. “Perfect! Pitch it in!” He proclaimed. Now we have this pleasing Prickly Passion Saison brewed with fruit juices and french saison yeast to our brewmaster’s picking.”) LOL moving on… This beer upon opening, there is this rich wiff of fresh bread. It reminds me of the Stone Vertical Epic 11.11.11 which is made with Anaheim Chiles and a definite recommendation for sure :). Too bad, just like that one, this here is a seasonal. Now about the taste. For those who have not tried passion fruit, it is a fruit that is tangy and sour. Purple on the outside and the insides have yellow pulp and dark edible seeds. It almost taste like a orange but with a runny soupy texture. Very good. Prickly pears are spiny green on the outside and juicy with minor sweetness and has edible seeds as well. Mexicans know this fruit as Tunas. Well that is the similar after taste I get from this. Sweet, tangy, minor sourness, bready, candy sugar, honey, spices and floral notes. Over all I mainly enjoy it for a number of reasons. Just like the rare fruits of the world like the Dragon fruit or Pitayas as they are called in Mexico, but also just the nice sweet bread flavors that come from the mixed juices fermented in the yeast. Delicious and a pick up for sure. It may not last a long time so make it count if you get this one
