Otto Ale by Victory brewing is a 8.1% ABV Belgian Dubbel Rauch Smoked beer. They mixed German style smoked malts and Belgian yeast. Right off the bat, you get a lot of smoked campfire flavors like something burning. There is this ham and salty flavor that reminds me of a dry Guinness stout but with sweet chocolate flavors. Since this beer is using Belgian yeast, it does have some bready and sweet flavors to it that really balances all the smoked flavors. LOL I guess this beer is like if you took a hotdog bun made with chocolate and caramel, added a bacon wrapped hotdog and you let both the bun and the bread sit on an open flame, you would probably arrive to what this taste like. Which is not bad, I don’t mind smoked beer nor do I not mind camping B-). I think the fact that there are flavors are a major amounts of dark fruits like raisins, plums, cherries and figs as well as caramel makes this beer super interesting. The first sip was quite smokey but as the flavors went on I was like HOLY SHIT!!. This is pretty fucking good. Very dry though meaning that the flavors fade away right away while you get the smokey flavors lingering. Meaning you need to drink some more to keep complementing the the smoke with sweet Belgian flavors. Unless you are a fan of smoked beers or Belgians, you may not like this. But if you are, the concept is extraordinary and worth a try!!
In 1987, when we arrived in Bamberg, Germany for the first time, St. Otto was not there to greet two thirsty travelers in a rented Fiat. He’d been dead for 848 years but we were alive, and our recent visit to the Belgian brewery of Orval only fanned the flames of our desire for fermented pleasures. the smoked malt(’rauch’)beers of this lovely town where St. Otto was once bishop were our siren song, luring us into deep, exotic flavors that we never before imagined in beer. Three decades later we wondered what smoked malt might add to a Belgian-style dubbel ale. Here it is, an Otto revival of sorts. We hope it helps rejuvenate some of our brain cells that were martyred in Bamberg so long ago.
