Samuel Smith’s Yorkshire Stingo is a 9%ABV English Strong Ale aged in oak casks

Label:
Some of the oak casks at Samuel Smith’s date back more than a century with the individual oak staves being replaced by the Old Brewery coopers over the years. Gradually the casks soak in more & more of the character of the ale fermented in stone Yorkshire squares. Yorkshire Stingo is aged for at least a year, matured in these well-used oak casks in the brewery’s underground cellars deriving fruit, raisin, treacle toffee, Christmas pudding and slight oaky flavours, before being further naturally conditioned in bottle. Allow time for east to settle before opening then pour gently.

This is probably considered England’s best strong ale in the world. It definitely showed it as I have never seen a barrel aged English beer at something as high as 9%ABV. The aromas are amazing. It is the very same English malt aroma but now with that bourbon, vanilla, caramel, oak, chocolate and coconut fragrance. Wow is what I would describe the scent of this beer. Other aromas of dark fruits like raisins, black and blue berries, biscuit bread, honey, apples and somewhat like barley wine. The flavors are of oak, vanilla, caramel, chocolate, strong marshmallow creme, slight coffee, slight coconut, slight flan, slight bourbon, apples, dark fruits like plums, black berries, blue berries, raisins, cookies and cream, sweet raisin and pecan bread pudding, cinnamon, flan, some what creme brulee, walnut and hazel nut creme. It is an over the top, exceptional beer. I think if it was found often, I would definitely pick it up over and over again. You can’t beat this as it goes in par with some of the best barrel aged beers out there. This beer along with organic chocolate, oatmeal stout and winter welcome are some of my favorites from this brewery along with Goblin King from Wychwood are my favorites from England. Brewdog I won’t include in the Great Britain mix as they are another Scottish story all together 😉

Oh my fucking GOD!!!… another epic chocolate beer….lol just like the art work of the bags of chocolate, just plug it into MY VEINS!!!….Fragrance explodes with very rich milk chocolate aromas. Taste is like nectar of gods. Chocolate, rich but not super ultra mega sweet. There is still some caramel and vanilla notes there as well. There is some roasty bitterness but it is very little. So little that it is only there balance the beer and not try and detract from the amazing chocolate flavor. It is all natural beer which totally tells any form that is not chocolate tasting to take a hike. This is so good and the only reason it has not reached chocolate rain is because even if it is rich in chocolate, it is not ultra mega sugary boozy epicness like chocolate rain. It is just to let you know look, you are looking at beer that when it says it taste like true chocolate, you better believe its gonna be chocolate. Also it is a 5.0%ABV so that is even more amazing. Doesn’t have to be super strong to pull some amazing flavor. You know what else is 5.0%ABV? Budweiser, and this is way way better than that. This has become another chocolate favorite beer of mine and is a must try..

Winter Welcome by Samuel Smith

Rating: 4.6/5

Winter Welcome by Samuel Smith is a 6.0% ABV Winter Warmer ale. Winter Warmer is a style of beer that is geared toward Christmas and the winter. This is an English style ale so it bring more of brown ale characteristic to it. Also, English Ales do not spice up their beers.

The full body resulting from fermentation in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’ and the luxurious malt character, which will appeal to a broad range of drinkers, is balanced against whole-dried Fuggle and Golding hops with nuances and complexities that should be contemplated before an open fire.

Each year the label has a different picture.

(Every year, the picture in the center changes. This year it is the Rugby pic)

If these are not using spices, this is very awesome. I heard somewhere that this is one of the best Christmas beers out there. LOL They maybe right. The interesting thing about this beer, is that it drinks like a brown ale with its grain, almonds, caramel and toffee flavors. However, what if the the caramel flavor became richer and there some banana and maybe some dark fruit notes to it. Reminiscent of a light Belgian quad almost….almost, then this is what we have here. Something about this beer and is bready, dulce de leche with minor raisin and plum flavors is very appealing to me. It is not overwhelming but enough to make it a very good beer. If you like new castle, and maybe a fan of Belgian beers, try this one. It is all around pretty good.
