Akevitt Barrel aged Porter by HaandBryggeriet is a Norwegian Porter that is special in two ways: One is that it is a beer made in tribute to the majority of Norwegian Farmers who brew beer as well as the majority of those farmers who would make Akevitt. Second, because it is extremely difficult to find. In Norway, they would have a tradition where some would have a shot of Akevitt or Aquevit andΒ chase is down with beer. Well the guys in Haandbryggeriet took that tradition and aged porter in Akevitt barrels to produce this amazing beer. In Norwegian tradition, Akevitt is a spirit from tradition that has been brewed with herbs and spices since the 15th century. So for beer, it is known to be a very good compliment. They also made a very limited portion as well. I was lucky enough to find this brew and talk about it. When I opened it I noticed it had no head. Just a very thin line along the sides of the glass. This usually means that a beer like this will most likely to be higher in alcohol than the ABV stated as as 10%. There is very rich flavor coming of this beer. I get sensations of some wild yeast aside from the cherry/ chocolate like flavor is present. There is also the dark fruits of raisin and figs. The brew also has a smokey bitterness to it as well that lingers long after it’s initial taste. This is probably due to the Akevitt herbs and spices that compliment this beer extremely well. Never really tried Akevitt but if it is like the what I experienced in this beer… Then it is very delicious π
